We have been accused of being the worst and rowdiest grade ever to hit the Casady campus, but we hereby nominate the Class of '62 to surpass all of our before mentioned achievements. With such terrors as Frank Wallace, Bobby Lee, Don Bolen and Clark Nye to spurn the others on to greater devastation the school will never withstand this onslaught But there is a faint glimmer of hope lying patent amid this throng With Whit Lee and Johnny Swmford making the Junior Varsity in their pleb year Messrs Glbson and Gavula MAY have the start of a team which MIGHT compar with the 1956 57 football team And there are a few who torn between Elvis and Howdy Doody find time for a few minutes of study to keen up com ndable averages Such bookworms are Millonn Bullard Ann Forester James Morris Barney Loeffler Nancy Patterson and Susan Hoffman The Student Council may be carried to renowned existence with the faithful concern that Chris Clavert John Ware and Ann Forester have shown With such a well rounded contingent of brats these lower formersf of hfej should create much catharsis in the faculty ln the years to come D . Ginny Gill, John Bozalis, Sharon Dooley and Terry Dunlap burn the midnight oil to meet a deadline. The 1957 Twister hopes to be the best annual published to date. With many enthusiastic ideas tossed out the window, wilder ones have taken their place and as a result a series of abstracts are presented between these covers. Editor-in- chief John Bozalis, along with his Business Man- ager Sharon Dooley, has striven to make this year's annual a financially sound one. The staff is planning on contributing the majority of its profit towards the Senior Class gift. However a substantial sum will be left for the dependent juniors to prevent a financial panic. The difficult editing chores were left to Layton Runkle, Managing Editor, who not only worked faithfully, but enthusiastically, soberly and ef- ficiently. The picture-taking and photography editing is to be blamed on Bob Thach who will never be repayed for the film he bought. Last, but by no means least, poor Father Gericke, our benign Faculty Advisor offered us inspiration and hope in our more trying moments. . , . ,iff ,Y - Y I 'L xiii -. 4 - I -1 1.1 x s f ' X 12 ' hr ' Wigs Lay ton Runkle 'Managing Editor 9h iron Dooley Bu int s WI inager and John Bozali Editor 1 '91 4- 5 I , fr Q, L ,,i:.. . . ,. . . .-.gf V i 'ff ' ff L s r f . The Cyclones again came up on top with a 31-13 victory. The game was marked by the scat-back tactics of Roy Williams who scored twice and the crushing Casady ground game which netted 435 yds. rushing while holding Tuttle to 3 first downs. The game with Casadys city rivals Catholic High came on Sept. 28. Casady toyed with them for four quarters and triumphed 46-7. An array of backs scored including Runkle, Williams Ken Binder John Mont- gomery, and end Ronal Bonebrake. The game following Catholic saw the Cyclones open Conference play against St. Stephens of Austin, Texas. Although Casady won under the scorching sun and deadening humidity, the 20-0 victory was a pyrrhic one for 'Roy Williams and Bill Swinford who were hurt and benched for the rest of the season. Even though the Cyclones were suffering from fa tigue and bruises they waded through an inferior St Marys team the next week 57 0 A capacity crowd watched as Larry Brown paced the victors with two touchdowns October 19 the Cyclones were again on the road for conference play This time it was the St John Rebels of Houston Texas who were vanquished It was all conference fullback Layton Runkle who led the 33 0 win with three touchdowns Of Casadys 350 yards net rushing 243 yards belonged to Runkle Perhaps the most crucial game of the season was played Nov 2 against Kinkaid of Houston The power ful Falcons led by passer Travis Erwin were also undefeated and the conference championship depended upon this game The Cyclones took a half time lead of 14 0 on two touchdowns by Larry Brown and held the Falcons to only one score. Credit should be given to the great defensive line play of the Cyclones as they held Kinkaid again and again with short yardage to go for a touchdown. Casady was now looking for its eighth straight win and claimed it from Central 26-13. It was the first time Casady had played Class A teams but the showed they were equal to the task. Scoring honors again went to Layton Runkle, who ripped off touch- down gallops from 25 16 and 47 yards out. The final game was against Classen, a tough Class A team who only weeks before had beaten Central. The game was won by the Cyclones 12-6. They played flawless football and it was truly a team victory. Looking over the season, Casady gained 2500 yards rushing while making 140 first downs. They scored 284 oints to the opponents 52. It is generally con- ceded, that this is the best team in the school's history and it may be a long time before its equal is seen. CYCLIJNES FOUBTlI IN CQINFERENCE Basketball at Casady during the 1956-1957 season has still continued on the upward swing that it has enjoyed ever since coach Gibson took over the reins in 1954. Bettering last year's mark of 9-13, this year's quintet showed a decided improvement while working on a 10-12 season. As were there numerous disappointments, so also were there numerous highlights. On two occasions Little All-City center Bert Messenbaugh poured through better than 30 points, against St. Stephen's where Casady won by a 55 to 37 margin and against St. Mary's where the Rockets triumphed 74 to 62. Messenbaugh was the club's leading rebounder as well and amassed a total of 311 points for an 18.3 point scoring average. Second in scoring was Roy Williams with a 10.7 average and much can be said for the scrappy hustle and determination of the other six lettermen. Co-captain Ken Binder, John Montgomery, Gordon Rainey, Bill West, Larry Brown, and dead- eye Layton Runkle. The spirit was good and the will to win was there. Unfortunately, at times the scoring punch was missing as was evidenced by the 28 to 48 shellacking at the hands of Catholic High, after the Cyclones had twice previously defeated their Irish rivals 53 to 42 and 45 to 39. In conference play, the Cyclones had bright moments but played raggedly enough to garner a mediocre 2-3 record. The pair of wins came at the expense of St. Stephen's 55 to 37 and St. John's 65 to 42 and two of the losses were quite undeserved. At Dallas, the Cy- clones blew a 17 point lead at half-time and bowed to St. Mark's 47 to 50. At Houston, Lutheran outmanned Casady 7 to 5 and crawled away with a disputed 49 to 43 overtime win. Casady played its best game against the mighty Kinkaid Falcons who were to go on to an unbeaten conference championship. The Cy- clones completely outclassed Kinkaid and had a 7 point lead at half-time, but failed to hold it and fell 49 to 73. The type of basketball hustle and determination ex- hibited throughout the season under a rather unim- pressive record, was evidenced by the choice of the 1956-1957 all conference team. This honorary quintet was composed of three Kinkaid boys and two from Casady, Messenbaugh and Williams. These two were picked over many others whose teams had finer rec- ords but no finer determination. It is important to note that only three lettermen graduate, and Coach Gibson is watching for the scales to tip towards a winning team next year. As of date the record stands at twelve wins and two defeats. Bolstered by the stellar pitching performances turned in by Layton Runkle, who hasn't lost a game in the last two years, and the booming bat of Bert Messen- baugh, currently leading the team with a hefty .480 batting average, the chance for finishing the season with only two blemishes looks bright. The season was spiced by an 11-0 Runkle no-hitter against Catholic and a clutch 2-0 stint turned in by lefty Bert Messenbaugh over Midwest City. The final member of the big three itching staff, Roy Will- iams, had his day against Central, winning 6-2 and striking out 16. The three regulars were backed up by the old fireman himself, steady Mark Connolly. Working strictly in relief, Connolly has garnered a 1-0 record. The team as a whole has hit better than any other and credit must be given to the tight defense of in- fielders Larry Brown, Gordon Rainey, and John Mont- gomery. The only sophomore to crack the lineup was Bill West who helped tremendously both as a defensive outfielder and a relief pitcher. The low point of the year came when the Cyclones, top-seeded B team, dropped a 5-2 game in the Nor- man Tournament to formerly unheralded Purcell. The only other loss came at the hands of Del City 6-4 but even then Casady outhit the Eagles 8 to 3. Although losing six lettermen, including the two top pitchers, Coach George Whitney is optimistic about the future and rightly so. This year's Juniors will pro- vide a firm nucleus, and the fine Junior Varsity program will yield several promising players to fill the gaps, we hope. Handicapped by bad weather and lack of practice time, the Cyclones were a perennial Class B threat at any meet they entered, state or local. The season opener was a tri-meet with Central and Classen, held on Casady's new dirt track, and it was here that Casady first experienced the bad luck that was to plague them throughout the year. A dropped baton in the 880 yard rela lost the meet to Central with a score of 58 points. Casady was second with 55, followed by Classen with 17. However, there were some bright spots such as the two first place wins garnered by Ken Binder in the 100 and 220 yard dashesg the winning mile relay team, the one-two finish of Roy Williams and Bert Messenbaugh in the broad- jumpg Hughes Coston winning the shotputg and Roy Williams with the winning discus throw. The track story of 1957 was largely one of the relay teams. At the Weturnka Relays, the Casady 440 yard relay team was disqualified because Ronal Bonebrake fell and twisted his ankle, sidelining him for the re- mainder of the season. The 880 yard relay team took second place because of the lack of a sufficient substitute for Bonebrake. The following week the Cyclone Cindermen jour- neyed to Shawnee for the Bison relays. The 440 team took a second and the 880 men placed first with a time of 1.34.8. The Cyclone team finished third in the meet with a total of 16 points. The final effort of the year was at Edmond where wins were captured by Ken Binder in. the individual 100 and 220 yard clashes. Binder also captured the individual trophy given to the boy who collected the highest number of points. He finished the day with 12. Credit must also be given to the 880 yard relay team who tied for first with Hobart with a time of 1.35.8. This 880 yard team, one of the fastest in state com- petition, was composed of Ken Binder, Roy Williams, Johnny Bozalis and Layton Runkle. Bill West ran in Bozalis' place at the Edmond meet due to a back injury to the former.
