Undeniably, CHS was fortunate in having a member of its faculty with these outstanding qualities. In the classroom, her students all benefited from her genuine interest in their educational growth and broadening their knowledge of the science and mathematical subjects which she taught. In addition to this, she took an avid interest in her students’ personal life and well- being. As head of the Sudent Advi- sory Council, she worked for the 6 and Outstanding Person improvement of each student’s situation at CHS. During a time of racial conflict at the school, her openmindedness and wisdom gained her the respect of all students concerned. In addition to her SAC re- sponsibilities, she was advisor of the Student Council and head sponsor of the Senior Class. She presently participates in a pottery class and a weaving class at N.C. State University. It is not often that educators are as dedicated to their profes- sion as she. Her happiness stems from fulfilling the educa- tional needs of her students. For these reasons, we dedicate YRAC '72, to you, Mrs. Sue Tomlin. 7 HZMOd n JM Educational Growth Provided SO I TRIED IT “ c . F Logarithms 7y Q' 'j . rr-. A‘ FufUCTlCfcS D. Bus Drivers Mrs. Jane Ingold — School Secretary 24 For the most part, the efforts of the administration at CHS went unnoticed. Principal John Stevens, bus driver administrator Glen Rose, and secretaries Jane Ingold and Barbara Norman nevertheless continued to work diligently throughout the year to run CHS smoothly. At the beginning of the school year, the administration found itself without an assistant principal; however, they quickly recognized the administrative abilities of Mr. Fulford, a science teacher new to CHS this year. Thus, Mr. Fulford became the administrative assistant as soon as a replacement science teacher was found. The guidance department constituted another area of administration at CHS. Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Rigdon, the CHS counselors, assisted students in deciding upon their plans after high school. Mrs. Barbara Norman — Teacher’s Mrs. Sara Rigdon — Appalachian. N.C. State. BS. M.Ed.; Guidance Aide 25 After studying one’s own lan- guage for many years, more courses on the same subject might seem boring. However, CHS realized this fact and made its English courses invigorating. In the area of novels, students read clasics like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well as new creations such as The Andromeda Strain. Poetry included well-known favorites by Sandburg, Frost, and Lord Byron, as well as the bizarre by Feringhetti. Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Wilder’s Our Town were examples of drama studied in the English department. English teachers stressed grammar only in instances concerning compositions on this literature. In some courses term papers were required at the end of the year. Mrs. Dorothy Baker — Blue Mt. College. Univ. of S. Miss.. BA. MS: English IV. Often, during the course of the year, the English teachers assigned research topics to their students. The various facilities offered by the CHS library became extremely useful in those cases. The librarians reserved books necessary for doing such research and helped students search for other perti- nent materials. In addition to using the library for research, students came to the library for pure enjoyment. The library added many new books to its shelves this year. Plays, journals, diaries, and fiction made up some of the various topics of these books. The library also received several newspapers daily, in addition to getting magazines periodically. Student Council CHS offered the student a number of courses in each of the major branches of high school mathematics: general math, ge- ometry. and algebra. In the field of mathematics, the basic courses offered were Gen- eral Math I and II, but the student interested in business could take bookkeeping or busi- ness mathematics. The basic algebra sequence, Algebra I and II, covered the techniques from solving linear equations in one variable to solving simultaneous equations. In geometry, Plain Geometry was the course initially taken, al- though one could study the subject further by taking Trigo- nometry and Analytic Geometry. Advanced Math was the highest course offered at CHS. It enveloped many fields of mathe- matics, covering algebra, trigo- nometry, and analysis. II 31 In keeping up with the in- creasing knowledge obtained each year in the scientific field, CHS had its scientific department well-equipped to give each student a more meaningful education. Students in the life sciences studied biology by using mi- croscopes; watching films, and dissecting a number of animals. In advanced biology, students delved deeper into the structure of cells and dissected sharks. Chemistry and physics students enjoyed their many labs. Students of chemistry learned of the atom and its properties while Physics taught students the principles behind motion and waves. Both of these courses were characterized by relatively new textbooks, which were acclaimed by all to be more interesting and challenging. In years past, all juniors had been required to take U.S. History, a subject which they had studied in the lower grades for several years. Because of the success of one semester self interest courses such as Sociology, Eco- nomics, and Psycology, U.S. History, was dropped from the curriculum and replaced by other one semester courses, including recent American His- tory, Law and Justice, and Mi- nority groups. With these new courses, interest at CHS in the social sciences reached a new high. Mr. Tom Kelly — Elon College. AB: World Historv. Track. Cross Country. Mrs. Jordan — Advisor to blind students CHS students interested in business occupations after finishing high school could take a number of related courses offered by CHS. Typing, short- hand, bookkeeping, and busi- ness mathematics comprised the list of the business-oriented studies at Cary High. One of the essential skills in the field of business is typing. In the various CHS typing courses this year, students learned basic typing procedures, speed, and accuracy. Shorthand was learned like a foriegn language. The “chicken-scratchings which were unintelligible to the student at the beginning of the year proved to be a time saving method. In the bookkeeping and business math courses, students studied the methods for keeping records and figuring out sales percentages and interest, knowl- edge which will be invaluable. In addition, they applied this newly- acquired knowledge in the lab. Health occupations was an excellent course for future nurses. Besides studying procedures, students learned various aspects of the nursing profession through actual expe- rience. Auto mechanics students learned about every major part of the automobile while learning an important occupation. The combination of classroom and work situations provided by Industrial Cooperative Training and Distributive Education enabled students to acquire valuable business skills. The Marching 100, directed by Mr. Jimmy Burns and drum major Dave Rockefeller, presented many captivating per- formances, including half-time shows, parades, and concerts. In the art department students learned to be creative, engaging in many modes of artistic expression while study- ing the theory behind these methods. The CHS home economics courses helped prepare students in many skills useful in later life. Driver’s Education instructed students in fundamentals of safe driving by means of classroom study and driving experience. Aviation was designed to prepare students to qualify for pilot licenses. For slower learners CHS provided special education classes, which helped these students achieve. In addition to intramural competition, the physical educa- tion department provided classes to increase physical vigor and skills. The P.E. department also sponsored the various interscholastic sports. CHS students often did not see the janitorial staff at work. The well-kept grounds and spot- less buildings, however, reflected the long hours they put into their work. Feeding over a thousand students with unique tastes and insatiable appetites would seem to be an impossible task, but the CHS cafeteria staff met this challenge again this year. Besides planning events of interest to all students, the Student Council helped to promote better relations be- tween the students, faculty, and administration. The Student Council managed the Student Supply Store where such essential school items as pencils, pens, erasers, and paper were sold. The Student Council also allotted parking spaces to all students who paid the required fee, and fined those students who parked in another’s designated parking area. Another task operated by the Student Council this year was the distribution of locks at a minimum rental fee. Members of the Student Council used the school’s intercom system to make announcements of interest to students and faculty. 48 Bela Club: Firs! Row: Mrs. Baker. Sponsor. Jim George. The annual Beta Club candy sales began early in the school year. The money from the candy sales paid for various communi- ty projects, the Beta Club Schol- arship, and arrangements for CHS Beta Club members to attend the State Beta Club Con- vention in Raleigh. Among the various projects to help other people, club members helped address envelopes for the American Res- piratory Association. Later in the year members enjoyed a speaker from the Governor Morehead School for the blind. This woman introduced Beta Club Members to various methods and equipment employed in teaching the blind. CHS cheerleaders played an important role in athletic events. Even when spirits were low, a rousing cheer led by these girls boosted morale. CHS was fortunate in having vivacious Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders who added to the team’s efforts despite in- clement weather or other adverse conditions. The spirited Varsity Cheerleaders showed their tal- ents on many occasions. At pep rallies, football games, basketball games, and other ath- letic proceedings, the Varsity Cheerleaders were present and leading cheers. The JV Cheerleaders were also invaluable to CHS spirit. Their presence at games and pep rallies was inspirational to the Junior Varsity athletes. Besides learning new cheers, the Cheerleading squads were occupied with making Cary Imp posters, selling Cary stickers, and leading impromptu pep rallies. Both the CHS Varsity and Junior Varsity cheering squads displayed high standards of sportsmanship as well as outstanding cooperation while serving CHS. Debra Adams and Ka '-'' Curtis file schedule cards, Operation of School Many CHS students worked in service for Cary High this year. Two of the ways in which students served were office and library assistants. Many students worked in the CHS offices. These students de- livered messages, mimeo- graphed copies for teachers, and collected absentee lists. Credit for the smooth operation of the school can be attributed to the diligence and dedication of these workers. Other students worked as library assistants. These students checked books, kept the library organized, decorated, and assisted students. Because of their hard work, all students were better able to benefit from the library. Certainly, their efforts were a cause of increased library work this year. Library Assistants: First Row: Mrs. Williams. Sponsor., Dianne Humphries. Dolly Zacney. Marcia Smith, and Mrs. Pendereratt. Students for Better Human Understanding helped their fellowman this year by achiev- ing many worth while goals. SBHU members also listened to speakers during the year, from varied occupations, races, and religions. These speakers talked about pollution and drug problems, as well as other problems facing young people today. They heard a member of the John Birch Society and an organic food specialist. SBHU members sold Christmas cards for UNICEF, participated in a walk for hunger, and collected gum wrappers for which they received two cents each, which went to a worthy cause. In addition to helping others this helped cut down on the litter problem. As the year came to a close, members could look back with the satisfaction that they had helped humanity in their own way, however small. Through SBHU and Drama Julie Bowling makes idle conversation with the townspeople Amy Webb. Betty Moore, and Sneila McDonald in The Lottery. Janice Whelan comes upon a bewildering situation with Jon Newsome. Spann Brockman, and Tom Flebotte in Fragments. CHS students interested in drama joined the Limelighters this year. This club was very important to those involved in dramatics since each was able to display his talent or skill through acting. designing, building scenery, or preforming, and various other tasks which aided the success of the Limelighters’ plays. The Limelighters produced three one-act plays in the fall and a three-act play in the spring. The Drama Club’s members gained much experience and insight to theatrical arts from visiting community and univer- sity plays, drama workshops, and discussion groups in the Raleigh-Durham area. In addition they participated in the Carolina Dramatic Assocation Festivals in the spring. The Limelighters gave each member valuable knowledge of the theater. At the same time students enjoyed binding friendships and exchanging new ideas in the drama world. Dale Marsh and Dolly Zacny portray Adam and Eve in the play The Apple- Bit. Being a new club, the CHS German Club busied itself with obtaining a solid, basic foundation. Anyone interested in Germany’s culture and peo- ple could join. The German Club Constitution was patterned after the Beta and Spanish Clubs’ constitutions. One of the most important functions of the club was its participation in the International Christmas Party, the first at CHS. At this festival, comprised of German, French, and Spanish Club members, skits and refreshments were enjoyed by all. German Club members decorated a small Christmas Tree and provided a miniture house made of ginger- bread. Members also dreamed of a visit to Germany; but since such a trip would be impossible, the club had a somewhat shorter trip. The French Club of CHS began the year of 1971-1972 with the annual initiation of new members. The initiation consisted of the usual comical attire, group skits, and drinking of the infamous French Brew. Before Christmas vacation, the French Club participated in an International Christmas Party with the Spanish and German Clubs. Christmas carols were sung, refreshments were served, and skits were performed. During the spring of the year, the French Club enjoyed a banquet at N.C. State University. The Club also witnessed a demonstration on the art of cooking French crepes by Mrs. Maddox, the sponsor, which all present devoured. All in all, the students enjoyed a variety of events which proved to be one of the most active years the French Club had experienced in years. Club members await treasurer Dawn Lane’s reaction to the crepes. 57 Willing Students Join Tonya Cottrell and Cheryl Ivey prepare for the Cary Band Day Parade. Los Alegros, the Spanish Club, added spice to this year’s Spanish departments. The year began with new Los Alegros members participating in a rather unusual initiation. At another meeting later, Pres- ident Pat Winslow spoke on her exciting trip to Mexico and showed slides of the beautiful Mexican countryside. The annu- al Christmas party, complete with pinata and music, spruced up the holiday season with a Spanish flare. Los Alegros members ushered at the Ringling Brothers, Barnum, and Bailey Circus when it came to Raleigh. With the money, they sent another member to a Spanish speaking country. The year began with the an- nual initiation of new members. This initiation, as usual, was considered a “rough” one. Among the many dreaded tasks that FBLA’s new members had to do was the drinking of the famed FBLA Brew. This notorious brew’s recipe was kept secret from the new members until after the concoction had been imbibed. FBLA’s other activities included selling Tom Watt kits before Christmas in order to earn money, thus sending one of their membership to the annual State Convention. The year ended with goodbyes and secret thoughts about what to put in next year’s FBLA Brew. 62 Mrs. Perr r. FBLA sponsor, and Cheryl Battle, a top seller of Tom Watt, discuss FBLA business. The CHS chapter of Coopera- tive Office Occupations provided students interested in business and office occupations a chance to learn new tech- niques while they made new friendships. COO taught students how to operate the various pieces of machinery used in today’s mod- ern businesses. These students obtained new knowledge in the field of office occupations. Machines, which these future office personnel practiced with, included the mimeograph machine, the adding machine, and dictaphone. Students also learned the basics of office procedures and discovered other highlights of the business world. Not only did these students practice with office machines; they also took part in the busi- ness world. During a class session. Diane Carter practices her techniques on the adding machine. Beneficial to CHS Students Tamara McNeil learns how to use the dictaphone. This group of high spirited students added sparks of enthu- siasm to the Cary pep rallies and games. In addition to knowing all the cheers and shouting these out of school spirit events, the Pep Club also participated in other activities. The annual homecoming game was decorated with a green and white chain draped across the spectator fence. Pep Club members sold links of this chain for a nickel each to students who wished to back the team. Pep Club members also rode in the annual Cary Band Day Parade. Another money-making proj- ect of the Pep Club were the sale of Christmas cards. Members walked the streets of Cary in the bitter winter weather selling cards of Christmas greetings. The team’s season record of two wins and eight losses was not a true indication of how determined the play of the team was. The season began with a fa- vorable 14-0 win over Apex, but three straight defeats which were decided in the closing minutes seemed to break the players’ spirit. But again, injuries and bad breaks plagued the Imps and the season ended with five disheartening losses. Nevertheless, the players can be proud of their effort. Milton Battle turns to receive a TD pass against Roxboro. An exciting and successful Junior Varsity Football Team displayed outstanding talent and determination this year. With a record of seven wins and one loss, the JV’s captured the Conference title in a rough District III 3A conference. Beginning the season with a bright outlook, the Baby Imps upset Northern Durham 14-6 and then followed with two successive victories over Chapel Hill and Hillsborough. Then a rainy game at Jordan dampened the teams chances for a perfect season, as they dropped the game by the score of 8-6. Getting back on the winning road the Imps downed the next four opponents handily, the last two being Roxboro and Garner which they beat by the scores of 19-0 and 33-6. Before those games, those teams had been involved in a three way tie for first place: but the victories left no doubt who the conference champion was. When victories become a habit of a team, a team of champions is definitely the result. This is the type of team that the Cary Junior Varsity was throughout the season. 81 Jimmy Allgood wrestles down a Chapel Hill runner as Mark Tanner (23). Cary’s Cross Country team enjoyed another banner year. They defeated opponent after opponent and very seldom ran into the face of defeat. Led by Mark Gaylord, the harriers got the season off to a good start and suffered no regu- lar season defeats. After a disappointing eleventh place finish in the Halifax County, Va. Invitational meet, they handily won the conference meet. Next the team finished a proud sec- ond in the Eastern Sectionals. Then at the state meet at Duke Univ., the Imps finished fourth, thus concluding a satisfying and rewarding season. The backbone of the distance runners were the seniors, but underclassmen showed much promise for the future. These underclassmen will give Coach Tom Kelly a nucleus to work with next year, and hopefully Cary will again be a top state title contender. 81) Varsity Basketball Team: First Row: Jeff Mason. The green clad Imps throw up a stiff defense against Roxboro. Contrary to pre-season forecasts, the CHS basketball team posted a very strong third place in the conference. The Imps ripped off five straight victories at the beginning of the season, but a vulnerability to pressing defenses dragged the Imps record to 8-3 at midseason. After three straight losses after midseason the Imps overcame the ball control problems and closed the season with five victories in the next six contests, thus earning a spot in the District playoffs. The Imps then took Vance 51- 48 in the first round and Roxboro 49-39 in the semifinal to face Garner in the finals. The cross-town rivals won with a 36- 30 margin. After downing a tough Hillsborough team, the Imps smashed cross-town rival Garner 73-42. The Imps posted four wins in the next seven games, before going into a three game losing streak. Snapping out of their dilemma, the Imps finished out the season in victorious style. This team should add much to the future success of Cary’s basketball program. The season was opened with a rousing 39-32 victory over Govenor Mo rehead, but next a tough Sanford team downed the Imps 37-31. The Imps won their next two outings with Roxboro, but also dropped two heartbrakers to Broughton and Sanford to even their record at three wins and three losses. The Imps then recovered closing out the season with eight straight wins to finish undefeated, in the conference. The wrestlers then finished only second in the conference tournament, and then several wrestlers went on and competed in the regional tournaments. Cary was represented in each match by five men who quali- fied from the team as a whole. These players were picked from the team in qualification rounds played at Pine Hollow Golf Course each week. The matches were played at courses near the home school every year. Golf is more of an individual effort for every man. Vance Heafner, Cary’s top medalist proved himself capable by becoming a well known golfer throughout the state. The team was composed of underclassmen who show much promise for the future. With several of last year’s lettermen returning and a crop of talented underclassmen, the team faced an unusually tough schedule of non-conference op- ponents and the always difficult conference games. The team was fortunate this year in having one of the strongest pitching staffs in the conference. This outstanding group was composed of several lettermen, who were mostly underclassmen. In addition to this, Cary has a fine hitting and fielding team. Compared to previous seasons, the year was a success for Coach Staley’s Imps. Despite overcrowding and confusion, all of the first year was not bad for them. They did an excellent job of selling candy with the entire class par- ticipating in this endeavor. In the strong class rivalry at CHS, the Sophomores proved themselves by demonstrating their spirit during School Spirit Week. Enthusiasm compensated for inexperience, and the Soph- omores won second place for their decoration of B building to the theme of The Second Trojan War”. Having been led by competent officers and supported by pride in their class, the Sophomores proved that they were beginning their high school careers in a successful manner. Truly the Class of 74 will add much to the quality of Cary High School. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS: left to right, sitting. Peggy Clark. Treasurer: Ted Williams. President: James Beckwith. In this transitional year, the Juniors were bombarded with a bewildering volley of tests. The first test taken was the PSAT-NMSQT, whose questions were even more perplexing than the title. The Class of 73 also took marathon mental maturity and achieve- ment tests. Some stout-hearted Juniors even took the SAT. Despite the confusion created by these tests, the Juniors had many successful projects. The traditional magazine sale exceeded all expectations, and thus the Juniors were able to fi- nance an excellent Junior- Senior Prom in the spring. The arrival of class rings also added to the spring excitement. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: from left to right. Lesa Lupo. Secretary: Sylvester Harrington. Prior to graduation, the Se- niors participated in various ac- tivities during the year. In the annual School Spirit Week. Seniors labored long hours on their first-place deco- ration of “D” building, the building in which the Class of 72 later placed the Senior Christmas Tree. In preparation for graduation, the Senior Class voted to have “We’ve Only Just Begun’’ as the class song, green and white as the colors, the white rose as the flower, and “Champion the right to be yourself . . as the class motto. The Class of 72 elected mascots in the spring to serve in graduation proceedings, thus leaving only practice to be completed prior to graduation.
