'tl ffl' sifksv .u' '.g r ' si! Forest area selection assures a perpetual wood supply. With this harvesting method, strips of timber are cut and islands of trees are left unharvested to serve as a source for future raw materials. Education and Timber Take Positions as Area's Most Important Industries Timber and education-these two all important industries of the Longview area are linked together by the word Cascade. The name of this school was derived from the Cascade Mountains. Many years ago this range was identified by Indians as the mountains by the cascading waters. We now refer to them as the Cascades and depend upon them to supply the raw material necessary for Longview's industry. The mountains, east of Longview, are very beautifulin their majestic solitude. In addition to their role of supplying timber, they provide sports enthusiasts with opportunities for skiing, hunting, camping, and hiking. Managing timber cutting and wood processing opera- tions is no small or easy task. In addition to using the most modern techniques 'and equipment, the timber industry still needs man power. In one year the working-force in Cowlitz County collected a payroll which exceeded 56 million dollars for their efforts in the lumber and paper products companies. Scientific timber planting and harvesting are more than protecting the never-ending supply of timber. Douglas Firs are now being planted faster than they are being harvested. This fact, alone, is very important to this country's effort to enforce conservation of our trees. New uses are being found for all parts of the log. There is little of the log that is not used, as new ideas in wood and the growing needs of our time make forests more valuable. The lumber mills of the timber industry are comparable to schools, the learning mills of the education industry. Techniques and equipment must meet with the modern sophistication of today. Longview is very education minded, with facilities ranging from pre-school through an accredited two-year college. In Longview, there are eight elementary schools, two junior and two senior high schools. These already established facilities have been expanded by adding rooms and updating the curriculum. Secondary programs are designed to prepare students for future life. Students may select subjects which will enable them to prepare for college. Those who wish may elect to take classes which give instruction in subjects which will help gain employment upon completion of high school. ..- The final bell has sounded and students disperse to lockers and busses. Registration signifies the end of summer and the beginning ofa new school year The bite ofa logger's saw slices a wedge from the bottom ofa tree to direct its fall. 3 ,ssh Si -yt h x X Awaiting trucks receive logs which are lifted into place by a cable attached to a portable steel tower. fl- Ll. Conveyonces Furnish Transportation: Students to School, Logs to the Mill A very large number of students who attend Cascade ride a bus to and from school. Busses loading and unloading students is an ordinary, everyday occurrence. At times the procedure of unloading a bus is a bit hectic. The scene is always one of push- ing and shoving as students hurry to get to lockers and to classes. Students crowd the covered walkway after school as they board awaiting busses. 5 Like the students, the logs too must be loaded onto vehicles. The selected logs are first loaded onto trucks or train cars by a cable apparatus. With careful managing the large, heavy trucks can transport a good-sized load without any trouble. The logs are then taken to their destination, which is most often a mill site. Here the logs are unloaded with a fork lift and dropped into a sorting pond. In both of these industries-education and timber-the material is being transported to a mill where mental or structural processing takes place. Getting students or logs to where the processing is to be done is a very important part of the business. Raw timber is processed into raw lumber before it can be made into various wood products. In the same way, junior and senior high schools must ready young people for higher education or job training. Education is an industry which takes quite a few years to produce a final product while the timber industry is able to manufacture its product in a relatively short period of time. The first step in both industries is the transportation of raw materials. Mill Curves Raw Timber Into Lumberp School Activities The operation of making raw products continues soon after the logs have been taken to a mill. The timber is made into rough lumber or wood pulp. These rough products are usually processed into various lumber creations or paper. Lumber is the primary source for all building, making it invaluable because of its many uses. The rough wood can be shaped into different forms, such as ceiling beams and arches, or can be drawn from layers of wood veneer into plywood. Wood can be formed into many shapes which serve many needs. Through constant research new uses of wood are devised and then materialize with the aid of modern machinery and skill. In comparison, educators strive to teach students at school the necessary fundamentals that they will later Develop Students need. However, the job of education is a difficult one with new problems confronting teachers each day. Methods of instructing students have to be wide in variety so that the class's attention can be caught and held. An interested class listens to what is being said and taught. There is a variety of subjects from which a student can choose while in secondary school. Courses that prepare for college or instruct job skills are available. Young people planning to enter college or begin a job should take advantage of these. Teachers aren't intended to be drillmasters simply lecturing the ancient facts of yesteryear. On the contrary, preparing young people for tomorrow's problems and needs is the number one concern of today's education industry. Never-Ending Cycle Stecudily Produces ssembly Line of Finished Products This generation of trees has found its place in every field imaginable-in thousands of forms and sizes. It is a forerunner of industries. Wherever heavily timbered areas occur, the ever increasing demand for wood products makes it necessary for an increase in the production yield. Because timber is so valuable to today's needs, the source of this industry must be carefully safeguarded. Looking back, there seems to be five major phases to the cycle. The tree was first let to mature. When found to be select and free from disease it was harvested and transported to a mill. It was changed into board lumber. Finally a finished product was created. This cycle starts once again with the planting of new seedlings. The industry strives to plant more new trees than it harvests to insure a continuous source of raw materials to meet the increasing demands for wood products. The process of education works in much the same way as the processing of timber. Trees must mature before they can be harvested for further use. just like trees, students need to mature through education if they are to meet the specifications required by industry. Current events and issues are as much a part of the curriculum as the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic. One's education is not limited to that which is found in the classroom. He is constantly surrounded by infor- mation coming from television, newspapers and maga- zines. Experience in meeting the changes made necessary by an ever changing society have led the administration of the schools to constantly keep formulating programs which will meet tomorrow's needs. The cycle which faces the education industry is one of change as industry and society make new demands upon what a person should know. Undreamed of shapes and forms of wood are being produced as a result of today's modern methods of wood processing. Arches, beams and trusses are able to bear tremendous loads in complete safety without supporting posts. The Mount St. Helens area is the site for aerial reforestation. The new helicopter seeding method is used throughout the Northwest as a part of forest management programs. Schools offer many student oriented activi- ties that take in a variety of interests. Social clubs and programs with a more serious purpose in mind have been established to enable students to take an active part in their school and have fun while participating. In fields of industry and sports competition there is always room for improvement. The numerous problems of the timber industry can be solved and improved upon with careful thought aided by new techniques. This approach is taken in sports where players and coaches work to improve weak points. With constant practicing, aided by team- work, a team can readily use its experience to good advantage. The competitive spirit brings out the best when applied to both industry and teams. Freshmen Bottle to Second Place The frosh team, with some ,big midseason wins, ended the football season with a 4-2 record, good enough for second place in the Cowlitz Valley League. Monticello again caused the Cavalier's downfall. Cascade was stunned in its first outing against the Monticello Mustangs 20-0. The Cavaliers outplayed their cross-town rivals in the first quarter, but stumbled during the final three periods. The freshmen started their winning ways by defeating Chehalis 15-0, Huntington 19-O and Castle Rock 28-13. Randy Lemiere, Paul Orth, Larry Rapp, Gary Patton and Arne Wayrynen reached paydirt in those games. Jim Pollock, John Mason and Stuart Smith were standouts on defense. Two heartbreaking losses were suffered at the hands of Monticello and Coweeman, both by a mere two points. In the season opener, Cascade fell before Huntington 12-0. Many bad breaks plagued the Cavahals. One touchdown was called back on a penalty and Huntington scored one of its touchdowns when Cascade had only nine men on the field. The only win of the year for the Cavaliers was a 13-6 victory over Castle Rock. Chuck Rich and Ron Petersen each scored for Cascade. Rocky Sweet set up one score with an interception. Monticello squeezed by Cascade 20-18 in their next outing. Chuck Rich tallied all three touchdowns. Extra points killed the Cavaliers as all three were missed. In the final game Cascade fell before Huntington 18-16. The Cavaliers were leading by four points with seconds remaining, but a Coweeman pass found the mark after being tipped by a Cascade defender. Six eighth grade team members won post season awards. jim Pierson and Tony Hart came out on top in the offensive and defensive line awards. Seventh Graders Learn Basic Skills Intra-squad games and a meeting with the eighth grade team took the place of the annual two games with Monticello this year. During the practices the players learned the fundamentals of the game such as blocking, passing, tackling, and receiving. Because of the had field conditions, the young Cavaliers held practice sessions on the playground opposite Columbia Heights Ele- mentary School and on the field adjacent to the lower parking lot. The second-string eighth grade team defeated the first year players 13-6. Joe Opsahl scored the only touchdown for the seventh grade. The game was played on the new Mark Morris field. Ninth Grade Cagers Head Toward Cascade's First Undefeated Season The Cascade ninth grade basketball squad was the highlight of the Cavalier sports season. The freshmen were looking toward Cascade's first undefeated season in any sport. The squad held a 11-0 record with only one game left to play as the yearbook went to press. The Cavaliers started off their winning ways by defeating the Castle Rock Rockets, 50-405 Cathlamet, 45-329 and Huntington, 44-37. The squad pulled off a fantastic defensive performance by whipping the Monticello Mustangs, 42-29. Another highlight of the season was the winning of the Cava.lier's one hundredth game. A strong second half gave the squad a 45-38 victory over a tough Coweeman Cougar team. A week later it slammed the same team, 47-36. With the help of Larry Hahka's school record of making 12 out of 12 free throws, the Cavaliers defeated Cathlamet by a score of 54-30. The next time out, the Cavaliers trounced Huntington, 45-28. Hahka again led Cascade with 13 points. The freshmen came through with their eleventh straight win by smashing Chehalis, 64-12. They started off with a strong showing by defeating the Castle Rock Pirates 39-21. A bright moment in the game was Jeff Su.ndberg's 20 points. Even though the Cavaliers suffered let downs in the Cathlamet and Huntington games, they came back with a good second half defense to rope the Monticello Mustangs. The squad held the Mustangs to 2 points in the second half to win with a score of 24-20. A strong rally by Cascade fell short in the closing seconds as Castle Rock nudged the Cavaliers 23-22. Revenge was gained the following week when the Cougars in Losing Season were slain 32-26. The Cavaliers ran into strong Cathlamet rivals. Although Sundberg hit 15 points, the Cascade squad met defeat, 26-21. The next week Huntington topped the Cavaliers 35-27, even after a last quarter rally in which the Cavaliers made a valient effort to the last minute. In their next outing the Cavalier eighth grade team edged Chehalis by a 36-33 margin in an overtime game. Barry Myers was the key man for Cascade as he scored 14 points.
