-—Ts wo Published by THE ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY OF CASCADE COLLEGE, PORTLAND, OREGON o TT° oe Lani tr a Es oY oo Wa a hay 4 ee ee oo a eee el (Ores mean Oh (mae, RY of ad oe 9 eee de DEDICATION George B. Palmer To have started as a self-dependent youth with unremitting determination to secure adequate preparation for a life of service; to have envisioned a place in an organization and then laboriously striven to fill it; to have had the stability and stamina to bear a burden through the years with composure and unusual patience; to have established a household and become a father in a home which might well be emulated; to have found a hobby which has been developed with the skill of an artist; to have attained a level of spiritual excellence so that no one could doubt its eternal worth; to have done all of this is to comprehend well a fullness of life. We desire to honor the familiar campus figure pictured here by dedicating to him, our Business Manager, this 1951 CascapIAn. DR. C. J. PIKE, PRESIDENT PROGRESSIVE MEASUREMENT The creators of our 1951 Cascapian have chosen a geometric figure as their chief design. Turning the pages of this memory book, very frequently we see this simple mathematical figure. And so, almost without our being aware of it, the science of mathe- matics is introduced into our annual. No field of study, perhaps, embodies principles so simple and yet so complex as are contained in this very necessary and widely used branch of learning. Take, for example, the dimensional idea. A point is very near nothing and has no dimension, but extended to a line it gives us a one-dimensional object. Planes are two dimensional. As we enter the next area, we have three-dimensional objects and are in the world of so lids. This is where we live. Scientific minds are wrestling with the idea of a fourth dimension. One scientist calls it time. Others have designated differently. At this point the capacity of the human mind is almost exhausted as we touch the unknown. And yet we are still in the field of mathematics. Isn’t this somewhat akin to life? Our simple everyday processes of living seem incon- sequential even to ourselves and yet may become, upon extension, part of something larger and of greater importance. Finally we find ourselves face to face with and in the realm of the infinite. We are in touch with God Himself. We cannot understand Him, but fortunately we can know Him. May we progressively measure our life itself and eventually discover that it has extended until encompassed by the very presence of God. EARL P. The senior class this year appropriately selected chapel lighting controls as its gift to the school. Modern powerstat dimmers were in- stalled to control the brightness of the lights, including those over the platform, the spotlights, and the auditorium lights. These, together with a complete set of new mercury switches, will provide for smooth and silent transitions from gen- eral illumination to platform spotlighting and vice versa. These features will be appreciated by audiences as well as by recitalists and others who participate in platform programs. SENIOR SOCIAL GATHERING JAMES H. BROUGHER Clatskanie, Oregon A. B. Eugene, Oregon EVELYN WANVIG Canby, Oregon BARBARA WELCH Wenatchee, Washington | RICHARD WANVIG Canby, Oregon Eugene Lamb President LEADERSHIP Leadership is a quality imparted by the Lord to His own people. Throughout the ages, God has chosen leaders from all walks of life and used them in many and varied ways. In our school we have many avenues through which we may be called and used as leaders, and opportunities are on every hand for a young person to step out in front for the Lord. In our Associated Student Body there are rules set up by which a leader is chosen, guided, and yet allowed to use his own initiative. The organization is construct- ed to allow those who are chosen as leaders the greatest amount of freedom in the de- velopment of their capacities. In a time of crisis such as the world is facing today the students of Cascade College need to know not only their leaders, but their aims and aspirations as leaders. We need to be ready to step out as the Lord leads us and rely wholly upon His wisdom and direction, that we in turn might help others to prepare themselves for eternity. In an institution such as ours, thetrue source of leadership is God; therefore let us turn to Him and ask for His will. A large percentage of the students participate. There are many fields of activities in the sports program with basketball receiving the most attention this year. Touch football was rather hampered by the over abundance of rainfall and the season was consequent- ly cut short. Softball, volleyball, tennis, ping pong, and badminton are the other sports in which students participate. At Cascade every student is encouraged to take part in some sport. This is necessary in the development of a well-rounded personality. The sports program helps to teach the student the necessity of a cooperative attitude and a sense of fair play as well as to develop coordination and physical prowess. . | TOUCH FOOTBALL MEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS JUNIOR CLASS e4.
