Isabel Weible, Mrs. Mary Benner and irs. Irene Rose Hough prepare lunch. They Cooked As head cook Mrs. Hough planned all the menus and did all the buying. She had to see that our diet contained the proper amount of fats, and proteins. The cooks had their hands full, feeding approximately 300 of us a day. And before Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays there was a special treat—turkey din- ner with all the trimmings. We couldn’t have gotten along without Ed Ruby, head custodian and Mel Nichol, assistant. They kept the building clean and neat and knew where to find anything we wanted. And Cleaned Red Ruby inspects furnace. Dusting desks and chairs is a part of Nick Nichol's daily work. Office Girls The office girls did general secretarial work for Mrs. Riches, Mr. Uhrhammer, and members of the faculty. First and sixth period office girls had a set rou- tine to follow. First period the girls compiled the absentee list, typed the bulletin and distri- buted these papers to the faculty. Sixth period the girls checked attendance records and did gen- eral office work. Oth.er periods, the girls typed letters and transcripts, kept permanent records and made report cards. Marilyn Pearson helps Mrs. Riches with office work after school. Evelyn Rennies and Eleanor Berhorst count the money for the lunch ticket sale. Mary Lou Kremer is working on the senior handbook. Or Future Farmers of America The first aim of the Future Farmers of America is “to develop competent, aggressive rural and agricultural leadership”. The Cascade chapter actively worked toward this goal by encouraging its members to take part in school and community functions. Recognition was given for the best projects and some were shown at the State Fair. Elton Beach and Dick Gilbert were elected delegates and sent, at chapter ex- pense, to the National Convention in Kansas City in September. These were some of the chapter’s main activities for the year: Sept. 28 Capitol District Leadership Meeting. Nov. 4 Fourth annual Parent and Son Ban- quet, 150 guests present. The Cougars dropped an 18 - 0 decision to Estacada af- ter winning the district title by downing Willamina. This was the best season any Cascade football team has had and will leave an impressive mark for fut- ure teams to shoot for. Playing their last game for Cascade were Gerald Waldrop, Howard Speer, Bill Brown, Wayne Krenz, Bill Husted, Don Kaiser, Harold Mitchell, Richard Beth- ell, Don Wilt, Bob Schaefer, Max Towery, Larry Gower, Bob Williams, Ray Sut- ton, and Dick Gilbert, all senior members of the team. Five starters from this year’s varsity will be back to see more action next year, They are Elton Beach, Irwin Dalke, Bob Vose, John Fry, and Captain-elect Don Mickey. Four Cascade football players garnered seven of the 22 places on the Capitol League All-Star team. Bill Husted, end; Gerald Waldrop, fullback; and Howard Speer, were both offensive and defensive choices; while Wayne Krenz, tackle, was selected for the defensive team. Leading scorers for the Cougars which scored 225 points in 10 games were How- ard Speer, 55 points; Gerald Waldrop, 49 points; Don Mickey, 42. Cascade was undefeated in league play and also downed Willamina in the race for the district title. The season mark was 7 won 2 lost and 1 tie. The losses were an opening defeat by Silverton and the final contest against Estacada. Highlights of the season were the 41-19 win over Central, which gave the Cou- gars the league championship, and a 7-6 victory over a tough Newport team. Coaching basket- ball in his initial year was Lyle King, who came to Cascade from Har- risburg. Mr. King taught a fast break type of basketball that made the most of the team’s speed and hustle. In preseason play the Cougars won five in a row. Individually, the team was well balanced with the regulars sharing scor- ing honors in most of the goals. Bill Brown, captain and leading scorer, won a place on the Capitol League all-star team. Howard Speer and Don Wipper, along with Brown, were the only graduating members of the team. Neal Kinion, Don Mickey, Ed Sproul and Gene Winkle all saw action as starters and will be back for another try next season. Front row: H. Speer, D. Wipper, F. Anderson, J. D. Lawrence, N. Kinion, D. League champions and conquerors of a strong Eugene team, the Cascade nine of 1953 were denied participation in the state finals because of a rainy season.
