For the most part, the efforts of the administration at CHS went unnoticed. Principal John Stevens, bus driver administrator Glen Rose, and secretaries Jane Ingold and Barbara Norman nevertheless continued to work diligently throughout the year to run CHS smoothly. At the beginning of the school year, the administration found itself without an assistant principal; however, they quickly recognized the administrative abilities of Mr. Fulford, a science teacher new to CHS this year. Thus, Mr. Fulford became the administrative assistant as soon as a replacement science teacher was found. The guidance department constituted another area of administration at CHS. Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Rigdon, the CHS counselors, assisted students in deciding upon their plans after high school. Mrs. Barbara Norman — Teacher’s Mrs. Sara Rigdon — Appalachian. N.C. State. BS. After studying one’s own lan- guage for many years, more courses on the same subject might seem boring. However, CHS realized this fact and made its English courses invigorating. In the area of novels, students read clasics like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well as new creations such as The Andromeda Strain. Poetry included well-known favorites by Sandburg, Frost, and Lord Byron, as well as the bizarre by Feringhetti. Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Wilder’s Our Town were examples of drama studied in the English department. English teachers stressed grammar only in instances concerning compositions on this literature. In some courses term papers were required at the end of the year. Mrs. Dorothy Baker — Blue Mt. College. Univ. of S. Miss.. BA. MS: English IV.
