Forest area selection assures a perpetual wood supply. With this harvesting method, strips of timber are cut and islands of trees are left unharvested to serve as a source for future raw materials. Education and Timber Take Positions as Area's Most Important Industries Timber and education-these two all important industries of the Longview area are linked together by the word Cascade. The name of this school was derived from the Cascade Mountains. Many years ago this range was identified by Indians as the mountains by the cascading waters. We now refer to them as the Cascades and depend upon them to supply the raw material necessary for Longview's industry. The mountains, east of Longview, are very beautifulin their majestic solitude. In addition to their role of supplying timber, they provide sports enthusiasts with opportunities for skiing, hunting, camping, and hiking. Managing timber cutting and wood processing opera- tions is no small or easy task. In addition to using the most modern techniques 'and equipment, the timber industry still needs man power. In one year the working-force in Cowlitz County collected a payroll which exceeded 56 million dollars for their efforts in the lumber and paper products companies. Scientific timber planting and harvesting are more than protecting the never-ending supply of timber. Douglas Firs are now being planted faster than they are being harvested. This fact, alone, is very important to this country's effort to enforce conservation of our trees. New uses are being found for all parts of the log. There is little of the log that is not used, as new ideas in wood and the growing needs of our time make forests more valuable. The lumber mills of the timber industry are comparable to schools, the learning mills of the education industry. Techniques and equipment must meet with the modern sophistication of today. Longview is very education minded, with facilities ranging from pre-school through an accredited two-year college. In Longview, there are eight elementary schools, two junior and two senior high schools. These already established facilities have been expanded by adding rooms and updating the curriculum. Secondary programs are designed to prepare students for future life. Students may select subjects which will enable them to prepare for college. Those who wish may elect to take classes which give instruction in subjects which will help gain employment upon completion of high school.
