Advisor Dale Sprout not only feels that this is a class, but it is also a job because you must do your part in order for everything to run smoothly. Along with the eleven that signed up in August, there was an addition to the group. Darcy Marxer joined the staff in March to make the record an even twelve. With two year veteran Matt O’Hara and with five new Sen- iors, five Juniors, and one Sopho- more this staff attacked issues in the editorials such as the water problems, Steroids, and Satan- ism. Even though some of the edi- torials took SOME heat, the pa- per still went out. Through the hours of anxiety and stress, the annual made it to the printing press. Above right: Sen- ior Thane Brandt. Along with Senior Erin Nelson as Secre- tary and Junior Todd Mortag as Treasurer, this student body council worked hard to make stu- dent life around the halls of C.H.S. easier for everyone. The Freshmen were represent- ed by Heather Flechsenhar. Ryan Kyler stood in for the Soph- omore class. The Juniors sent Scott Smith into the ranks to speak their mind, and the Seniors sent Shelley Drummond and Corry Juedeman as representa- tives for the Class of 1989. With Principal Jim Donovan as advi- sor, this council achieved many of their goals and worked hard to better things at C.H.S. On the ladder. Top to bottom. The FFA caped off a great year in 1989. The high point of the year came with the state FFA convention held in Great Falls on April 6,7, and 8. The local chapter hailed down their fourth con- secutive sweepstakes award and running their string of the last twelve. The chapter won awards in almost every area. Cascade placed first in both crops and live- stock, while they took second in agricultural mechanics and third in farm business. The team was led by seniors Scott McKay and Cara Squires. Scott placed third individually in livestock and second in the overall sweep- stakes, while Cara placed first in agronomy. Other team members in- cluded Jessie Strobbe, Ken Grismer, and Mark McKamey. Randy Bog- den also had a success- ful weekend receiving the states highest award, the Star State Agribusinessman. Along with this award Randy was elected as the 1988-89 State FFA Par- liamentarian. Organizations 41 In June of 1989, 3 boys and 1 girl from Cascade High partici- pated in Boy’s and Girl’s State. Jessie Strobbe trav- eled to Helena for Girl's State. Last summer, JoElla Carter and Jodi Baker attended a cheerleading camp in Bozeman Mon- tana. They won a superi- or award in the cheer- leading competition, and as a result, the Cascade High School varsity cheerleaders were invit- ed to perform at the Aloha Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii. The eight cheer- leaders spent five beau- tiful days on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. They spent many hours prac- ticing in the hot sun to make their routine pre- sentable at half-time of the Aloha Bowl game. Of course this trip was not all work and no play, there were also tours of Pearl Harbor, snorkeling, and shopping. The cheerleaders per- formed their routine on Christmas day, and boarded the plane homeward bound on the next day. I am sure this is an experience these girls will never forget. The first game was played on a hot Sat. afternoon in Boulder. The game was lost to the Panthers, 25-0. From then on, the Badgers went on a four game losing streak, losing to CMR Soph., Simms, Choteau, and Harlem. Things changed though on Oct. 8 as Fairfield invaded Bad- ger country. The Badgers played an outstanding game as they shut out the Eagles, 19-0. Unfortunately, this was the Badgers last victory as they lost the last two games to GFH Soph., and Fort Benton. Even though the team’s record was 10-7, the team had several players selected all conference. Shane Lord was selected as 1st team punter. Scott McKay was also chosen as 2nd team offen- sive tackle. Derrick Lathrop was honored as 2nd team linebacker and offensive tackle. John Beck- man was named to the 2nd team as running back. And Mike Gol- laher was named honorable men- tion defensive end. Along with all conference hon- ors, team awards were given. Todd Mortag and Mike Gollaher both received the Most Improved Award. Aaron Schulte received the Golden Helmet Award (def.). Scott Mckay was chosen Most Inspirational and Derrick Lathrop was named the MVP. Left to Right: Front Row: R. Palmer, T. Brandt, J. Beckman, A. Schulte, A. Lindow, T. Standley, B. Cope, G. Schneider. KSEN, “You are seeing the most exciting games of the tournament!” Telling about the Cascade High School girls team against teams of Malta, Fort Benton, and Choteau. For the second year the Divisional tournament was held in Cut Bank. This is the first year of not having a District tournament in Class “B”. In the first game Cascade played the Malta M-Ettes. This game was close through out but 6 seconds left in the game, with the score 41to41, Malta threw a full court pass to make an easy 2 pts. This was the final shot of the game, which won it for the M-Ettes. The second game between the Fort Benton Longhorns the Bad- gers was close again. Fort Benton did take a 14pt. 3rd quarter lead but the Badgers fought back early in the 4th quarter to end up winning 48-45. Cascade then played Choteau. As a very tired but excited team they walked on the floor with much confi- dence. Hurt with foul trouble Cas- cade could not get much offense go- ing and lost a hard fought game 37- 41. We had a tough season mentally physically. Overall I was pleased with the teams’ morale commradity. I felt they ended the season playing like champions! And they played their best ball at the tournament.” Stated by Ms. Farmer. 1988 awards were as follows: MVP’s Erin Nelson Cheri Barn- horst, Best Defense-Wynde Cheek, Most Inspirational- Carmen Cald- well. Badgers Athletics 55 CROSS COUNTRY Harriers 4th at State The 1988 Cross Country sea- son started out well with several strong runners, but due to injury only six competed at the state meet, which was held in Helena on October 22. The team placed fourth with two runners, Carmen Caldwell and Jamie Fultz, receiv- ing medals. The team consisted of two seniors, three juniors, one soph- omore, and one freshmen. The girls had a good season placing, 1st at one meet, 2nd at two, and a strong 4th place finish at state, behind Valier, Boulder, and Loyola. Carmen Caldwell and Jamie Fultz, who placed at state also competed at the 1st annual Meet of Champions, which was held on the Anaconda Golf Course in great Falls. Carmen placed 13th and Jamie placed 21st. ACTUALLY WE RAN BETTER THAN LAST YEAR, BUT THE COMPETITION WAS ALSO BET- TER. The Badgers took ten people to state, the most that has ever gone since coach Dale Sprout has taken over the wrestling pro- gram. Of these ten, only two placed. But in order to go to state, a wrestler must place in the top four at the divi- sional meet. The Badgers, as a team, placed third. Those who placed were Jason Adams, second; Scott Hawn, first; Tom Marzolf, second; Denny LeVe- que, first; Leon Murphy, Fourth; Craig Marquis, fourth; Dusty La- fromboise, fourth; Derrick Lathrop, second; Shad Palmer, third; Jeff Campbell, fourth. All of these wres- tlers continued on to the Montana State Wrestling Tournament. Scott Hawn and Derrick Lathrop, placed fifth and sixth respectively at the state tournament. As a team, the Badgers placed 15th out of 35 teams. This year’s seniors, Pat Ober, Leon Murphy, Craig Marquis, Dusty LaFromboise, Derrick Lathrop, and Jeff Campbell, will be greatly missed. The team was green this year. Scott McKay, Honorable Mention All Conference, was the only sen- ior and Todd Mortag was the only other player with any real varsity experience. Cascade ended its season at 5-16, but that record could easily been much better. The Badgers lost 5 games by less than 5 points. The team went to Divisionals at Shelby and met up with the Cut Bank Wolves, who won the Divi- sion and placed 2nd at State. Cascade played a great 1st half and was only down 2 at the end of the half. The Wolves came out fired up in the 2nd half, though, and were just to much for Cascade. The teams next opponent was Chou- teau. The Badgers were in con- trol of the game from the start and won the game 53-37. So onto the quarterfinals they went to play Ft. Benton. The Longhorns opened up a big lead at the start of the game, and the Badgers could not recover. Ft. Benton won 49-81. The J.V. team did very well. They had a 8 game win streak and end- ed with a winning record. The future looks bright for the Badgers. The team is losing only 1 senior, and has 7 players re- turning with a lot of varsity play- ing time. Jason looks for the ball.
