V THE The CASCADE UNION HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL STAFF PRESENTS: I960 Cascadian The intense interest mirrored on these faces typifies the fine school spirit displayed this year by all the students at C.U.H.S. The twig is so easily bended I have banished the rule and the rod: I have taught them the goodness of knowledge, They have taught me the goodness of God; My heart is the dungeon of darkness, Where I shut them for breaking a rule; My frown is sufficient correction; My love is the law of the school. Charles M. Dickinson The Children Are the teachers of today too easy with their students? The days of teaching by the hickory stick are certainly gone. Today, freedom is taught and practiced in our schools, but freedom is not given without responsibility. Students of our modem schools, such as Cascade, live, work, and play in a true democracy. They have a better chance than their parents and grand parents had, to express themselves and learn about the modern age in which they live. With this opportunity for real freedom, they receive the experience that will make them the leaders of tomorrow. As we dedicate our yearbook to Cascade on it's tenth birthday, we would also like to pay a special tribute to the teachers and especially the people who were present at the birth of our school in 1950. These teachers as pictured on the opposite page are: Louis J. Urhammer, Harold Dutton, Eleanor DeCamp, Ruth Riches, Mary Seim, John Seim, Milton Gralap and Martha Angus. Pictured below is pretty, Bette Ann Hallam whose sparkling personality, willingness to work and do a good job of it, won her the honor of Cascade's Girl of the Year. r The 3rd annual Meier and Frank's style show sponsored by Cascade's Girls League sported new and fresh spring fashions that delighted all present including Girls League members, mothers of Cascade's student body and special guests. The style show was followed by the traditional Mother-Daughter Tea. Beverly Rutherford models one of Meier and Franks lovely fashions, a party dress, suitable for almost any occassion.. Pat Hudson steps out in a semi-formal with the new empire waistline.. Nancy Gentry is all ready for an afternoon of shopping in a smart suit with pleated skirt and boxie jacket. Colleen Hecht wears a sleek spring coat and flowery hat. Maxine Jones is pictured in a checked coat with turned back sleeves. Girls' League President, Sharon Choate, presents Cascade's Girl of the Year, Bette Ann Hallam. The May Day celebration packed the gymnasium of Cascade with a crowd that thoroughly enjoyed the pro- ceedings. Student Body Officers Steve Barber, Sgt-at-Arms; Dennis Pope, 2nd Treasurer; Larry Mickey, President Lynel Seines, Vice President; Shirley Tipton, Secretary; Will McGill, 1st Treasurer; A dimly lit gymnasium was converted into a beatnik refuge and Cascade's students really played the part. • .A real beat cat, Larry Mickey, gets ready to fake out for about 400 winks as that crazy man, Ricky Hofmann, looks on. • Solemn Sharon Choate cuts a few capers with a very suspicious looking character by the name of Jay Myers... • The chick with the catty looking eyes is Donna Wallace, but the cat she's dancing with is unidentified. .Janet Stromeyer drags Roger Barber out of a dark comer... Man, like this is the craziest! squeals a kookie chick called Nancy Gentry. Her ginchy beat is Adrain Mills. .. The Big Daddy, Jerry Baker, squirrels around the dance floor with Laura Lee Gavette... All in all, everyone agreed it was the beatinest and best dance ever. The Cotton Ball, with the theme Swing into Spring was a real swinging affair enjoyed by all. Lloyd Ralphs and Tonia Moon were named Mr. FFA and Miss FHA. The Echotones, a swinging combo from Portland provided the music for the dance, sponsored by the FFA and the FHA jointly. New members of the National Honor Society are: Will McGill, Roger Barber, Jerry Foster, Gus Albertson, Wayne Fretwell, Tom Tomlin- son, Julia Cullison, Judy Bartels, Shirley Tip- ton, Colleen Hecht, Bill Plunkett, Pat Smith, Patsy Freeman, and Tonia Moon. Shireen Kogwal, exchange student from Pakistan and guest speaker at assembly. A tea in the Library followed the National Honor Society Assembly. Doug Nohlgren, former exchange student to England also spoke at the N. H.S. assembly. ■ Top Wrestlers, Jim Lewis, Wendell Stanley, and Dennis Derkson, triumphantly carry Mr. Seim to the State Meet. Intramural Champs: Chuck Way, Wendell Stanley, Dennis Derkson, Gus Albertson, Ray Unger, and Adrain Mills. Cascade Union High School faculty members were honored at a special Teacher Appreciation Day assembly. Clash Day gave Cascade's students a chance to show themselves off at their worst. Winners, with probably the most horrible outfits we ever hope to see in Cascade's halls, were Bev Rutherford, and Roger Bradley. Back Row: Lyle King, coach; Doug Arthur; Chuck Way; Lloyd Ralphs; Will McGill; Delvis Freeman, Bill Plunkett. Led by All-Star nominees Gus Albertson, Chuck Way, Jerry Foster, and Marv LaRont, the Cascade varsity baseball squad marched through a rain drenched season of postponements and cancellations to wind up in a tie with Serra Catholic Sabers for the Southern Division championship. The Cougars then lost a tough decision to the Sabers in a play-off game remembered mainly for the difficulty encountered in finding a suitable time and place to play between showers. 9 ° TRACK Front Row: Steve Hagan, Aaron Thayer, Jerry Crane, Ralph Fough, Roger Bliss, Dutch LaRont, Gene Shirley. 2nd Row: Allen Townsend, David Wells, Tony Mills, Dale Mitchell, Gary Klokstad, Bob Ruby, Georqe Zwicker, Jerry Clark, Floyd Strode. Back Row: Dan Hartman, Larry Mickey, Mike Helvey, Jim Crane, Rudy Herr, coach; Fritz Keudell, Jeff Manning, Calvin Miller, Gary Helton. Pictured in the surrounding photos are the representatives of pro- bably the finest Track and Field squad in Cascade's history. Paced by two seniors, the sensational Bob Ruby, and hardworking Jim Crane, and backed up by an array of fleet underclassmen, the Cougars were always well represented and turned in several remarkable performances. Ruby was eligible for the state tournament in four events, including the broad jump, where he finished 2nd with a new school record of 21 feet, 11 inches, and the 440 yard dash where he set a new school and district record with a 52. 8 clocking in the district meet. Crane climaxed four years of intense effort with a 16.0 clocking in the high hurdles for a new school record. Five J. V. records were also broken; two by Dutch LaRont, one each by Aaron Thayer and Jerry Clark, and the 880 yard relay team of Tony Mills, Allen Townsend, Dutch LaRont, and Fritz Keudell. Team highlights were the highest finish of Mid- Willamette schools in the Hayward relays and the first place finish in the broad jump relay at the Central Relays. CLASS FAVORITES Selected Friendliest by their fellow classmates: Bette Ann Hallam and Vaughn Witzel. Jean Quinn and Bob Ruby were chosen the most Athletic. Most Courteous according to the Senior Class are Sharon Choate and Eugene Poitras. Best All-Round students in the Class of '60 are Lloyd Ralphs and Bev Rutherford. Wittiest (and they can take a joke on themselves) are Barbara Myers and George Zwicker. COMMENCEMENT Pictured above is a group from North Santiam that, like many others from the several communities that make up Cascade's student body, finished 12 years of school together. The Class of 1960, largest to ever graduate from Cascade Union High School, went through their final paces on Thursday, May 26, at 8:00P.M. As Salutatorian, Jean Quinn gave the welcoming speech. Clifford Cookson, Valedictorian, spoke later in the program. Guest speaker was Howell Appling Jr., Secretary of State. Ralph McKenzie announced the scholarship winners and also the top ten students in the graduating class. After Louis Uhrhammer distributed the diplomas, the Class of 1960 left the halls of Cascade amid laughter and tears. Most of them attended the Last Blast all night party at the YMCA. So the final chapter is recorded of the Think Big Class. Martha Hatch and Del vis Freeman try on their robes for re hers a 1 of the Baccalaureate and Graduation exercises.
