Reno, what are you doing on your back? greasers Mans best friend Live 17 Football The Cascade Football Team had an exciting but long 1984 season. The lack of size and experience created a hardship for the young team. We were blessed with excellent skill positions but our small offensive and defensive lines were no match for most of the teams in our league. All-Conference included Brian Boynton 1st team wide receiver. Honorable mention included: Offensive players Mark Rose (QB) and Darren Newman (Running Back), Defensively Dave Taft at Defensive End. The Cascade Boys had a very successful '85 Cross Country Season. The Badgers climaxed a nine meet season with a third place trophy on a very cold snowy day in Butte at the State Meet. Eight out of thirteen Badgers ran fast enough for a school letter, six ran fast enough to place on our top ten All-Time list, and Cyros Strickland also ran fast enough to win the 12th place medal at our state meet. Results were as follows: Cyros Strickland-16:29, Letterman, 12th at State, First on Top Ten Board, Top Junior Performance, Most Valuable Harrier: Darren Newman-16:49, Letterman, 16th at State, Third on Top Ten Board: Jeff McLaugh- lin-16:52, Letterman, 24th at State, Fourth on Top Ten Board; Tim Johnson-17:02, Letterman, 37th at State, Fourth at State, Sixth on Top Ten Board; Rob Martinez-17:09, Letterman, 31st at State, Seventh on Top Ten Board; Mike Windecker-17:54, Letterman, State Team, Tenth on Top Ten Board; Ed Zook-18:14, Letterman, State Team; Jim Nicholls-18:43, Letterman, State Team. Other team members include: Brian Boynton, Jamie Snyder, Waldo MacDonald, Bill Barrett, and Shawn Lashway. 24 Back: Tina Essebaggers, Mr. Cheek, Cynde Cheek, Front: Angie Wojtala, Sabrina Rhoades, Julie Anderson, Sherri Beckman. The six Girl Harriers had a very successful season in 1984. Their Fifth place finish at State is the best performance at State since 1979. This was a building year at Cascade with five of the six girls competing in Cross Country for the first time. Even though we had no state medalists, our girls pulled together at state and competed very successfully as a team. Results were as follows: Sabrina Rhoades-13:46, Letterman, 26th at State; Sherri Beckman-14:21, Letterman, 27th at State; Julie Anderson-14:22, Letterman, 41st at State; Angie Wojtala-15:07, Letterman, 37th at State; Cynde Cheek-15:1 1, Letterman, 47th at State; Tina Essebaggers-15:12, State Team Alternate. Girls Varsity Basketball Back Coach Klinker, Jodi Enger, Vicky Ober, Kersten Lersbak, Sue Devich, Shawnda Zahara, Pam Dugas, Coach Barnhorst; Front: Jori Nelson, Gabby Pelensky, Traci Collins. The girls basketball team completed their season with a record of 2-18 overall and 0-12 in conference. The girls showed great improvement throughout the season. The season was hampered by injuries to Sue Devich with a broken foot for six weeks and to Pam Dugas with a broken hand for six weeks. The basketball team is anxious for next season with most of the team returning. However, the Badgers will miss two seniors in Kersten Lersbak and Jodi Enger. 26 Girls JV Basketball Coach Klinker, Jodi Windecker, Becki Ames, Cindy Lathrop, Cindy Thompson, Alicia Kountz, Christine Lemire, Penny Eller. The Junior Varsity was in a building year and thus won none of their games. They showed a tremendous amount of improvement from the beginning to the end of the season. They also developed a positive attitude, which enhanced the spirit of the team as a whole. The biggest asset this had was that they didn't give up. This makes us think that with more experience and practice they will be very competitive in the future. 27 Cheerleaders Varsity boys basketball, football cheerleaders, top Traci Collins, left to right Kersten Lersbak, Pam Dugas, Cynde Cheek, mascot Cheralynn Malady 30 Cheerleaders Cheerleaders 31 Drill Team Drill Team top to bottom, Crystal Parrish, Penny Fraser, Mary McBride, Kim Nicholls, Cindy Thompson, Penny Eller, Becky Voss, Karen Huber, Nadine Ellis 32 Cheerleaders Basketball Varsity: back row (I to r)- Travis Peterson (mgr.), Brian Boynton, Tom Doty, Tim Johnson, Cyros Strickland, Mark Rose, Tom Dorle, Jamie Snyder, John Barnhorst, Coach Barnhorst. Cheer- leaders: Cynde Cheek, Kersten Lersbak, Cheralynn Malady, Traci Collins, Pam Dugas. The Cascade boys' basketball team completed a fine season with a record of 15-9 and 10-2 in conference play, for 2nd place. The boys showed improvement throughout the season, especial- ly in defense. The season was completed without any serious injury. However, sickness and injury did hurt the Badgers at Divisionals. The Badgers will be looking forward to next season, with four lettermen returning. But the Badgers will miss the fine of Brian Boynton, Tom Dorle, Tom Doty, and Jamie Snyder. 34 35 Coach Peterson, Brooke MacGillivary, Jeff Mortag, Pete Woody, Craig Moore, Steff Devich, Blake Martinez, Mike Lersbak, Rich Schubert, Jim Paul, Chuck Crabtree, Chris Ames, Travis Peterson (mgr.). When one looks at a season retrospectively it is often difficult to find a focal point. The tournaments and matches tend to mold together. This season is no different, but there are several things that do stand out. The total improvement of the Cascade's fine young athletes has to be a point to reflect upon. The Badger's became a strong team, not just individuals with potential. The late season victory at Stanford illustrated this. The pleasant aspect of this is the fact that the nucleus of the team is returning. At this time, many question the value and reason for competition. Too much is learned from athletics to ever question its importance As it was once stated, The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred with dust sweat and blood. Who at best knows the devotion, the great enthusiasm of a champion and at worst the bitterness of defeat so his name shall never be among those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. 38 Wrestling Wrestling 39 Wrestling '85 40 42 43 PROM King and Queen Candidates: Soph., Chuck Angie; Seniors, Kim Ross; Juniors, Tim Chris; Fresh., Tina Steff.
