CLASS HISTORY In September, 1957, the good ship ”1961 Bound began a long and treacherous 4-year jour- ney over the ocean of teachers and homework to Port Graduation. Our 8th grade crew signed on ship's mates Ted Rieke, Suzan Lahti, Wanda Cloninger, Jim Adams and Janet Lane from Wolf Creek and Mate Douglas Standley from Travis, Our complete crew of 27, with Jerry Hocevar Ship's Officer; Ted Rieke, 1st Mate; Lois Stillar, 2nd Mate; Jim Adams, Cabin Boy, at the helm set out with our Captain, Joseph Lashway, to conquer the mighty seas. After about 2 weeks at sea, we were set upon by Sophomore pirates and initiated as sailors full fledged. To show that we were grateful??? we held a dance for them aboard ship a week later. After we were 6 months out of port Susie LaFromboise, Betty Riggs and Scotty Rogers were found drifting on a derelict hulk and were taken aboard. Lost at sea about the same time was Janet Lane. We were an ac- tive ship, having a lot of shindigs all year long. We weren't becalmed either as we ended the first year of our journey with about $60.00 in the hold. About a year later, mutiny broke out and Donald Kessler took over as Captain with Dave Baker, Gary Briner, Judy Hogan and J. D. Wallace being shanghied as additional crew members. At the helm this time were Jerry Hocevar, Ship’s Officer; Dave Baker, 1st Mate; Suzan Lahti, 2nd Mate; and Karen Halverson, Cabin Boy, commanding a motley crew of 34 mates. We spied the ship ”1962 Bound and boarded and initiated them just as we had been and they purchased their release by paying a ransom, a dance in our honor. In the course of the next year of our journey, we tried forms of piracy new to us, such as floats on Ketochi Day, raffles, dances and others to try to bolster the booty, and succeeded in accumulating $165. 00 in the hold. We were helped by a stowaway named Lou Ann Richter, who revealed her presence aboard about halfway across. J. D. Wallace, Judy Hogan and Gary Briner escaped en route. We ended the second year happily as victors in volleyball on the high seas. When we embarked on our 3rd year of the voyage, Donald Kessler had at the helm; Scotty Rogers, Ship's Officer; Nate Mannakee, First Mate; Suzan Lahti, Second Mate, and Ted Rieke, Cabin Boy, managing a crew of 30 mates. We had lost Gary Briner and Lou Ann Richter, but had recaptured J. D. Wallace. Not too long out to sea Betty Riggs and J. D. Wallace jumped ship and Lou Ann Richter was again found stowing away. During the course of the voyage we presented a play, Great Caesar's Ghost, ’’ on Friday the 13th, and it was termed a huge success. On board we held one of the most beautiful shoe shuffles ever, named Oriental Gardens but went into the hold because the cost of the elaborate decorations combined with a bad storm ruined any chances for bounty. Raffles brought us back to an even keel and we ended our 3rd year with $280. 00 in the strongbox and each of us with a class ring. Our ship, weary from use, covered with barnacles, creaking from old-age, yet fairly sea- worthy, set sail with Mr. Kessler still quelling all mutinies. Up for promotions were Ted Rieke, Ship’s Officer; Cliff Buck, First Mate; Suzan Lahti, Second Mate; and Bud Lee, Cabin Boy, to lead us through the final passage to Port Graduation. Lost overboard were Lou Ann Richter, Bar- bara Murphy and Janet Nahrgang but we impressed Bill Nicholson and Colleen Stumper. Nearly halfway across the final stretch we held our Christmas Celebration, named White Christmas, ” and it will long be a treasured memory. We participated in some activities, though not as many as before, because the school was trying to do away with piracy by sponsoring an all-school car- nival. We spent a good deal of time putting out the 1961 Ketochi, which we hope will bring back fond memories to all for many years to come. Our ship captured the port of Chico Hot Springs and held it for 3 days until we were driven away by our lack of funds and by superior forces. We held, on board, a crew night at which mates from all 4 ships at sea were presented with honor for activities in organizations and for seamanship outstanding. With that, the school, which had captured and sentenced us for piracy on the seas, gave us each our treasured pardons on May 23rd, 1961. Our ship, the 1961 Bound. will never sail again on the seas, and many of the mates will never meet again, but that ship and its crew will be remembered a long time in the annuals of Cascade High School.
