May we think of the years spent at George Washington Carver High School as the initial period in this preparation for the opportunities that lie before us. Through desires, necessities, efforts, and hope, we obtained inspiration which together with the many hours we ' ve sacrificed, totaled up to the pleasure of presenting this yearbook. Each page is designed to unfold an unfor¬ gettable collection of memories which we hope you will cherish forever. Let me hasten humbly and sincerely to offer my warmest congratulations and commendations for this sus¬ tained, completed endeavor. However, the real test of your accomplish¬ ment would be the challenge you have for con¬ tinuing growth and development through the use of attitudes and tools attained under our auspices. Therefore, as you eagerly prepare to depart in your several directions, we, the other teachers and I, wish you success and God ' s blessings. I remain, Sincerely yours, Nathan E. Vaguely I see a city. Could that be a hospital? Yes, I can see clearly the nurses moving speed¬ ily in halls. Among them are; Phyllis Dodson, Mary Cooke, Dorothy Niblette, Faye Penn, Rosa Carter, Betty Dennis, Lucy Brimmer, Rubena Hairston, Imogene Shelton, Amanda Ross, and Lillie Walker. The hospital slowly fades away. Is that an office building coming into view? It must be because I can see people working behind desks. The private secretaries include Arnette Stockton, Marian Hairston, Barbara Wray, Nancy Morrison, Louise Redd, Celia Fuller, and Joan Hylton. Stenographer: Mary Martin; Accountant, Charles Preston. The office building gradually disappears. But lo! another appears. I can focus a school --two to be precise, elementary and high. Trying hard to control their temper in the elementary division, I see Ira Johnson, Ollie Flood, Sarah Ed¬ wards, Mary V. Hairston and Mildred Price. In the physical education department of the high school, I see Leonard Shelton, Jesse Dillard, Charles Terry, Rose Millner, and Mary L. Hairston; Home Economics, Ophelia Gilbert, Dorothy Martin and Mary Ingram; Industrial Arts, Thomas Manns; Agriculture, Claude Millner; History, Lardenia Pritchette and Detroit Hairston; Speech and Dramatics, Nancy Richardson ; Mathematicians; Obie Gravely and Doretha Small. I can focus a courtroom scene where Perry Mason has met his competitors. Lawyers: Larry Carter, Aaron Rey¬ nolds, and James Hall are succeeding as they take turns winning their cases. Moving on down Main Street, I see office entrances bearing the name of the following: Psychiatrists, Edward Powers and Cordell Cahill; Speech Therapist, Helen Koger; Brickmasons, Ellis Hairston, Abe Martin. Robert Staples, Jesse Gilbert, Willie Stanley, and Willard Hairston. On the other end of the street, I see shops being operated by the Cosmotologist, Lois Hariston; Beauticians, Mary Hunt, Mary A. Manns, Lizzie Dillard, Dorothy Lampkins, Leatrice Draper, Doretha Penn, Bernice Clark, Delois Stockton, Linda Hairston, and Nancy Penn; Models, Katherine Easley, Annie Smith, and Claudine Shelton; Barbers, Roy Hailey and John Wade; Mortician, Albert Brimmer. In the Art Gallery, beside the painting of Mona Lisa, are other famous paintings by Herman Moore and Everette Jones on display. Beside the Gallery is a building being constructed by James Carter. Gazing a little farther, I see on the athletic field, William Spencer, Roy Kellam, Joseph Nib- lett, Johnny Herford, James Marshall, Stafford Hayes, Leon Largin and Harvey Penn. In the Re¬ search Building working is the great scientist, Frank Smith; Chemist, Leth Hairston. Waiting to be interviewed in the Army Service office are; Jesse Manns, Albert Dillard, Henry Hairston; Marines, James Dillard. At the city Auto Repair Shop, I see the mechanics hard working. Among them are: Larry Pritchette, James Hayes, Eugene Taylor, Hayes Hall, Sherman Gravley, William Hair¬ ston, Jim Martin, Robert Staples, Wendell Manns, Thomas Brown, Dwight Hall and Joseph Wade. Down at the Airport, I see Airline Hostesses, Geneva Gallaway, Jessie Lunnerman, and Ruth Hair¬ ston. Electrical Engineers: Elbert Shelton, Paris Carter, Leon Gamble, William Redd, and David Evans. Civil Engineers: Howard Baker, Anthony Schoolfield, and Theodore Foster. Completing the new house is Gloria Carter, the interior decorator. V ' . .flirts Last, but not least, on entertainment hall is visualized where a concert is being staged featur¬ ing singer, Helen Ross. 29 Dear Carver, the time has come for us to part But delicate memories will linger in our hearts. You are one who will never be put aside, But always remembered as our tender guide. As we travel the golden road to fame We will always cherish your great name, you have bravely stood by us and held our hands, And encouraged us to face defeats and demands. As time passes we will always look back to you As one who has helped to see us through. When we reach the goal our hearts desire, Our success you will have made possible, Dear Carver High By Ira Jane Johnson ' 63 President---Doretha Small Vice President---Charles Preston Secretary-—Linda Hairston Asst.
