Each girl participating in the Homemaking program has the opportunity to develop interests, skills and wholesome attitudes through a variety of real group and individual experiences in al 1 phases of home living Class work in clothing, personal living, personal appearance, house- keeping, home decoration, foods, management, child care and home nursing, plus home experiences and fun together in activities help girls to develop an appreciation of the beauty and satisfactions to be found in everyday life and to have a better understanding of the responsibili- ties of home living. The F. H. A. has many activities during the school year. Among these are the district convention, individual projects for each girl, and joint parties with the F. F. A. boys. Monies for the treasury are raised chiefly through popcorn and doughnut sales. Advisor for the F. H. A. is Mrs. Eleanor DeCamp. 27 F. H. A. OFFICERS: L. Scofield, Parliamentarian; M. Papke, President; N. Hammer, Treasurer; C. Peters, Song Leader and Social Chairman; G. Riches, Vice President; S. (Cork) Laps ley, Reporter; C. LaRont, Secretary; R. Gilbert, Historian. The Cascade Cougars under Coach Cal Hersey had a very good season considering the team’s lack of experience and finished with sixteen wins and ten losses. The Cougars won nine conference games and lost five, including two with Stayton. Cascade’s loss to Stayton put them in second place in the Capitol Conference which the school joined this season. The Cougars went to the District 3-A2 Tournament and came home witha 3-1 record to place second among fourteen competing schools. Outstanding score maker for the season was Gene Speer with 326 points, followed by Jim Uhrhammer with 308, Jim Towery 214, Jerry Pflug 212, and John Grimes 140. Cascade will lose six lettermen this year: Graduating are ; Jerry Pflug, team captain, Jim Towery, John Grimes, Laurence Dively,Tim Husted, and Ron Korkow. 45 Gene Speer shoots jump shot as Jerry Pflug - Cascade and Bob Weddle, Stayton await re- bound. Cascade’s 1955 Baseball Team had a very successful season as they topped all league competition to win their fifth straight Capital League crown. The wi n earned them the right to face the powerful Banks Braves in the district playoffs. The hard-hitting 1956 team shows high promise since the Cougars lost only two members of last year’s championship nine. Cascade’s opponents will face the stiffest competition ever produced by the school. They had won all league games weather permitted prior to annual press time. This year Cascade will lose five of its strongest play- ers. Graduating are Bob Smith, Fred Brown, Team Captain, John Grimes, Lawrence Dively, and Jerry Pflug. 48 Veteran Cascade infielders for the '56 nine with Coach Bob Stewart. With a nucleus of three lettermen returning from last year’s team and a turnout of thirty boys, Cascade’s Cindermen opened the 1956 season with a meet at Stayton March 29. Most of the boys were freshmen and sophomores and they were backed by a few juniors and seniors. The track coach is Cal Hersey. The performances of the younger boys indicates the future possibility of a strong track team. Best performances noted have been by returning lettermen A. Spurlock, A. Schmidt, and G. Fredrickson, and by J. Baker, K. Cooke, b. Wilt, and G. Runions. Highlights of the 1956 Track Schedule were the Willamette Relays, Hayward Relays at Eugene, Capital Conference Meet, District 3 Meet at Monmouth, and the State Meet at Corvallis. Two meets, with Gervais and Serra, were held at Cascade. 50 George Fredrickson battles opponent at finish. Johnny Baker pulls ahead in High Hurdles for victory over straining opponent. Wrestling Team Cascade’s 1955-56 wrestling team coached by Bob Stewart participated in a program designed to develop and maintain interest primarily among lower classmen. A total of thirty-two boys turned out and among these one senior, three juniors, and eleven sophomores were awarded letters. Four freshmen were given certificates in lieu of letters. The Cascade team attended the District Tournament at Canby and won three matches. High School Wrestling provides an opportunity for the “little man” to achieve athletic success as well as larger boys. Amateur wrestling should not be confused with T V wrestling since intercollegiate rules assure maximum protection from injury by forbidding holds which would move body limbs out of their normal range. Wrestler Bill Guest preparing to pin his opponent during a tense moment in a match. 52 Boys in Cascade Physical Education program enjoy out- door recreation designed to promote good health by build- ing bodily strength and endur- ance. Shown here is a group of Mr. King’s sixth period class playing soft ball, a favorite Cascade sport. Supervised Physical Education is required during all four years at Cascade because the administration feels students benefit greatly from the many activities provided. P. E. provides opportunities to acquire skill in a variety of sports, oppor- tunities to develop leadership and fellowship, improved social relation- ships, and a chance to gain a sense of achievement and enjoyment through participation. They learn how to break, bend, drill, form and join all kinds of metal. The use of the acetylene torch for welding and cutting is taught and practiced. Practical automobile mechanics and repair is studied at Cascade as part of the Metal Shop program. Vocation- al metal working provides opportuni- ties for students to learn such much needed skills as farm machinery re- pair and maintenance. The Advanced Typing Class under the supervision of Mrs. Angus practices writing business letters. In addition to teaching correct style and form, Mrs. Angus gives much em- phasis to accuracy in spelling, punctuation, quality, and neatness. Clearness, completeness, and conciseness in all written work are continually stressed. Both Typing I and Typing II are offered at Cascade, the sec- ond year being devoted to advanced work. Admission to the advanced class is based on a high standard of performance during the previous year. Typists Popular events in Mrs. Angus’s classes are parties she in- variably gives when one of her girls marries. The occasion First, It’s Work; Then Play being celebrated here is the marriage of Edith (Williams) Potter. Also married during the current school year was Norma (Hayes) Albee, shown sixth from left. 58 Speech-Dramatics Members of the combination Speech-Dramatics Class preparing to do a radio skit. In addition to intensive work with speech and dramatics for educational purposes each year the class produces a one act play which is presented to the student body. A highly successful project of Mrs. Seim’s third period Eng- lish class was the makeup and layout of a magazine devoted to topics of interest to teen-agers. The students gather ma- terials, do art work, make up advertising, prepare copy and assemble the magazine. 59 Although only first year, or basic art is offered, students may progress according to their interests and abilities to more advanced work. Ample opportunity is provided the student for the satisfaction of creative expression. Cascade’s art course is designed to offer students a wide variety of ex- perience with technique, media, and equipment. The course is based on the fundamentals of design, form, color, line, texture, space, and light. The well equipped library at Cascade is one of the school’s most used educational facil- ities. Here students are given an opportunity to accomplish quiet study or recreational reading. The library contains an unusually good selection of reference materials, fict- ion, magazines, newspapers, and other literary resources.
