IN APPRECIATION We, the members of the Class of 1966, wish to express our sincere appreciation to our principal, Mr. Homer L. Hines. During our stay at Carver High, he has given us his understanding, guidance, and friend- ship. We feel that Mr. Hines is outstanding not only in our school, but in other areas as well. Mr. Hines is a member of the Advisory Council on Admissions at New Y ork University, an ardent lover of music, and a very excellent photographer. Mr. Hines h as made our days at Carver High en- joyable and pleasant. We owe much to our principal, and we certainly appreciate his love and devotion. Activities and Organizations FOREWORD With the passing of time, men find it impossible to record every facet of life. So it is true, also, with our Annual. Though it is impossible to picture every aspect of our everyday experi- ences and activities, we have tried to portray with words and pic- tures our joyous moments of triumph and defeat, sadness and joy, inspiration and despair. For our readers, we hope this record of our climaxing year provides an interesting graphic illustration of our memorable days from the year 1965-66. EDITOR’S MESSAGE The finer moments of life can never be accredited to nor effort, described in one word, appreciated at one time, nor climaxed by one incident. It requires ac- cumulation of hundreds of humane acts, it can be described a thousand different times in as many ways, it can only be fully appreciated after being weighed against other moments, and it can never really reach its peak. Nor can such a moment be had without some hardship. The making of the ' 66 Trojan was not all pleasure. Much time and hard work went into its making. Here, I can only say that I hope its contents will hold as many fond memories for you as it does for me. I should like to thank all persons who helped in any way in its making. I can truly say that this has been an experience I shall cherish and remember for the re st of my life. Editor-in-Chief Annie Louise Williams Co-Editor Thursa D. Crittenden LIFE A T CAR VER To Mr. Elmo S. Davis, whose diligence and persistance have enabled us to reach the thres- hold of our lives. Through your continuous efforts, the doors of opportunity were opened to us. Through your constant encouragement, price- less experiences beyond the realm of these walls were made available to us. Through your never ceasing patience, our abil- ities, talents, and goals were realized. The dedication of this book portrays the es- teemed. position you hold in the hearts of us all; its pages, the accomplishments you made possible. To Mrs. Flora D. Crittenden, whose kindness, guidance, and understanding will always re- main a part of us. Our accomplishments were your triumphs, our problems your sorrow. Your wisdom guided us into mature individuals capable of meeting the challenges of the future. Your steadfast devotion to a job never done created a feeling of warmth and comfort to those in your presence. Your face will always remain that of a friend, your office a home. The appreciation expressed through this dedi- cation is symbolic of the entire class, each having been benefited by your influence. I’LL ALWAYS REMEMBER NAME: ADDRESS: PHONE: JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM ESCORT (Date): REMARKS: ADMINISTRA TION i MEMBERS: Mr. J. M. Dozier, Jr. Dr. W. T. Watkins, Jr. Dr. J. T. Jobe, III Mr. Richard Newman Mr. Gordon F. Pullen, Jr. Dr. C. Waldo Scott Mr. Ward R. Scull OUR SUPERINTENDENT, Mr. George J. McIntosh OUR PRINCIPAL Mr. Homer L. Hines To The Members Of The Class Of 1966: It is a pleasure for me to greet you on the eve of your graduation in your 1966 Trojan. Your graduation will climax many things that you have carefully preserved in your year- book. Graduation is not only important in relation to the school’s events that it concludes, but is also an important and memorable event for one’s whole career. We know that for you this marks the realization of a very fond hope and the fu lfillment of a great dream. You are now privileged to move beyond the formal experiences of the high school to the freedom and responsibilities that lie beyond. As you leave us, hope that you will keep your perspective and that you will acquire and maintain worthy goals in life. High school graduation should and must represent more than the accumulation of a re- quired number of academic or subject matter points. It should involve the acquisition of desirable and worthwhile attitudes toward life and also the ability to discriminate in one’s actions. It is in these qualities that we look for and expect excellence among our graduates. It is by these standards that you, the members of the Class of 1966 will be tested. We trust that your associations at Carver High School have strengthened you to the extent that you are able to face the future without fear. Those of us whom you will leave behind will have an abiding interest in each of you. On behalf of the students, the parents, the friends, and the teachers of Carver High School, we extend our congratulations on your graduation and our best wishes for the future. 4 ¥ ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. Elmo S. Davis MRS. JONES - Secretary OFFICE PERSONNEL MRS. GENERAL, Clerk MISS LEGGETT, Clerk MRS. LOMAX, Clerk GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT MRS. E. GOODE MRS. M. J. AUSTIN FACULTY What can be said to those who have helped, what words of thanks? How can we show our benevolence? The 1966 Graduating Class cannot sufficiently express what they wish to divulge in the common vernacular; emotion alone can say “We thank you”. Heavenly virtues of patience in times of trial, dedication to the task, and reverence for each student, your pupils, compliment for you our teach- ers OUR FACULTY Science seeks not to memorize but to discover, not to learn but to comprehend, and furthermore not to accept but to inquire. These are basic concepts drilled into the conscientious pupils of all grade levels now enrolled in our science classes. They possess the intellect to discover, comprehend and inquire and further make accurate conclu- sions thereby furthering and advancing the dome of man’s wisdom. MRS. J. D. HOLMES Chairman - Science Department It is of major importance that the mem- bers of our student body be well -acquainted with the language which is their means of daily communication; therefore, members of the English staff continuously emphasize the main divisions of our native language. In addition, students are given a knowledge of great literary works, as well as the styles and methods that they employ, and creativ- ity in writing on the part of the students is highly encouraged. Members of the mathematics staff, con- tinuously strive to open new horizons to stu- dents in the subdivisions of general mathe- matics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and advanced mathematics. The principles and concepts which they relate in detail to the Carver student body, not only prepare students for the demands they must meet in a society which grows continuously more technical, but enables them to explore more deeply this evergrowing field of science. It is of major importance that students are not only instilled with standard axioms and prin- ciples, but are inspired to seek the new, the unknown. MRS. E. CHRISTIAN Chairman - Mathematics Department An essential portion of the education of our students is provided by the foreign lan- guage department, which is composed of Spanish and French subdivisions. The dedi- cated teachers of this field (Miss E. Jones, Mrs. K. Brown, Mr. W. Roseboro) seek to acquaint students, not only with the conver- sational and written language, but with the history and culture of its origin country as well. In the newly added language laboratory, students become associated with the standard dialect of French or Spanish as it is spoken by its respective countrymen, thus develop- ing fluency in speaking. MISS E. JONES Chairman - Foreign Language Plagued on all fronts by torments of chaos in the forms of hate, distrust, unscrupulous living, and the zenith of destructive force, in war, America must remain cognizant and of her roles, and position, and responsibility, as are set forth in U. S. Government, Ameri- can and World History courses offered in our institution. These classes remain the prime source of all pertinent information expected of informed students. MR. N. JONES Chairman - Social Studies Physical fitness is a demand of our time. A strong body contributes to a strong mind. The purpose of our Physical Education and Health Department is to develop recreational skills and make a direct contribution to our education. MR. W. B. COLEMAN Chairman - Health and Phys. Ed. Dept. In our industrial arts classes we endeavor to train the hands as well as the mind. With- in the walls of the industrial arts building, boys are learning to make a piece of wood or leather come alive and take form. These men may build our roads and construct our bridges. No matter how large or small the jobs, their task is important for themselves as well as others. MR. WALTER DAVENPORT Chairman - Industrial Arts The Home Economics Department of G. W. Carver High School seeks unity of mankind working through the basic social unit, the home and family. Their ideals are exemplified and manifested in their doc trines of love, kindness, purity, as are all taught within the American family. The young ladies of our school shall be forever benefited by the principles inscribed in their hearts by so worthy a profession as home- making. MRS. MARGARET S. JONES Chairman - Home Economics Department The Music Department of G. W. Carver High School seeks to instill a true sense of appreciation in its student body. This task has been fulfilled through numerous excur- sions to area concerts to hear the finest or- chestral productions and vocalists possible. The beauty of sound and purity of listen- ing pleasure have immeasurably consum- mated the ultimate of cultural achievement with the Carver student body. MRS. MARGARET P. DAVIS Chairman - Music Department The Art subdivision seeks to emphasize not only the components of neo-classical tradition but also creativity in pop art . The instructors broaden their spectrum of the lively arts to extend into its every phase: that of abstract, molding, sculpture, and even into non-objective painting. Contrary to the belief of the artist as an isolated breed apart from the world of reality, our gifted proteges have sought unity with their school and in analysis have accomplished breaking the barrier of ignorance once en- gulfing his image. Entertaining displays of their works hang in our corridors as a con- stant reminder of this new man, the artist. MR. W. ROLLINS Chairman - Arts Department MR. THEODORE B. DeGROAT Chairman - Commercial Department Big business based upon a system of free private enterprise underlies the American economy. Likewise, the commerce of America, tied in with her democracy in labor and management relations which builds such a system as mentioned, is supported by those who endeavor to strengthen her eco- nomic state in fields of commerce, business, administration, and secretarial work. The G. W. Carver Commercial Department has widened new horizons for our students, there- by giving them a share in the history of greatness and prestige America now holds. Our Library has always been a site of concentrated and proper study, of diligent research on every and all fields. Eager students utilize its facilities now more than ever as a pledge to the intelli- gence of American youth and their ample abilities to recognize the necessity of true study. MRS. JULIA J. Under the direction of Mrs. Ruffin and Mr. Thomas, the editors planned and laid out this TROJAN hoping that it would be the best in Trojan History. For us, there were moments of glad- ness as well as despair. We extend great thanks to all persons who had a part in its compiling and completion. Annie Williams, Editor Thursa Crittenden, Co- Editor STAFF ADVERTISING STAFF The members of the Annual Staff give special recognition to the Advertising Staff, who worked very hard soliciting ads for our Annual. To Mr. P. M. Thomas, we also extend thanks for his assistance and advice. I feel that the ‘65 season was not one to be ashamed of, but a good lesson in life. Graduating are twenty-two seniors, who have given their hearts, and I know if they prepare for life as they have prepared for football, I will have no fear of their ensuing success. COACH’S MESSAGE In Pre-season talks with my assistant, we concluded that this would be a chal- lenging and eventful year. To date our predictions have been almost to the line. This group of boys is an exact replica of Trojan teams of the past years. These boys have the necessary desire and conduct on and off the floor, which we think are the prerequisites of a sound team. It is unwise to make predictions at this time. However, the team has been playing the type of ball that will put the team near the top in the final standings. Left; Leading Trojan scorer eyes goal. Bottom: Johnson makes a good move. Upper Left: Johnson displays pro- fessional action. Upper Right; Knight hooks for two points. Lower Left; Johnson rebounds over opponents. Lower Right; Thornton shoots on the jump. In action against Bruton Heights - Alvin Banks and Joseph Singleton Also in action against the Spiders are William Johnson and Banks Taylor hits two from the corner.
