LOOKING FORWARD The year is 1984. I have been hired to find the members of the Class of '65 and what they are doing. Sam Sommers, author of HOW TO MAKE A MILLION WITHOUT LIFTING A FINGER is writing another book and wants to use some of his classmates' techniques for making money. The head of the FBI, Slick” Setzer is helping me. Slick discovered his interest in detective work while rehearsing for a play in his junior year in high school. We decided a visit to the fifty-first state, Mars, might be in order. We contacted John See for tickets to Mars. John is Commander of Operation Marspass. He has quite a lucrative business ferrying tourists between Mars and Earth. After phoning for reservations at the plush Mars Inn, we learned it was owned by none other than Bob Siebel. While driving around Mars, I remarked to Slick on the Greek atmosphere the olive groves and fig trees gave. We saw a worker pruning one of the trees so we stopped to talk. Im- agine our surprise to recognize Connie Flechsenhar, the first space traveler to land on Mars. She ex- plained that her reward was this large tract of land upon which she was raising olives, figs and little Greeks. We bade Connie goodby and returned to Earth. We arrived in time for a show at Madison Square Garden. President Kerry Obrecht and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Colleen Hetherton were there. The way Kerry used to argue in school, everyone knew he'd be a politician. Colleen speaks thirty-seven languages. She got her start with four years of French in high school. The first act is the world famous husband and wife high-wire team, the Dazzlers. Why it's Jim Benner and the former Vicky Halverson! The cool steady nerve Jim and Vic showed in high school sports is needed in this exhibition. Next on the program is the inventor of the thinking robot, Melvin Venetz. Melvin perfected the robot until it is almost human. To give it commands, just think of the com- mand, all the robots are equipped with ESP. Here's a well known voice, the Voice of Music, Carol Ann Belisle, Carol has had several hits, and has received three golden records, for record sales numbering over a million. A couple of cartoonists are scheduled next. Betty Goss, a protegee of A1 Capp's, has taken up where he left off so Li I Abner will continue getting in and out of scrapes. Kenny Ferguson has taken over the editing of MAD. He's now Alfred E. Neuman's right hand man. Here is the famous midget basket- ball team and their coach, Don Lee Murrill. They have been in the news recently because of their unex- pected victory over the Harlem Globetrotters, 81-35. Hear those golden notes! That has to be the new out space group of three young men. One is an alumnus of Cascade High School, Bill Terry. After graduating Bill grew a beard and formed his group known as Peter, Paul, and Terry. To finish the Madison Square Garden show with a touch of Old West, is Peggy Fraser and her Wild West show. After winning Rodeo Queen of the World, she formed a show and is touring the world. Slick and I caught a jet for Cascade to see what the old town was like and to see if we could find some of the Class of '65 there. A group of oil derricks were the first things we saw. These were owned by Walter Wilson. He was driving his pickup one day and when he dug out at a stop sign, he struck oil! Doug Kirk owns a ranch near here. He is experimenting with various breeds of cattle, trying to find a breed that will thrive on Martian vegetation. Calvin Duerr also has a ranch near Cascade, in fact he owns Cas- cade! He raises purebred Herefords and thoroughbreds. Calvin has raised four Kentucky Derby winners in the last ten years. A sports report shows the whereabouts of several members of the class. Danny Lashway is a race car driver. He has won first at Indianapolis for the last five years. Cathy Maxwell was a sprinter for the U. S. Olympic team. She won four gold medals before her retirement. After his graduation Bob Manning took up boxing. He won the Golden Gloves and is now the Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. Also in the news is the appointment of Glenn Wade as conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Glenn showed interest in conducting while in band in high school. Pauline Hocevar, an ultra modern fashion de- signer, unveiled her controversial sleeveless dress today. After the extreme lack of clothing during the Sexy Sixties, the fashion went to ankle length skirts, long sleeved blouses and turtleneck sweaters. We motored to Reno which is part of the Gambling Paradise owned by Paul Hocevar and Larry Caldwell. They also own Los Vegas and Tiajuana. They won them in a dice game. Barbara Moody is head blackjack dealer at the largest gambling hail in Reno. Bonnie O’Neill is quite a regular visitor. She is trying to figure a way to beat the odds and break the bank. We ran into that well known movie star, Cathie Cox, waiting for a divorce from her fifteenth husband. I asked her what the reason was this time and she replied, Dahling, one must spread one’s fabulous company around to give the poor men a chance for happiness! After rounding up the information on all these characters, I went to find Sam to collect my fee. There was no sign of him--not only does he know how to make money, he knows how to keep it! Slick and I set off to find him........ 21
