CASCADIAN “68” Cascade Union High School Turner, Oregon A Message from Mr. Drake You have a fine school! How? Why? Things don't just happen. There must be a people who feel this need and have the will to make it happen. Cascade is fortu- nate it had the people when the need arose. The Cascade students now have a fa- cility for learning second to none in the state of Oregon. You have an area es- pecially designed for team teaching; you have a reading center providing for both visual and auditory study; you have areas providing for both large and small group instruction; you have a student center pro- viding for both learning and relaxation; you have adequate, well-equipped class- rooms; and you have a functional and well- designed gymnasium. Your building is designed with the flexibility to meet the changing needs of students to follow you. You have a faculty that has as its first goal the desire to provide you with the opportunity to learn and develop. You have a principal who both understands you and knows what it takes to make you an asset as a person now and what you need to be an asset to yourself and society in the future. One must become involved in what is happening or not happening around him. One cannot be all things or do all things; one has to make decisions based on what he feels are the important issues. Only if they are his convictions can he devote the time and energy required to carry forth the task to a successful conclusion. Many never feel the true SPIRIT OF ACTION since they never become wholly involved in any cause. They only participate in someone else's cause. To this point, the action has been that of your parents and teachers. You must now pick up this spirit. All that has gone before has only been a prelude to what may follow, and what may follow depends on the goals you have set for yourself whether you have caught the SPIRIT OF ACTION and have the will and desire to carry the action to a fulfill- ing conclusion! 2 Table of Contents Page Seniors .............................. 5 Fall - Winter ............................. 35 FOOTBALL HOMECOMING BASKETBALL WRESTLING HONOR STUDY HALL FACULTY BASKETBALL CHRISTMAS BALL CARNIVAL Spring TWIRP SEASON COTTON BALL DANCING CLUB BASKETBALL TRACK PROM Organizations PUBLICATIONS JOURNALISM LETTERMEN-BOOSTER CLUB PEP CLUB RALLY SQUAD BAND-CHORUS FFA-FHA VARSITY C DRAMA CLUB GIRLS LEAGUE COMM. Back 37 Top Ten o Cascade's 1967 Home- coming got officially un- der way with the tra- ditional lighting of the bonfire and burning of a Woodburn Bulldog effigy. The huge fire lit the night sky, as well as the spirit of the student body. Following the bonfire, students gathered in the student square for a night of dancing and fun. At intermission the top ten Senior girls and their es- corts were presented. The names of the three prin- cesses to reign over home- coming were then revealed. Leading the next dance were princesses, Teri Blackman, Sandi Butts, and Darletta Kilgore. The following night spirits were high at the game with Woodburn. Mums and balloons filled the air as the Cascade Cougars made their way onto the gaily decorated field. Highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Homecoming Queen Sandi Butts, by the preceding year's queen, Beckie Bar- tels. Sandi and her court Teri Blackman and Darletta Kilgore were then escorted around the field in a yel- low convertible driven by Ken Bales. The recipient of the five dollar cash prize in the float contest was the Junior Class. Their prize winning entry consisted of a large black and gold football helmet with white trim. Victory Bound was the theme of the annual home- coming dance. A Salem group, the Marquis pro- vided the music for the dance, which was sponsored by the Varsity Cheer- leaders. Cascade's 1967 Home- coming provided fun, en- tertainment, and excite- ment for many. SANDI BUTTS Homecoming Court TERI BLACKMAN DARLETTA KILGORE Aetion was the spirit of this year's football sea- son. Rallies was the word for this year's football spirit. Of the nu- merous car rallies held, the most elab- orate was the one for the Home Coming game against Wood- burn. CAR RALLY The cars were gayly decorated with posters predicting another Cougar Vic- tory. The serpen- tine wound through the towns in the community. The ser- pentines helped bring about the spirit that has been steadily missing for several years. 41 Cascade's football sea- •• ...in with a non-league opener with the Jefferson High Lions. The Cougars led at halftime but relinquished the lead to the Lions in the third quarter and were dealt an 18-21 loss. The Cougars looked as though they had developed into a complete team following a 6 to 6 tie with Gervais, and a 19-0 win over the Scio Loggers. However, the Cougars fell into a slump, dropping the next four league games. Following four defeats, the Cougars came through in great style upsetting arch rival Serra Catholic 13-0 on the Cougar's home field. Following the win over Serra, which could be termed the highlight of Cascade's football season, the Cougars rode their momentum trouncing Salem Academy 25-0 in the division playoffs. 42 All we need is a man over six feet tall. That was the feeling erf the coaches and players during the year's Var- sity season. Dave Ballweber adds another two points. The Varsity team did not come along until the last part of the season, winning two out of their last three games. The highlight of the season would have to be the win over Central that ended the season for the Cougar Cagers. The team played with great desire, which en- abled them to beat the much taller Central squad. The Cougar fans could look forward to an even bigger and better season for the following year. The Cascade J.V.'s were one of the best Cascade has ever had. The players on this team brought a great deal of height to the Varsity. With a little luck, the 1968-69 Cougar Varsity should be among the best Cascade has seen. 44 Bob Nixon in good form. Cougars Finish Season With A Roar Jimmy Jones in J.V. action. Most of this success was brought on by coach Connelly. He worked many hours with the boys getting them ready for each match. Without him the season would not have been as successful, was the feeling of the wrestling team. The district tournament was the close of the regular season for the Cougar Grapplers. These matches saw Cascade placing second in district and sending four wrestlers to the state meet in Corvallis. Out of these four wrestlers, three placed in State. Taking fifth place at 157 lbs. was Rick Weight; placing fourth at 130 lbs. was Marvin Klein; and placing second at 106 lbs. was Duane Ballweber. FACULTY GAME Everyone looks forward to the faculty basketball game. This year it was sponsored by the junior class. Instead of a J.V. game the women had a chance to show their skill at maneuvering a basketball, which was very entertaining as you can tell by the pictures. The faculty men from the junior high put up a great fight, but the men from the high school proved to be even better by winning the game. “Silver Bells,” Theme of Floyd and Valenda flash bright smiles, It was very hard to get camera-shy Duane proof of an enjoyable evening. to pose for this picture. Silver Bells: That was the theme of the Student Council sponsored Christmas Ball, held in the new student square. The couples danced to the music of Wally Johnson and his orchestra. Everyone enjoyed a festive atmosphere which was set off by gay decora- tions. A small Christmas tree in the building was dwarfed by a 20 foot tree in the court. With all the lights and thoughts of Christmas, and a good band, everyone enjoyed this gay event. Mac rids himself of the camera long enough to enjoy a dance with Peggy. Christmas Ball Mr. and Mrs. Welter had fun keeping the dance floor good and slick. Smiling Terri Brown gets help with her corsage as Vicky and John look on Mr. and Mr. Kreger pose by the Christmas tree. Mr. Bates helps himself to the punch. Wally Johnson and his orchestra provide the music. Fun, food, and fool- ishness was the order of the night as Cascade's Carnival got off to a roaring start. Teenagers packed in like sardines, while the Sophomores packed in the money at their dance. The Blue Lights , a group of students, wailed with the popular groovy beat. The ever mighty Sen- iors were mighty alright. Mighty covered with home- made pies of flour and water in their pie throw- ing booth. Aside from providing fun and entertainment for many, this year's carni- val netted a profit of $1,318.50 to go toward the building of the new covered stadium. The Cougars placed second in the league suffering only three defeats. Two of them being to league champion Stayton. This was the last year for Coach Peterson at Cascade. Next year he will accept the job of head coach at Tigard High School. The team ana students here at Cascade will miss him greatly in the years to come. Larry Koenig winds up for the pitch. Even though the Cougar thin clads were small in number they made up for it in desire and hard work. At some dual meets Cascade would have only one man in each event and other schools had at least three. Cascade had two outstanding senior letterman. Tom Taylor usually scored well for the team in three events, the pole vault, javelin, and high jump. Garry Schaefer was Cascade's outstanding two miler. Garry won all his races except the last one at District where he took second. So hats off to all our track men for a great year. Dwayne Hayes finishing the mile run. Hey, you dropped something. They make up one of the most active clubs at Cascade. One of their projects during the year is the annual Varsity C -Booster Club carnival. It is one of the lar- gest money making projects carried out by the Varsity C . They also hold an annual party in May for the members of the club. This year the boys ate pizza and bowled throughout the night. If one sees boys wearing two-piece swim suits or dresses with high heels they are likely to be Varsity C in- ductees being initiated into the club. At the last of the school year 12 mem- bers were initiated in this manner so that they might carry on the name of Varsity C . Jimmy Hampton uses Crest. Chuck Barnes has contrasting attributes.
