chool government excel The Student Council planned an exciting and successful year. Among many fund raising events they had many dances and motivational assemblies. The student coun- cil also planned the annual spirit week which, as always, was a hit. Throughout the year the Student Council had many trials which tried their abilities to the limit. They handled such problems as having the fountain returned to normal and fought for student parking. The Student Council is the government that gets everything done to the benefit of the students at our school. To get things going, the council meets with the faculty and administration to discuss curriculum, student benefits and other matters of inter- ests to the students. This year's Student Body officers are President David Lu, Vice President Jake Salazar, Secretary Denise Linely, and Trea- surer James Faucette. This is the first time for all officers to be from the junior class. At the beginning of the year Mr. Lupe Deleon was the student Council Sponso . Shortly after, he resigned. Mr. Ch ck McLeod then took over as sponsor. we is f g ,cbfiffgj Vf13YtjcY , D LULLXJ OV W Tl We Sfliifeae C5600 .QQ 5,-,UL M! Captured here are a few of the freshman cheerleaders Kami Fretheim, Celeste Kortsen, Brenda Wallace, Kim Coryell, and Steph- anie Yon. During a home JV basketball game JV cheer- leaders promote spirit by leading several different cheers. The cheerleaders above are Julie Vargo, and Carolyn Vanllazel. At every football game, basketball game, and pep assembly three groups of people are always there: Freshman, JV, and Varsity cheer squads. The cheer squads are the backbone of the spirit at CGUHS. When ever we need a little pep, the cheerleaders are there no matter how good or how bad we are doing. Ms. Rosemary DeJaeger, JV Cheerleader sponsor, says The main reason of the JV cheerleading squad is to promote spirit and enthusiasm at football and basketball games. All cheerleaders are required to support sport teams with enthusiasm and a good attitude. Freshman Cheerleader Christie Ann Lara says, It takes a lot of effort and cooperation to be on cheer squad. Cheerleaders can be seen practicing almost every day after school, per- forming at basketball games and football games Qincluding quite a few away gamesj, and leading cheers at all pep assemblies. If there is one word that could describe the cheer squads at CGUHS it would be SPIRITED. The JV Cheer Squad has a very unique motto, S.P.V. which stands for spirit, pride, and uni- ty. Which I guess is what it takes to be a cheerleader. The students at CGUHS would probably be a lot less spirited if it were not for the cheer- leaders. 27

Student body president David Lu Cbackj takes reports from student council mem- bers on the treasury and past activities at a regular meeting. The group meets every other Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. in the Ari- zona room of the library. During these meetings student council members organize activities such as pep assemblies, motiva- tional assemblies, carnivals, and fundrais- ing projects to support activities. Special meetings are held when necessary to take care of business. Sophomore class sponsor Miss Kathy Jue advises class officers in planning meetings, fund raisers, and activities for all sopho- mores.
