Freshman students good-naturedly took their medicine as the sophomores officially initiated them into the Cascade family in October. Costumes were colorful and stunts orderly, and the day ended on a happy note with a soph-fresh-man mixer in the gym. Apparently enjoying their misery are Leroy Spack-man. Gene Runions, Gerald Lewis and Duane Mel-cher. Initiates in the chorus line do their best high kick before the student body assembly. Future Homemakers Entertain District Meeting Always an active organization, the Cascade Future Homemakers of America were especially busy with their duties as host chapter for the annual North Willamette district meeting November 6. Heading the organization was Janet Crane, who had been elected district chairman in 1953. Visitors were impressed by the efficient and constructive meeting. Carnival Activities Varied Janice Wheeler (top left) plays the innocent bystander while Stanley McGill, Jerry Pflug, Sandra Edwards and Wilma Glidewell provide the fisherman's luck at the fish pond, a popular corner. Serving up hot dogs, cake, pie and otter goodies at the refreshment stand were Joyce Gruchow, Alice Graves, Rita Phillips, Pat Campbell and Roberta Campbell. The main attraction was the Bingo game run by Don Papke, Elton Beach, Harold Fry and Bob Vose. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of the Carnival Queen, Freshman Mary Jo Lacey. Standing at left are Princesses Verla Shirley, Ramona Wheeler and Jeanette Townsend. The hard times party November 12 uncovered new creative abilities. Displaying their talents are Janet Crane, John Fry, Bruce Headrick. Pat Ahrens, Roberta Campbell, Warren Goffin, Myra Myers, Norman Harper, Sharon Cork, and Gary Downer. Repeating as girl intramural volleyball champions again this year were Captain Pat Schaefer, Janet Busby, Diane Music, Dorothy Kale, Litta Belle Walker, Lillian Bales, fclene Freeman, Maureen Hemmis, Doris Guest, LaVonne Thompson, and Pat Fowler. Winter No More Homework For Two Days “No More Home Work’’ was only the title of the Senior Class play- a three act comedy which was presented December 9 and 10. Many of the parts were double cast to give more students a chance to perform. Martin Boehme discusses his troubles with acting secretary Mary Scofield, The Villa iness.f Above right). Student Store Does Rushing Business One of the main sources of revenue for the student body is the student store, which sells candy and school supplies. The store is operated by girls from Mrs. Angus’ commercial classes. Dorothy Kale writes out receipts for annual payments from Sandra Zwicker, Bruce Headrick, and Jeannette Townsend. First in line for an after-lunch candy bar are Marion Schollian, Janice Cook, Lenora Pumam and Albert Younger. 35 Musicians Active Throughout Year The music department kept up an active pace throughout the year. In addition to providing music at athletic events, the band joined with the chorus in Christmas and spring evening concerts. The new pep band, organized before basketball season, pleased crowds wherever it appeared. In February, Sharon Cork, Arlan Krenz, and Nat Christensen took part in the Goldman clinic and concert at Salem. Three members of the choir—Pat Ahrens, Keith Christensen and Don Papke—were selected to sing with the All-State Choir in March at Portland. Also in March was the district music contest in which Mr. Bissell’s musicians rated well. Sharon Cork was also chosen to play with the All-Northwest Band at Eugene in April. 36 The newly-formed pep band, which chose the name Cascatrazz Cats , performs at a basketball game with a popular rendition of swing tunes. Mr. Bissell directs the mixed chorus at the annual Christmas concert. First Row: D. Kale, K. Vose, D. Brown, M. Hemmis, L. Walker, M. Papke, A. Graves, R. Phillips, L. Warner, S. Gisler. Charlotte LaRont and Margaret Littau serve refreshments to Marcella Harper, Keith Christensen, Ray and Janet Busby. Holiday Spirit Catches Cascadians The Christmas Ball this year marked the beginning of a tradition. Under the auspices of the Student Council, the decision was made to invite all Cascade alumni and to continue it as an annual homecoming event. This made attendance larger and upperclassmen were glad to see the old familiar faces again as everyone danced the evening away to the music of Stubby Mills in an atmosphere of “Winter Wonderland.” Classes were held right up until Christmas Eve, but that afternoon was marked by homeroom parties and ended with a general assembly and carol-sing. In Spanish class, Sandra Edwards tries an old Mexican custom, breaking the pinata filled with goodies while Lula Reed, Ival Parker, Elsa Dodson, Sandra Ruggles, and Joyce Hof-enbredl wait to pick up las dulces when it breaks. Fighting Basketeers Make Top Record The 1954-55- Cascade Cougars, pulling the biggest upset in the hoop history of Cascade under the leadership of their newly acquired coach. Cal Hersey, beat off enough contenders to win a co-championship of the Capitol League. They tied with Central, winning eight and losing two games. Not letting up, they went on to win the District 11-A2 Tournament, and in winning, they earned the right to meet the South Salem Saxons. Engineering one of the biggest upsets in state prep basketball, they crut down the Saxons in the first contest in the two out of three series. This was not enough, though, as the taller and more confident Saxons captured the next two games for the right to go to the State Basketball Tournament. Leading the team in scoring was Captain Ed Sproul. He was rated by his team-mates as most valuable player to the team and captured a spot on the Capitol League All-Star team. He also won a place on the District 11-A2 Tournament All-Star team and topped this off with honorable mention for All-State. Other seniors on this fighting team were J. D. Lawrence, Don Mickey, Wayne Feller, Harold Schollian, Randy Christensen. The 1954-55 Cascade Cougars, one of the leading teams in the history of Cascade: W. Feller, H. Schollian, G. Speer, J. D. Sproul hits for two of his many points against Silver-ton in District play; Uhrhammer at right. Not to be denied, the Cougars staved off a late Silverton rally to win by a single point. Below, Sproul fires away as Mickey (13) and Lawrence (15) wait for rebound in final game of District Tournament. The Cascades clinched the title by defeating North Marion 55-51. The conquering Cougars give a jubilant cheer for North Marion after capturing the District 11-A2 trophy. First Wrestling Team Competes A new sport introduced at Cascade this year was intercollegiate wrestling. This is a type of wrestling in which no holds are allowed which would move the limbs of the body out of their normal range. The season was fairly successful, considering it was the first-year of the sport at Cascade. Of seven meets, the Stewart-coached grapplers won two and lost five. First Row: E. Foster, D. Dahl, F. Juniors Score Hit With'Caroline' All the boys were excited about Caroline, the new girl in school, and plotted to get a date. First chance went to Bob Smith, but his buddies bet that “You Can’t Kiss Caroline.’’The events leading up to the kiss provided three acts of delightful comedy. Cascade Continues Diamond Mastery The 1954 baseball team, carrying on the tradition of the mighty nines of the past, went through all its Capitol League contests without a defeat and earned the right to play the rugged Banks High team for the district title. Playing like champions, the Cougars edged out the Braves at Waters Park by a 4-2 score. The next week they traveled to Portland for a berth in the State Playoffs and lost a tight game, 2-1. The Cougars ended the season with an overall record of 12 wins and 6 losses. The 1955 team continued the winning pace, winning the only three games permitted by weather before the annual went to press. Cindermen Conclude Year's Sports Program Cascade’s ’55 track team was weaker than usual this year due to the loss of many seniors who formed the power in last year’s team. There were many new prospects out this year, however, that should do well in the future years. Seniors doing especially well in competition this year were Kenneth Martin, a transfer from Salem, running the half mile; Don Mickey, competing in the high jump, javelin and shot put; Harold Fry in the high and low hurdles; John Fry in the pole vault and and shot put, and Basil Carr in the shot put and high jump. 58 Crossing the finish fine far ahead of his opponents is Cascade's 880 man Kenneth Martin. Straining to catch his Sena opponent is high hurdler Harold Fry at the first home meet of the season. Pole vaulter John Fry goes up and over. Basil Carr clears the 5’ 2 mark at the Serra- Cascade meet. 59 The day of GAA initiation saw several weird figures walking the halls. The initiates had to come to school dressed as famous personalities. At right are Linda Scofield, Charlotte LaRont, Sylvia Fry and Ethel Ralphs.
