IQ4Q FOREWORD As we, the students of the Senior Class of Joseph Case High School, pass through these halls en route to an unknown future, we at last realize what these four years of preparation will mean to us. The members of the Senior Class leave this Yearbook of 1949 as a remembrance of four of the happiest years of our lives. DEDICATION To Richard B. During the first year of their stay, they chose for capable leaders to guide them: Richard Enos, George Lake, Wilfred Heys and Pauline Santerre. With Coach Robert E. Bannister as detective- in-chief, the four helped the class to find a $50 clue in the Valentine’s Dance. Because the searchers endeavored to accumulate die knowledge needed to progress to the end of their journey, the dance and the collection of dues from class members were the only means of ' increasing the funds. The second year found an added number of detectives from Rehoboth to aid in the search. With Wilfred Heys as Sherlock Holmes, George Lake again as Mr. Watson, Robert Smith as a representative from Skelly Detective Agency, and Pauline Santerre as note keeper, the class was guided to an even more economically successful year by sponsoring the Christmas Dance. During the summer a frolic was held where more money was made to help to obtain full realization of the New York trip. With the coming of the third year, Norbert Moniz, George Lake, Charles Kenyon, and Beverly Mller assisted the class in the selling of greeting cards, the sponsoring of the Junior Prom in addition to informal dances, the collecting of waste paper, the selling of cakes, pies, and cookies the sponsoring of a whist party, a cowboy show, and the raising of dues. Almost $1,000 was placed in Charles Kenyon’s armored car as rewards for the year. The final test was the last year where all information had to be gathered for a solution of the case. Norbert Moniz, again as Mr. Holmes, a new Watson, Constance Misiorski, a new armored car attendant, June Entwistle, and Secretary Beverly Miller, pooled their efforts with those of their class¬ mates to seize the last money making clues to the mystery. Finally in June 1949 the faithful detectives were awarded the satisfaction of seeing a job well done. The mystery was solved! They were on their way to New York! The detective agency wishes to thank Coach Bannister, the class officers, and all others who have helped us to reach our goal. Beverly Miller Class Secretary ass :J ropkecy Time: June 16, 1969. Place: New York City The curtain rang down on the 102nd performance of our play. There were five curtain calls, three with just Barbara Neubauer and myself. As we went down the narrow stairway that led to our dressing rooms, I noticed that my dressing room door stood ajar. Wondering a moment, I left Barbara, pushed the door open, and went in. A cheery, vaguely familiar, voice greeted me with a hearty, Hello Sam!’’ I looked, then looked again for there in a chair sat Connie Misiorski, one of my old schoolmates, who had become a very successful theatrical critic for The Chicago Sun. Babs!” I yelled at the retreating figure of Miss Neubauer, who returned immediately with a puzzled expression on her face. What’s the matter? .... Connie!’’ Her surprise was as great as mine had been. Connie was smiling warmly. It’s wonderful to see you both. You certainly have made big names for yourselves.” Look 1 Connie,” I said, you go with Babs. while we scrape our make-up off and change. Then we’ll go to the ' Club’ for dinner.” Swell!” Connie agreed. Finishing my washing and dressing, I opened the door just as Connie and Babs appeared at the end of the hall. Outside the stage door was parked my aqua-colored convertible., We piled into it, drove through the glitter and swank of Fifth Avenue, and finally arrived at the Stork Club. The doorman admitted us with a smile, and the head waiter, who was none other than Jimmy Britland decked out in a tuxedo and French accent, led us to a ring side table. After he had taken our order, we started reminiscing about our school days. I’ve just been to good old Swansea,” Connie informed us. I came East to 1 Massachusetts but now I’m on my way back to Chicago.” Did you see any of our old gang?” Babs questioned eagerly. Yes, I saw quite a few of them. June Entwistle and Hope Pontes were home on vacation. They are both teaching at Brown University, you know. Let’s see ... . Oh, yes, Philip Griffin and Rodney Kerr have their own garages and are doing a wonderful business and Robert Eddy is a radio engineer for station WPRO. Robert Smith has one of the largest photography studios in the country with George Lake as his Vice-President.” By the way,” I added, we have another celebrity from our class. Have you read Mildred Reed’s new novel? It’s been on the best seller list for eight months now.” Babs came up with some more news about another one of our friends. ' Did you hear that the first round trip flight to the moon was made by Robert Duckworth?” We all chuckled. We knew he’d do it. I spoke up again, You probably know that Susan Waring, known as ' Aunt Sue’ on the radio, tells stories to the children every day, the program being sponsored by the Picard Ice Cream Concern. Just think, he was once a clerk at Dunrovin’s. The program features Dorothy Gonsalves as the girl vocalist.” At this point Jimmy came with our orders. After he left Connie re¬ membered more about some of the class of ’49. Helen Sykes and Jane Murray are quite successful in the modeling field. Last month I reviewed three of their shows. I heard that Albert Ledoux and Herman Howarth own chicken farms in the middle west.” Suddenly the lights dimmed; into the spotlight stepped the rage of Broadway and the country, Norbert Moniz. As he sent the rich tones of his voice through the club, several girls fainted from sheer ecstasy. Finishing his number he made his way to our table amidst thunderous applause. He seated himself and in no- time at all we discovered that three years ago the ex-pres dent of our class had married a cute blonde girl and was not the father of a baby boy. Norbert announced that he had received a letter from Jimmy Leavitt. Did you know that he is a prominent lawyer? Carolyn Eddy is his secretary and he defended in the Gray case.” What was that? I’m afraid I’m a little behind in my newspaper read¬ ing,” I said with what was meant to be a blush. Norbert continued, Some company tried to sue Frank Gray for crowd¬ ing the market with too many of his Chevrolet cars. He’s president of the company now.” Did they win?” Connie asked eagerly. Of course they won! Jimmy’s a very brilliant lawyer. Are you through for tonight, Norbert?” I asked, following the inquiry with an invitation to my place. Receiving Norbert’s affirmative answer, we rose from the table, paid the check, went out the door, and pushed through the crowd of autograph seekers to my waiting car. A short while later we were in an elevator at the Waldorf on our way to my suite on the sixty-fifth floor. Once comfortably seated inside, we picked up our conversation where we had left it. Three of the girls have quite a setup,” Babs began. Beverly Miller, Adelaide Manning, and Ruth Martel have started an office. Beverly is an established psychiatrist, Adelaide is her nurse, and Ruth is her receptionist. Loretta ' Machadoi is in the ' Waves’ and is stationed in China. I got a letter from Loretta saying that she met Henry Boutin and Roger Minville, who are in the Merchant Marine, there.” Speaking of the service,” Connie interposed, Gus Archer is a five star general, and Henry Rose is a Colonel.” We were all pleased to hear that. Norbert, who had been silent for some time, inquired, Does anyone know anything about Eleanor Conboy?” Sure,” Connie rep lied. She and Marjorie Garside are working at the Fall River Telephone Company. In Providence Claire Talbot has an interesting job at the Typewriter Company testing the typewriters to see that they work perfectly.” Oh,” said Babs, I almost forgot that Nancy Borden and Claire Rod¬ erick have started a day nursery with Eunice Simcock as their dietician. Paul¬ ine Levesque has become a very successful jewelry designer, and Barbara Larrabee is the Beauty Editor for The Ladies’ Home Journal.” Did you know that Douglas Borden has quite a large manufacturing company?” Connie resumed. They’re manufacturing an atomic robot which does all kinds of work, invented by Norman Martin and Charles Lingard. Douglas employed Ida Wood as his secretary. Don’t stop me, please. I flew from Providence to New York, and do you know who flew the plane? . . . Joe LaRochelle. I was even more surprised to see Anne Fay an and Janice Ford, both stewardesses for Eastern Airlines.” Connie paused to take a breath. Jack Eddy is a midget race car driver and has built quite a reputation for him¬ self. Cecile Ledoux runs a little tearoom called the Chitchat Tearoom on Main Street in Swansea. Well, I guess that’s all.” At Connie’s sigh we ail laughed. That’s quite a summary, only there are a few people that you didn’t include in that version of Burkes’ ' Concilliation of America’.” said Norbert. You forget to mention that William Ethier sings commercials on the radio, and Dick Enos has his own barber shop in Hollywood. Also Robert Worthen has his own business which, is monograming coal scuttles. I don’t know how he is making out with it though.” At this point Babs yawned and stated (a little wearily perhaps), George Dattoli has bought out the chain of Rexall Drug stores and has Den nis McGowan as his partner. Leading his own, orchestra, Fred Burgess has risen to the place once occupied by Gene Krupa.” Wait ’till you hear this one!” Connie Burst in. Ray Couturier is the superintendent of the Shirley reformatory! Imagine!” That reminds me,” I said, Philip Gladue has won so many cups at regattas that he doesn’t have room in the house for all of them. Lester McNeil is going to run in the next election on the Coagulationist ticket, a new party of which he is the leader. He has quite a following and has the Republicans and the Democrats worried.” The yawn that Babs started had now gone completely around our little circle. Connie began, I have to catch an early train in the . . . Did you hear about Lois Grover’s playing the organ at Radio City Music Hall?” Norbert interrupted. She is wonderful.” Connie tried agaiin, I really must . . . . ” And that Robert Deubel is a Fuller Brush Man?” I really have to .... ” And Louise Manning is married and has six children?” We all laughed at poor Connie trying so hard ' to leave. We’re all going in a minute, Connie, but first, have we forgotten any¬ one?” said Babs wrinkling her brow in thought. I broke the resulting silence with Charles Kenyon is a florist, and he did the Robert Swain wedding, when Bob married that dark-haired girl, I forget her name. Oh, Albert Stevens discovered another gold mine for Jean Watkinson (he handles all her affairs). That’s her third one this year.” Standing up Norbert concluded, Joan Wright is in the movies and Marjorie Williams is her agent. I think that covers everybody.” Yes, I think it does, so I’m going home,” Connie exclaimed. This has been fun,” said Norbert. We should get together more often.” We will,” I responded, opening the door. I’ll see to that.” As they walked down the corridor chatting to each other, I closed the door on the memories of what has been the happiest days in my life . . . . school days! Samuel Buffington We, the members of the Class of 1949 of the Joseph Casa High School in Swansea, Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim this to be our last will and testament: To the Faculty: The Class of 1949 leaves the sincere gratitude and deep¬ est appreciation of all its members for their constant guidance, generous assistance, daily encouragement, and tireless efforts in teaching us. Your efforts have not been in vain. To the Juniors, we give our dignity, our intelligence, our importance, our friend liness, and the position of Seniors, the most respected and cherished position, since we all work three long, hard years to attain it. To the Sophomores, we bestow our patience, perseverance, and endur¬ ance, of which they need much to successfully complete their high school life. To the Freshmen, we leave our tactfulness, our good manners, and the reassurance that high school days don’t last as long as they seem. They are over almost too quickly, but it pays to work hard and do one’s best, for if one does not, he will realize it only too sadly when it is too late. To next year’s Freshmen Class, we leave the school, only slightly damaged. Individual students leave other treasures which are as follows: Claire Roderick bestows her smiling dimples on Charlotte Duckworth. Albert Ledoux leaves his diminutive stature to Charles Ormerod. Susan Waring bequeaths her poise to Jane Hodgkinson. Eleanor Conboy and Cecile Ledoux leave their jobs in the cafeteria to anyone who may qualify. Charles Kenyon leaves to become a big oil magnet. Ruth Martel bequeaths her bangs to Joy Deane. Carry on, Joy! Augustus Archer leaves his neatness as an example. June Entwistle leaves her treasurer’s books to anyone who has the patience to painfully extract the money from the students. Pauline Levesque leaves us wondering who will take the menu around to all the teachers next year. Constance Misiorski and George Dattoli leave the mispronunciation of their names. George Lake, Philip Gladue, and Douglas Borden leave to go sailing Good luck, boys! Lois Grover bequeaths her nimble piano fingers to Dorothy MacDonald. Hope Pontes wills her natural curly hair (how the girls envy it) to Priscilla McCann. Henry Rose and Leo Picard leave wishing that they could stay around for a few more years. Marjorie Williams leaves her loquaciousness to Lois Loyd. William Ethier leaves his tall build to Harry Manning. Samuel Buffington leaves with a grateful sigh from the teachers. Albert Stevens leaves in a flash for fear that someone might invite him to come back. Loretta Machado and Raymond Couturier leaves memories of their mis¬ chievousness with the teachers. Philip Griffin and Joseph LaRochelle leave many tire marks in the back yard. Barbara Larrabee wills her good looks to all those who need them. Please girls, don’t push! The line forms to the right. Louise Manning doesn’t want to leave her popularity behind her. Mildred Reed leaves a big stack of absentee slips to replace the ones she has used. Robert Smith leaves still snapping pictures with his camera, which has supplied half the school with snapshots. Nancy Borden gladly bestows her seat in Latin II on anyone who would really like it. Joan Wright leaves her place on the cheering squad to all those hope¬ ful aspirants who will try out next year. Helen Sykes would leave some of her features but she says she’d look very peculiar without them. Bob Worthen leaves his pipe to all those who smoke cornsilk behind the barn. Jane Murray leaves her pep to the vitamin factory. Lester McNeil leaves his current events knowledge to anyone who- reads nothing but the funnies. Richard Enos leaves the title Best Sport” hoping that it will be at¬ tributed to Case High School in all its sports. Jean Watkinson bequeaths her blue eyes to Jack Benney. Henry Boutin leaves a bit dazed that it’s all over. Norman Martin leaves his tactfulness as an example. Robert Duckworth bestows his optimism on James Conole. Janice Ford leaves to run for the first woman president of the United States. Robert Deubel leaves quietly as a gentleman should. Norbert Moniz leaves to rival Perry Como. Watch out, Perry! Beverly Miller leaves a stack of secretary books almost as high as she is. Beverly, didn’t you ever get writer’s cramp? Franklin Gray leaves many dents in and around the school to testify ro his presence these four long years. Robert Swain leaves his ability at forgery to the underworld. Dennis McGowan bequeaths his dignity to James Greer. Written, signed, sealed, and delivered this sixteenth day of June, in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty-nine. GOOD NEIGHBOR CLUB CAMERA CLUB CHEERLEADERS Stimulating the supporters of Case, the cheerleaders, under the leadership of Miss Dorothy Rech, escorted the team to fame. They’ve cheered the boys through thick ’n thin”, and have displayed exceptionally good school spirit. Jane Murray and Barbara Marr, co-head cheerleaders, six follows, Joy Deane, Joan Hancock, Beverly Jacobson, Dorothy MacDonald, Hope Pontes, and Susan Waring, and substitutes, Gene Benyon, Sally Chace, Carolyn Doug¬ lass, Louise Manning, and Joan Wright were the members of the cheering squad. Pep assemblies held weekly throughout the football season helped the victorious team and aroused true school spirit. FOOTBALL Case High, completing one of its better than average seasons, was rep¬ resented on the gridiron by a strong and willing team. The Case Cardinals started their season by taking an inexperienced St. Anderw’s team 20-0. Then playing their first Narry League game, they whipped Dartmouth 6-0. Taking a trip to Nantucket, the Cardinals remained unscored upon by downing Nantucket High 32-0. Returning for their third home game, they rolled over Holy Family 45-0. But in the next game Case met a strong Diman eleven and tied 13-13 for the second successive season. Then traveling to Dighton, Case met a powerful rival whom they have never beaten, Dighton High. These two squads battled evenly for four periods and emerged with a 13-13 tie. The next opposing team was a feared St. Anthony’s eleven who were defeated but once in eight games. A close battle was fought by the two powerhouses but St. Anthony’s managed to pull ahead and take the game, 6-0, for the Cardinals’ first defeat. Then the game which meant everything to the team, the Somerset game, was played. This contest was what the team, especially the seniors, were looking forward to all season. A cold Thanksgiving morning produced a good crowd who witnessed a clean, hard-fought game. Case and those joy¬ ous seniors left the field thrilled with a victory that they will long remember. The score was 7-0. FOOTBALL (FIRST TEAM) The Case squad, largely made up of Seniors, finished third in the Narry League competition with a won five, tied two, and a lost one record. This was a splendid job and a welcome tribute to Coach Bannister who had to really work hard with this team. The members of the squad who received letters were: James Britland, Captain; Kenneth Daniello, Robert Deubel, Richard Enos, Franklin Gray, Richard Greene, James Greer, Hugh Kenworthy, Charles Kenyon, Rodney Kerr, Charles Lingard, Norman Martin, Robert Mickool, Norbert Moniz, Henry Rose, Wallace Sunderland, Robert Swain, and Howell Swarm. James Britland was placed on the Narry League All Star First Team, while Wallace Sunderland, Robert Swain, and Norman Martin made second team berths. Wallace Sunderland was elected to be the captain of Case’s football team next year. BASKETBALL This year’s basketball team, regardless of its lack of a home court, was expected to better its last year’s record. Live letter men turned out in addition to Robert Johnson and Charles Kenyon who were expected to add strength to the team that was lacking last season. Robert Swain, who was placed on the All Narry Second Team last season, was captain of this year’s team. Thus it was that a well rounded team played its first game against a prefavored Holy Lamily team. It was a close game all the way with Case losing in the final quarter by a deficit of eight points. Coach Bannister made several shifts in the lineup and instituted some new plays in a move to speed up the attack. These resulted in a thrilling one point victory over Dighton. Lollowing the Dighton game, the team, in high spirits, went to Segre- gansett to play Bristol County Agricultural School. The game was- another close affair with Case coming out on top again to establish its longest winning streak of the year. A week later Case suffered a setback when Captain Robert Swain was sidelined indefinitely due to a recurrent back injury. The 1948-1949 varsity, consisting of James Britland, Herman Howarth, Robert Johnson, Charles Kenyon, James Leavitt, Wallace Sunderland, and Robert Swain, wish the best of luck to the team of 1950. BASEBALL Case High entered the 1949 baseball season in defense of the Narragan- sett League Title with only four boys returning from the 1948 team. Since the majority of last year’s players had graduated, Coach Bannister had a little trouble in forming a starting lineup that worked well together. Many of the previously occupied positions being left vacant, quite a number of hopeful candidates were able to get their chance to develop into worth while baseball players. To try to equal the fine showing of last year’s team, these boys had to play heads-up” baseball. ALMA MATER Our strong bond can ne’er be broken Form’d in dear Case High, Far surpassing wealth unspoken, Seal’d by friendship’s tie. Chorus Alma Mater-Alma Mater, Deep graven on each heart, Ode victorious, we go singing As from these halls we depart. Mem’ry’s leaflets close shall twine Around our hearts for aye And waft us back o’er life’s broad track To pleasures of past day.
