DEDICATION George B. Palmer To have started as a self-dependent youth with unremitting determination to secure adequate preparation for a life of service; to have envisioned a place in an organization and then laboriously striven to fill it; to have had the stability and stamina to bear a burden through the years with composure and unusual patience; to have established a household and become a father in a home which might well be emulated; to have found a hobby which has been developed with the skill of an artist; to have attained a level of spiritual excellence so that no one could doubt its eternal worth; to have done all of this is to comprehend well a fullness of life. We desire to honor the familiar campus figure pictured here by dedicating to him, our Business Manager, this 1951 CascapIAn.

DR. C. J. PIKE, PRESIDENT PROGRESSIVE MEASUREMENT The creators of our 1951 Cascapian have chosen a geometric figure as their chief design. Turning the pages of this memory book, very frequently we see this simple mathematical figure. And so, almost without our being aware of it, the science of mathe- matics is introduced into our annual. No field of study, perhaps, embodies principles so simple and yet so complex as are contained in this very necessary and widely used branch of learning. Take, for example, the dimensional idea. A point is very near nothing and has no dimension, but extended to a line it gives us a one-dimensional object. Planes are two dimensional. As we enter the next area, we have three-dimensional objects and are in the world of so lids. This is where we live. Scientific minds are wrestling with the idea of a fourth dimension. One scientist calls it time. Others have designated differently. At this point the capacity of the human mind is almost exhausted as we touch the unknown. And yet we are still in the field of mathematics. Isn’t this somewhat akin to life? Our simple everyday processes of living seem incon- sequential even to ourselves and yet may become, upon extension, part of something larger and of greater importance. Finally we find ourselves face to face with and in the realm of the infinite. We are in touch with God Himself. We cannot understand Him, but fortunately we can know Him. May we progressively measure our life itself and eventually discover that it has extended until encompassed by the very presence of God.
