Black and gold your banners waving, We're out to make our name, With a fighting school spirit, We will win this game! 2 MEMORIES - - - 1966 TABLE OF CONTENTS MEMORIES.......................4 DEDICATION.....................8 ADMINISTRATION.................9 SENIOR CLASS..................17 UNDERCLASSMEN.................37 ORGANIZATIONS.................... Water snuffs flames Several hours after fire, gym continues to smol- der. Saturday, February 19, 1966, the north haif of Cascade High burned to the ground. The gym area, P.E. facilities, athletic equipment, music room, stage and drama department, science labs, sophomore and freshman English rooms, and recreational area were destroyed. The fire caused an estimated $400,000 worth of damage. Students were given an unexpected week’s vacation, but many forfeited it to help clean the school. The Board of Directors, administrative officers, and faculty members held emergency meetings to try to determine how to keep students in school for the remainder of the year. Several plausable solutions were discussed. Classrooms are destroyed by fire. 4 The following are three of the discussed solutions (1) split the district into the other high school districts — surrounding schools expressed a willingness to help, but were already filled to capacity or over crowded; (2) Stayton High offered the District the use of its plant from 4 P.M. until 10 P.M. — parents stated concern of students getting home after 12:30 P.M.; (3) try to double shift in the remaining end of the school building. The double shift plan was adopted because it was the plan that met with the least criticism. Seniors and juniors attended from 7 A.M. until 12:15 P.M. and sopho- mores and freshmen attend from 12:30 P.M. until 5:35 P.M. Firemen combat intense heat and flames. Rear parking area is silent witness to tragedy. Intense heat shown by the condition of iron pillars. Steam rises from cooling debris. 5 Chemicals remain undamaged by fire. Few walls withstand terrific heat and flames. Single light withstands fire. Clean up work begins. Grim view of school revealed after fire was put out. 6 Truck carries away debris. Remains of school tell tragic tale. Fire is stopped near the library. Students view Girl's P.E. area. Undamaged section contrasts with the damaged section. 7 Mr. John Seims has taught at Cascade since 1950. During this time, he has taught Biology, General Science, geography, P.E. and Basic Math. Also he has ad- vised the Junior class, sophomore class, and Dancing club. He has coached basketball, football, track and wrestling. His 1958 wrestling team won the League championship. In 1963, he was made an honory member of the Nation Honor Society. In my own life, the occasion which stands out predominately and represents a very high honor, is the confidence expressed in your selection of myself. Ambition and loyalty are sterling characteristics always found in those who are dependable. Under trying conditions I salute the annual staff and their instructor. “He profits most who serves best” is a motto that might well be remembered by both faculty and students. “Successful teaching involves relationship with so many dif- ferent responsibilities. I wish to thank the faculty and students for their united support.” AlW 1AII STMT I OH « r ADMINISTRATION On behalf of the school and the administration, I would like to express thanks to you, the 1965-66 stu- dent body of Cascade Union High School, for the patience and the understanding you have displayed through the fire, the double shifting, and the debate over doing away with your school. My most sincere hope is that your education has not suffered because of it. SCHOOL BOARD John C. One of the highlights of this year's activities was the hilarious Donkey Basketball game held in the gym of Aumsville grade school. The big event of the year is the FFA banquet which is held annually. ASSEMBLIES CAN BE INTERESTING It's impolite to stare! Our group had 60% fewer cavities! Striving hard to live up to last year's reputation they have succeeded with a 6 win, 4 lost, record. With the many injuries and problems these wrestlers have faced they have done a fine job. When the fire left them without mats, uniforms, equipment, and a place to practice, they were not disillu- sioned. Borrowing of Scio’s mats, uniforms from Kelso, Washington, Turner Grade school gym for practice, and donations they completed their wrestling season. We wish to congratulate the coaches, and the whole team for the fine job they've done. 86 SENIOR AND JUNIOR WRESTLERS FIRST ROW, Left to Right, Bottom to Top: B. Carpenter. R. Huddleston, A. There’s more to it than meets the eye. When playing baseball, every- thing gets practice--including the tongue. They call me RATman”!! I only stand this way when there's a bat in my hand.
