The people of the town, with the help of the wise, did fill this space. Errected up from the tough soil, came mighty rounded towers. Men and women of high position pro- claimed this a learning place. Lords and Ladies did arrive at Hrst and became lost in this now kingdom of great expanse. Yet behold! For scorcerers and scoreresses did guide the lost through the tangled paths and mazed rooms. Taking matters in hand, the mentors then taught them the ways and wonders of the world. As time passed in seasons, the rain drenched their clothes, and the wind beat down upon their backs. Rays of bright sunlight shone upon them and betrayed them no longer as boys and girls but as Dukes and Duchesses of the realm. The nobles of this land were filled with awe as they gazed at the grteat murals painted upon the walls by students of the Hne arts. Merry bands and minstrels played and sang in harmony, while dazzling maidens strolled about and young muscled knights displayed great chivilary. Upon the gates a perennial pounding was heard, along with angry threats and shouts. From within they did look out and found their kingdom surrounded by the Purple and White fury of their rivals. It took not only physical strength though to rid these warriors from the gates. It was the great sparkling spirit of Green and Gold which the nobles voiced in unity, that caused the opponents to lea ve. Their purple and whiteness quickly faded to dullness and the defeated army stumbled back to their old, aging castle. Suddenly, as it had happened before Dukes and Duchesses were transformed into Princes and Princesses of cleverness and great might. Ha ving reached this level, tests of skills and knowledge were set upon them. As time went forward they climbed the high towers till they reached the very tallest of heights in the kingdom. Then at last they were crowned Kings and Queens. As they looked about they could see the whole of the realm and they viewed all the realms which are contained in this world. Some were Hlled with fear, some did cry with sorrow, yet others did laugh with joy, but all did set their goals and left to meet this challenge. Though they ha ve left, their names and deeds shall remain in this Green and Golden book for eternity. By Lisa I banez 1 CS iii: Nr' Y 1 41? r u -' m fi' 53 Cgamc-E: V A GQ M. There are two lunctions which our football program should serve in order to benelit those people participating in the sport: ll It should be lun. 21 It should contribute in a most worthwhile manner to the education of the participants. Winning football certainly contributes greatly to the amount ol' enjoyment that a participant derives from the game. The player who learns how to prepare himself sulliciently to win in this highly competitive sport has learned much in terms of group unity, scllldiseipline. courage, and application of ellort. The Team developed into a ball-control team which could .V 'vii keep possession ofthe ball for minutes at a time and continually frustrated their opponents. An outstanding group of I2 Seniors led the Casa Booters in an unbeaten streak that seemed as if it would never end. The season had many highlights. The 5-0 win in the Montgomery Tournament Finals and the perfect 8-0 Sonoma County League Record were chief among them. The team played well in the first round of the Tournament of Champions, beating Acalanes 4-I. ln the semi-Hnals they squeaked by Tamalpais I-0. The unbeaten string was at 34 games and the season record 21-0-I going into the finals against Montgomery, whom we had beaten twice. They played a second half and beat us 4-l. lt was a great season in which we all learned to work together for the common good. All season we learned how to win with humility and finally, in the end, we learned how to accept defeat with grace. Soccer at Casa Grande has come to mean something special. This year's 1978-79 Casa Grande Varsity Basketball team could possibly be the best basketball team to play at Casa Grande. lt is made up of eight seniors, three juniors, and one starting sophomore. -LA This year's team lost only one senior through graduation last year. It is a very experienced team and could possibly win the Sonoma County Championship. To date they have only lost two games at home, and Hnished second in the Vintage Wine Valley Invitational Tournament in Napa, losing in the Hnal game to Redwood High which is number one at this time in the Marin County Athletic League. The Gauchos also Hnished second in the Rose City Tournament, which is one of the best tournaments in Northern California. They lost only to Montgomery High by two points which at this time is the number one team in the North Bay League and expected to win their league for the third straight year. At this time the Gauchos ha ve compiled 13 wins and 6 losses and is on the way to becoming the best Varsity Basketball record in the history of the school which is 17 wins and 8 losses. There are four starters who are averaging in double Hgures. They are all seniors. Adam Zivot, Tom Parrish, Keith Carter and Jeff Pieper. After l 7 games Casa Grande Varsity is the highest scoring basketball team in the Redwood Empire averaging 65.8 points per game. With only 6 games remaining and the toughest part of the season over it is hoped that this particular group of young basketball players can win the coveted title of being the Sonoma County League Champions. The lirst game was won by Casa Grande through the talent of the team to hit crucial free throws, turning Petaluma louls into points. The second game was simply won by the desire ofthe team to pull the game out in the last lbw seconds by two points, 42-40. It has been my pleasure to coach at Casa Grande this year and to observe the improvement of each individual player. The contribution each girl has made to the team has been most valuable in the success of our season, Our two captains, seniors Kinr Burgess and Marie Vanciel, have provided the court leadership we've needed all year, and they will surely be missed next year. Their vacancies on the .squad will try to be lilled by a most promising group of players: Bev Cramer. Patti Barrett, Nikki Plencner. Sue Phillips along with mainstayes Sheri Bohling. Karen Kristovich, and Mary Lay man. The litture ofgirls' basketball at Casa Grande looks very bright due to the dedication and desire that these players have brought to the game. Their enthusiasm to excel at the game of basketball has been extremely valuable in the coachability ofthe team. My thanks to assistant coaches Margy Ayotte and Sid Shired for all their help this season. Also, thanks to our managers Sherrie Armstrong, Linda Gonsalves, and Bernadette DeVenuto Hur the terri0e job they did. I extend to our two graduating seniors. Kim Burgess and Marie Vanciel, the best of luck in their ltrture plans, This has been a good season for the Casa Grande girls' basketball team. May the years ahead prove worthy of our expectations ofthis team. Q---- Ra,M f .,,,,-v A 'l-q...,,,,,,' Mary Layman Karen Kristovich Sue Phillips it 3 or TIIE 3 g - ' ' ' ' H..-. .-. . -.. The 6 returning varsity players, 3 of which are pitchers, plus 5 players from the Junior Varsity should provide a good nucleus to this year's team. I believe the Sonoma County League will be a tight race this season and with a few breaks Casa Grande could be one of the major teams to consider. The opportunity to repeat as S.C.L. Coach Steve Conner The 1978-79 Wrestling team, con1prised of a small group of hard working individuals, compiled a 3-5 record with wins against Santa Rosa, Sonoma and Piner. Our team lacked the manpower to be highly competitive but many wrestlers were able to accomplish great individual efforts. We had three wrestlers who had undeleated dual meet seasons on top of winning the Sonoma County League Championships in their weight divisions. There were 5 Varsity wrestlers who went to the North Coast Section Championships. ..-L44 In the 95 lb. division, Ivan Worden was undefeated in the dual meets and won the SCL Championship. He also took a second in the Rancho Cotate Tournament and a Hrs! in the Analy Tournament. .1efl' Groen and .Albert Williams took turns wrestling in the 103 lb weight class. Grocn took second in the Analy Tournament and in the SCL C ha mpionships. Alvin Otani was the second undeleated league champion. Wrestling in the 112 lb weight division, he placed third at the Analy Tournament and look lirst in the league championship meet. Steve Donate wrestled above his weight in the 1201b division. He took third in the league tournament and wrestled well all year. Charles Aikins, wrestling for his hrs! year, Hlled the 127 lb class, Aikins showes alot of promise for his next two years at Casa. .luan Colorado was the best Hrs! year wrestler on the team. ln the 133 lb weight division, he took second in the SCL Championships. In the 138 lb class, Bill Ferencc, a second year wrestler, showed great improvement over the season. He took fourth in the league tournament and shows much promise of doing well next year. At 145 lbs, Bill Davis started out well this year and showed promise of a good season. A two week absence, due to illness, caused Davis to fall behind and he never fully regained his form. 1 .lohn Rice, wrestling at 191 lbs, was the teams third undefeated league champion, He won the SCL Championship meet and took a Hrst in the Analy Tournament where he was named Most Outstanding Heavyweight Wrestler. The team has put a lot of effort and time into practice. The team is led by junior Mike Piver who is probably the best golfer in the SCL. We are backed up by senior Andre Lavilla and sophomore Rod Wilson, who are also Very line golfers. Choir offers the student an opportunity to sing and perform a variety of music. The choir performed three concerts this fall. We participated in the opening ceremonies of the Petaluma Historical Museum. Our other two concerts were for the District Secretaries of Petaluma and our annual Christmas concert for parents and friends. In March of this year the choir put on its first variety show.
