The team seemed to lack in confidence for themselves-they needed more go power! One member of the team commented. It wasn't our best year, but Cascade will have better ones to come. 10 Varsity Squad First Row: T. Newton, R. Fry, G. Graham. D. Gibson, J. Archer, D. Morris; Second Row: D. Dodson. D. Bates. The crowning of Queen Delilah Taylor on Thursday, October 24, started off the 1968 Homecoming events. Later that day, a serpentine was held to help build up team spirit. After returning from the serpentine, a huge bonfire was started by Queen Delilah, with the help of some Varsity C boys. The people cheered as the Trojan dummy burned. As the players ran onto the field, balloons were broken and turned loose, in accordance with the Homecoming theme of Up, Up and Away! During half-time. Queen Delilah and princesses Janice and Caroll, rode a float beautifully decorated by Cascade students. Riding in convertibles were the remaining seven Top Ten Homecoming girls. The 1968 Homecoming game ended with the Cascade Cougars mauling the J.F.K. Trojans with the score of 45 to 6. A Homecoming dance was held Saturday night in the Senior High School balcony which ended the festive Homecoming activities. 12 Cascadians Become Supermen 13 First Row: C. Brasfield, C. Wells, D. Miss Dashiell replied, “it was a good team, as good or better than anyone we played; but we didn't really reach our potential. The girls won two games out of five, Scio and Santiam. Coach Dashiell looks like she just can't believe it as she keeps score. 15 Kneeling: Rick Hall, Jeff Collier, Jim Hampton, Dave Ballweber, Dennis Day. Cascade didn't play and win the way they started out to do in this year's basketball season. There were only four wins, and eighteen losses, but no one can really say that they didn't try to win each game played. Our boys had a lot to be proud of because of their ambition to win, even though their hard work was not as successful as they wanted it to be. No school or team can fall behind in their sportsmanship because of one year's bad luck. Mr. Oppenlander as the coach helped the juniors who played on the Varsity team during the 1968-69 basketball season to improve themselves to really be prepared for a year of victory in the 1969-70 basketball season. 16 Varsity Basketeers Have Season of Bad Luck 17 J V’s Win League Trophy, Present Coach Plaque 18 SEASON SCORES OPPONENT CASCADE Jefferson 14 75 Lebanon 37 40 McNary 41 51 Lebanon 33 41 McNary 30 34 Scio 25 42 Regis 45 49 North Marion 30 51 Stayton 31 37 Chemawa 43 54 J.F.K. 44 57 OPPONENT CASCADE Woodburn 34 46 North Marion 42 54 Stayton 42 45 Serra 29 36 Chemawa 37 43 Gladstone 53 65 J.F.K. 43 53 Woodburn 34 51 Gladstone 72 44 Serra 52 59 19 First Row: C. Cascade wrestlers. It was the general contention of coaches, spectators and wrestlers that the Cougar Team did a fine job this season. They succeeded in wrestling their way to first place at the District meet, and they sent eleven wrestlers to the State Tournament held at Oregon State University. Of the eleven wrestlers who went to the state meet, three received a placing. They were: 6th place—Russ Ivie at 157 lbs.; 5th place—Duane Ballweber at 115 lbs.; 3rd place—Pete Peterson wrestling at 98 lbs. The team was coached by Mr. Connelly and assistant coach Mr. Klein. It was under their leadership that the team grappled their way to so many victories. On these pages are some of the holds and predicaments that faced our wrestlers during the 1969 season. A memorial fund was started by Art Waldorf's mother, and the money was given to the school, to purchase something in Art's Memory. It was decided that a plaque would be purchased reading: Art Waldorf Memorial in honor of the Cascade Students who have been killed in Viet Nam Art Waldorf Class of 1965 Rick Stinnett James H. Stuart Class of 1964 Class of 1965 This plaque is mounted by the gym door. During the memorial, Lt. Col. Bean, of the Oregon National Guard, gave a very impressive and appropriate speech, claiming that these boys will have died in vain, if we neglect their vision. He also stated that we should take heed and appreciate these boys who have died for the future and to work for our country's future so that these boys will not have died in vain. Mr. Dutton gave the eulogy, in which he stated that they were all fine boys and a real tribute to Cascade. He also said that we should be careful that we don't trample underfoot . . . the ideals for which these men have given their lives. A member from all four branches of the Armed Services was present for the memorial service. Jess Lewis, graduated of Cascade and classmate of Art Waldorf, presented a special revolving wrestling plaque, purchased in Art's memory, to senior David Bates. In Jess' words, Art was one of the best men I've ever known. Many students complained about different pages being taken out or put in. It was hard for them to understand that as the school changes, so does the annual. The Cascadian staff wanted to make this annual the best one the school has ever had. To do so, they felt some changes had to be made from long-established practices. The staff has done its best to produce a top-quality annual for their school community. Equipment added to the department this year was a light board for negative identification and selection, a twin-lens reflex camera, and special filters and photographic paper for the darkroom. Also added was a course in photography for students interested in working towards an improved publication. Debbie Grenz attended the third annual High School Publications Workshop at Portland State College for a week the summer preceding her year as editor of the 1969 Cascadian. There she learned editing and page layout techniques and trends in modern yearbook practices. Student council paid her tuition. This was Mr. Hogan's third year as Cascadian advisor. He termed the year great—especially because of the capable leadership of our editor, Debbie. 51 Cougar Lair” Staff Changes Format of Paper Seated: L. Whitehead, K. Rouse, J. Brown, D. Davidson, D. George Olson, Editor Mr. Hogan, Advisor Paula Denman, Ad Manager and staff artist r 1' Greg Ray Julie Brown Terri Brown Phil Fitzner During the 1968-1969 school year the journalism staff, under the direction of junior George Olson, changed the format of the school paper from a four-column junior high sized paper to a five-column tabloid, unequalled in scope by most of the neighboring schools. The last issue of the year was changed in format again to stimulate a news magazine style in order to present more feature news, as opposed to the straight news, which the staff felt was merely a wordier restatement of much of the daily bulletin. Earlier in the year the advisor and five staff members attended an all-day conference for journalism students at the University of Oregon, which helped prepare them for their staff responsibilities and gave them many ideas for innovation in the Cougar Lair. 53 Hey! They made posters to fill the halls with spirit, they yelled at pep assemblies, se up the Homecoming activities, sold spirit stickers before games and matches, and yelled at all the sports events possible. Accompanying the chorus at the piano were senior Sandy Holford and junior Lyndon McGill. 87 Senior All-Night Party Was Fun for Everyone! The Senior All Night Party provided hours of fun and games for everyone. There was pool and ping-pong for the professionals, swimming for the water lovers, volleyball and basketball for the athletic-minded, dancing for the romanticists, even book reading for the intellectuals. Of course there was plenty of food and soft drinks for everyone. 88 School Board « Mr. Crane, Chairman Mr. McGill Mr. Kreger Mr. Goffin Mr. Henrikson Mr. Streight Mrs. Welter Mrs. Bruce 93 n.i Mrs. Harmon Mr. Godfrey Mrs. Haugen Miss Dashiell Mr. Fough Mr. Hinton Mr. Schuster Mr. Cox Mr. Peterson Bus Drivers: Shermacker, Jacobe, Kilmer, Connelly, Jones, Mickey (supervisor).
