he C.G.U.H.S. Marching Band consists not only of instrumentalists but a Flag line, and the Pom-Pons as well. The picture below is from the University of Arizona Band Day, which was one of the many competitions the Band performed in. Here they received an 'excellent' rating. Good job band! Keep up the wonderful shows that entertain us so much! le, 1 ati Leading the band takes hard work and dedication Drum Major Bobbi Gerdis shows both of these The three Drum Majors led the band to an Excellent season . Their shows entertained us all throughout the year. The hard work paid off. Playing a solo is one of the most rewarding parts of band. Here, Jason Linley plays the solo in Send in the clowns . Jason was one of the three soloists in the marching band. Bands Excel Through Hours Of Practice Have you ever been to a sporting event or pep assembly that lacked spirit? If so, you were probably bored and didn't enjoy this event. In order to get total enjoyment out of a sporting event or pep assembly, you need to feel some spirit, and what could bring on spirit better than music? In other words, bring on the Band! The Marching Band plays at all home football games, and presents a half-time show. In addition, they play in the Home- coming parade, and in the 0'odham Tash Parade. Band also plays at home basketball games and during pep assemblies. This year they went to three contests: ASU Band Day, U of A Band Day, and the Coronado Invitational Band Festival. They received an Excellent rating at all three of these competitions. Performances Band also plays at a vari- ety of community functions. They also pre- sent four concerts during the year. Band attracted a number of people this year. The Marching Band has one-hundred and thirty two members. This was a result of a successful experiment of director Rich- ard Lingwall to combine two hours into one band. They practiced together twice a week. The Symphonic Band had seventy-seven members, while the Concert Band had thir- ty-two. One of the more elite groups is the Jazz Band. Only fifteen members were able to participate. Aside from regular classes almost all band members put in many long and hard hours on the side. Their enthusiasm shines through all. 21

Different clubs are for different people. Have you found the club that best suits you? There are various clubs for all kinds of students because each student has a dif- ferent style and background. Students for Multi-Cultural Understand- ing is sponsored by Ms. J ameela Mutab. It helps students understand and appreicate cultures and customs of themselves and others. It also helps students to be aware and fight off racial and ethnic sterotypes. Most of all, the club helps promote better student relationships. The club is interest- ing and enlightening. You will also meet a lot of new friends, said Mrs. Mutab. SADD, or Students Against Drunk Driv- ing, is a club formed to arouse a concern for drunk driving. The main purpose of the club is to discourage and give alterna- tives to drunk driving, said Ms. Fox, SADD sponsor. If you're going to drink, don't drive. If you're going to drive, don't drink, said member Brett Wallace. ICAAN is a group for people who have a harder time learning than others. These students are learning to show themselves they can do things on their own and reach their goals. There are the accomplishments of the ICAAN members. All three of these groups are able to broaden views and help students under- stand fellow students. In their first years of existence at CGUHS, these clubs accom- plished their goals. 22 ICAAN: fFrontJ Jocelyn Wellington, Mrs. Rhonda Boales, Tony Garza, Brian Bennehaly, CSecondJ Annette, J ua Joseph Antone, Martin Jose, Cindy Williams, Mary Alice Cummings, Fay Hovis, Victoria Prisoc, Blanca Mano Terry Scott, CThirdj Ernie Saucedo, Carol Stump, Diane Chavez, Christine McQuillan, George Sigala, Nadi: Pablo, CFourthj Kenyan Bower, David Wyatt, Juana Miranda, Tasha Matthews, Karen Enos.
