She began in 1971 as an aide in the junior high; then, she worked in tne district office. She was a pleasant contact for par- ents, students and staff. In early February, the school board honored the following personnel for outstanding work; Debbie Faber, Ray Weaver, Kathy Butler, Lynda Me Carthy, Anne Hermann, Laurie Sequeira. A student council committee recog- nized four teachers as outstanding staff members for the first semes- ter: Scott Whitwer, Kathy Butler, Carol Hoffos and Debbie Faber. Mr. Leonard Federico, superinten- dent of schools, was chosen to the Oregon School Activities Associ- ation (OSAA) executive borad. OSAA sets rules for all high school sports. The Oregon Athletic Director's As- sociation named George Milionis as state high school athletic direc- tor of the year. Mr. Milionis has been athletic director (AD) at Cas- cade for 17 years and was assigned to the Class AA golf tournament five years ago. Mr. Milionis is currently president of Inter-League Council, represent- ing the Willamette Valley Officials Association. As an AD, Mr. Milionis has several different responsibilities: schedul- ing games for sports, hiring offi- cials for home contests, arranging bus transportation, buying athletic equipment and overseeing coaches. He has coached both JV boys' bas- ketball and varsity track at CUHS. Student council recognized three teachers as outstanding faculty for the second semester: Mrs. Trish Hanna, Mr. James Wisely and Mr. Pat Godfrey. At the student council spring conference, Mrs. Kathy But- ler was honored as one of the top six advisers in Oregon. Jera Lyons was crowned queen for the homecoming dance. The dance's theme was Heaven . The Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Scottish Rite Temple in Sa- lem. Tracy Thompson, who was es- corted by Darrel Lawrence, was crowned queen. The prom theme was A touch of class . Lunch-time entertainment includ- ed intramural sports, an air band contest and the slave auction. Becky Albus and Hol- ly Walker were named homecoming prin- cesses. Noontime activities were a balloon pop. toi- let-paper weave, a banana-split-eating con- test, and scavenger hunt. The seniors were disqualified from the banana-split-eating contest because they unfairly disposed of some of their ice cream. This small setback did not stop the seniors from racking up points in other areas. They won first place for the week, with 145 points; sophomores were second, with 125 points; and juniors came in third, with 115 points. 'This was the closest finish that we've had in a long time ' said Mr. Harry Walker, vice-princi- pal. Alison Capps said, The different ac- tivities — banana-split feed, toilet-paper, and scavenger hunt — allowed us to watch fellow students make fools of themselves. The spirit days were Cartoon Day, chosen by the sophomores; Toga Day, juniors; Around-the-World Day, chosen by seniors; dress-up day, and black and gold day. The seniors had the best day. Around-the-World resulted in a beautiful hall decoration con- sisting of flags from the nations of the world, said junior, Dwight Bales. The football team won the Friday game against North Marion, 31-6. Wrapping up the spirited week was the homecoming dance. The decorations were great, but the music could have been better, said senior, Beth DeHut. Said junior, Kirk Nichols, I was proud to be a part of Homecoming '85 here at Cas- cade. It made me feel a sense of pride in our school, our community, and our student body. The sophomore students were asked what the most difficult adjustment they had in the transition between junior high and sen- senior high school: Terri Guild: The homework is a lot harder in the required classes and takes a lot more time. Darcie Kidder: There is a lot more responsi- bility when it comes to classes. You can't slack off in class, and you have to be there on time. Scott Bates: Coming into the high school was like starting the seventh grade over again. Marie Spear: The grading is a lot harder and you have to work a lot harder to achieve the goals you have set. Kim Davidson: It seems like the teachers are giving more homework and are harder to get along with. Bill Phillips: The classes in general are a lot harder. There's more homework, and some of the teachers grade on a harder scale. Mike Thomas: The halls in the high school are so crowded you can not move through them. Jeff Burnell: There are more electives to choose from and less required classes. LEFT: Shannon Helton takes a break during class. I walked into English class with my shirt tucked into my underwear, and my under- wear was about six inches above my pants. I was so embarrassed when I was walking through the square and slipped on a banana peel and fell on my hands and knees in front of my boyfriend, and all his friends started laughing. I called a wrong number, and I thought it was the right person playing a joke on me. I called him a bunch of names, and it turned out to really be the wrong number. I couldn't believe the first time I tried for my license. I ran a stop sign. Then, I finally got my license and in less than 24 hours I to- taled my car on the way to school. My most embarrassing moment was when I was at this party and I was really drunk and my mom found me and started dragging me out in front of everyone. I was just learning to ski and I couldn't stop and ran right into a really pretty girl. I had a couple of friends in the car with me. when I turned down the gutt going the wrong way down a one way street. They told me to think, I said It's too hard to think and drive at the same time. ' I was changing out of my mini skirt into my jeans on the bus when my mini-skirt went up before my pants did, and the van that was going by saw me. Then, I had to go in front of the student body for a volleyball introduction, and everyone started yelling BA . I went up to a car that looked exactly like mine and tried to unlock it. when the own- ers came up and asked me what I was doing to their car. Anyway that particular day the boys broke into my locker, and Matt Primbs pulled them out and flaunted them all around. I couldn't believe it, I was so embarrassed be- cause they were really big and ugly, so I yelled, They're Helene's. Matt Primbs stuck them on Kathy Sherman's head, and Helene was laughing until I said they were hers. Then she said they were mine, and everyone believed her.
