Abbertieemente jFnrehuirii The aspiration of the 1968 Annual Staff is to present to the students, administration, and faculty an overview of that which has occurred within a span of five years, as well 8s the many faults that go to make up life at George Washington Carver High. It Is the duty of the staff to select, describe, and illustrate the wonderful and unique experiences which will long be remembered and cherished in the hearts of all who glance back over these pages. Life at Carver is revealed through its people, a miscellaneous assortment of personalities—the brillant, the cheerful, the beautiful, the athletic, the leader, the popular, the radical, the successful, and all types. The staff hopes that this production will bring pleasure to those who view It. for we derived pleasure in trying to piece together a significant and interesting story of life with the “Trojans . The Annual Staff Bebttatton The 1968 Senior Class proudly and withdeep appreciation dedicates this volume to Mrs. Doris L. Robinson for her never-tiring willingness to help students—aca- demically and otherwise through her advising, her exemplification of professional competence, and her devoted dedication to Carver and education. She hails from Montgomery, Alabama. Her academic standings are as follows: She received a B. S. degree from Alabama State Teacher's College where she majored in Social Studies and English. Presently, she is serving as sponsor of the class of '68. To further the staffs dedication choice, we take these lines from Matthew Arnold's Rugby Chapel which are helpful, but still inadequate. If in the paths of the world Stones might have wounded thy feet, Toil or dejection have tried Thy spirit, or that we saw Nothing—to us thou wast still Cheerful, and helpful, and firm] Languor is not in your he an Weakness is not in your word. Weariness not on your brow. (£htWs Message On behalf of the 1968 Trojan annual staff, I take great pride and pleasure in expressing my deepest gratitude and appreciation for having been chosen to serve in the production and publication of this yearbook. In the years ahead, as you browse through this yearbook and relive the happy and ever lasting memories of schoolmates, teachers, and events that have highlighted your memories and desires to accomplish the worth- while things in life and to live up to the best that is within you. May your life echo the words of the prayer St. Francis of Assisi: Lord make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy; Oh, Divine Master, grant that I may seek not so much to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned. And it is in dying that we are bom to eternal life. Also I wish for you, all the success to which you are entitled, and all the happiness and pleasures that the life you live justifies. Keep looking up, out, and forward, life is just an employer who will pay no mftre than you earn! ✓ Vonnie M. Barnes Editor-in-Chief The period extending from September 1963 through June 1968 witnesses many occurrences which have a particular effect on the members of our class. We, the annual staff have worked toward portraying those phases which cannot be absolutely classed academic or highly intellectual—but phases which form a vital part of high school life. The day-by-day activities have been so arranged so that in later years as we reminisce, we can relive those exciting and rewarding days at Carver High. We hope that this volume presents these past years' phases in a manner that captures “that old Trojan Spirit which accompanies the students' endeavors to hold aloft that prized “torch of knowledge.” itcdLy Annice L. Enoch Co-Editor 3ln Menumam ARTHUR HILL JOHNSON There must be a reason we can’t see, There must be a reason why, A reason that we must take on faith, As we do the sun on high ... There must be an answer why it is Someone who enjoyed life so. Someone who is so dear to us. Suddenly has to go ... Life is a journey, so we are told. For some, long ... for others, brief, A journey on which we ail find joy Mingled with sadness and grief ... Try to remember the joy today. However hard it may be. And trust you'll find comfort When you know The reason you now can't see. Abministration mntentumt MR. GEORGE J. McINTOSH j$duu l IBoarii It is a pleasure for us to greet you, the members of the Class of 1968, as you approach your graduation. Although it will bring to an end our formal associations in school, there will be many very pleasant thoughts left with us as you move out to new and wider experiences. Now to you, it can be said. The real and important lessons for life are not those that are generally confined to textbooks. Nor do the real tests of life come during the prescribed two hour examination period. Your big lessons and your Important tests lie before you. How well will you be able to face the realities of life? We sincerely hope that your stay with us has helped to equip you with skills and attitudes necessary for an ever changing society. Not least among these we hope is a dedicat ion and commitment to the high ideals of integrity of character. As you move out toward the future with its uncertainties, seemingly there is a thought for the Class of 1968 in William Ernest Henley’s Invictus: ■ CXit of the night that covers me. Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not sinccd nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find me, unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my f8te; I am the captain of my soul. Again we extend the best wishes of our staff, student body, and entire community to the Class of 1968. Homer L Hines, Principal ff I MRS. PRIDE ©ffirs Staff MRS. SEDGEWICK MRS.
