They started out the year with a big win over first ranked Belt Huskies at Cascade. They did not end the season with a winning record but they did better than their record showed. They also had a big upset over the Fort Benton Longhorns at Fort Benton. The girls didn’t lose too many games by very much but just had a hard time getting those final baskets to fall their way. The girls were not overly tall but still managed to play with the best of the teams. They went into the tournament in the lower part of the conference and played two of the best teams that they had to play and again fell short just a little bit. The agony of de-feet Sue Devich receives one of her awards from Coach Barnhorst at the Fall Sports Banquet and was awarded second team all-conference. Jori Nelson goes for the bucket during last week of season. Wynde Cheek, Carmen Caldwell, Zoe Milner, and Dena Ewing followed Lara with between 67 and 72 points each. Dena Ewing lead the team in free throws having 10 out of 14 against Helena High. The girls ended the season with a losing record but at times played very well. H D O u CO CO o U CO g 3 Coach Cheek gives last minute instructions to state cross country competitors. I Carmen Caldwell relaxes after receiving her medal. 58 Cindy Lathrop increases her position at state. The 1986 Cross Country season was one of many changes. This was the first season Boy's Cross Country wasn’t offered. It was cut from the athletic program to comply with a law stating that there will be equality in boy's and girl’s sports. This law also caused the distance to be changed from two miles to three miles. This change didn’t effect the girls too much, with an impressive season to show for it. 59 Monika McKamey Penny Fraser, Jodi Windecker, Vicki Ober, Julie Anderson Sharlene Zahara, Penny Eller, Corry Juedeman 60 Tasha Curnow, Lori Ewing, Christine Lemire, Penny Eller Jodi Bunker, Sharlene Zahara. After graduating four sen- iors the year before the Badgers had to start over. The team, although not having a great season, had great support from the Cascade public. They did not make it past the divi- sional tournament but seemed to be playing their best in the final couple of games. We never reached our top performance due to the season ending so quickly, said Coach Barnhorst. Scott McKay grabs the rebound. Loyal fans of the Cascade Badgers. 62 Top Row-Jeff Mortag, Scott McKay, Craig Moore, Steff Devich, Blake Martinez, Rich Shubert, David Groux, Chuck Crabtree, Coach Barnhorst Middle Row- Mark Salois, Pete Woody, Chris Ames Bottom Row- Lori Ewing, Penny Eller, Tasha Curnow, Christine Lemire This year the Junior Varsity team did very well. The team was led by Sophomore Mark Salois and Scott McKay, and Junior Jim Paul. The Junior Varsity Team will lend a great hand to next years varsity team. They won many of their games, beating many very talented teams. 63 Top Row- Coach Peterson. Darren Lord, Casey Cabrin, Mark Salois, Rob Duerr. Chris Ames and Pete Woody receive instructions. 64 Members of the drill team on the march. Adviser Wendy McKamey said drill team was a success this year because the girls worked hard and put in hundreds of hours of practice and performance time. Each girl paid for all of the equipment they used including uniforms, shoes and baton. They also chose all the music and did the choreography of all the routines with the exception of the routine done to the 'Eye of the Tiger.” Co-captain Lori Ewing Said, I hope the people that make the squad next year have as much fun as we did this year. A fantastic finish! Front row: Monika McKamey. Corry Ju deman. Shelley Drummond, Jodi Bunker. Back row: Christine Lemire, Sharlene Zahara, Lori Ewing. Tasha Curnow, Penny Eller. Jesse Stobbc, Mrs. Wendy McKamey. Adviser. 65 VOLLEYBALL Under the new leadership of Coach Sam Scott, the Badger Spikers completed their second season. Coach Scott implemented a new aggressive style of play. In Coach Scott's opinion, the girls started at a low skill level, but they steadily improved throughout the season. She also said the girls seemed to enjoy what they are doing. The Badgers competed at Divisionals this year, but were knocked out after two games. There were six varsity lettermen, and three received special awards. Cheri Barnhorst was named Best Server, while Laura Paul was Defensive Player, and Zoe Milner was Most Improved. Coach Brooke Donovan led the Junior Varsity Spik- ers through another season. 66 Baclc-Tricia Brugg, Dena Ewing, Alicia Kountz, Lara Paul. Wendy Cheek, Sue Devich, Coach Sam Scott.
