The cos- tumes for that day included witches, clowns, and punk rockers. The next day was Tacky Day. Students certainly were in fashion with their striped socks and plaid pants. Old age creeped into the week as Senior Citizens’ Day approached. This day enabled students to foresee their features in the future. Finally on Wednesday, the students went back to their normal attire with Klassy Kat Day. Dresses and suits looked like the apparrel for that day. On Black Thursday, the Greenwave’s funeral services were held before school. Tigers mourned throughout the day. The body was viewed between 8:00 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. in the lobby. At 5:30 p.m. the Greenwave’s body was exhibited in the parade, and afterwards cremated in the bonfire. On the Spirit Day. the Tigers showed their true colors wearing flashing red and cool blue. We were to burn up the Green- waves that night with our school spirit. 14 STUDENT LIFE STUDENT LIFE 15 Eat ’Em Up Tigers! This year school spirit ran high. The pep rallies showed effort and imagination. The Seniors worked up unique ways to show their class unity and support for the Tigers. In one pep rally the Seniors armed themselves with spoons and shout- ed Eat 'em up. Tigersl eat 'em up!” The Freshman class exper- ienced a pep rally spirit competi- tion win — the first Freshman class to do so in three years when this year's Senior Class were Freshmen. The band and the athletic teams showed that hard work pays. The pep rallies rocked with the school's fight song. Darrin Bettis, the school’s 1981-82 mascot, flipped his way across the gym floor. The Tigers were on the move. 16 STUDENI LIFE STUDENT LIFE 17 Beware Of Tiger Country! Here Today and Gone Tomorrow Styles are constantly changing in the world, and it’s no different here at Carver. In many class- rooms, you see students trying their luck with the puzzling Rubik's Cube — three billion combinations and only one solution. Peers are in such designer jean styles as Calvin Klein, Jordache, and Chic. No shirts are as popular as Izods and button-down oxford shirts came back in style paired with Cheeno pants for the preppy look. The shoes that were popular this year were loafers, pumps, docksides, nikes, and other types of sport shoes. You may have thought that you were in a war area with all the camouflauge suits that students have been wearing this year. This fad is most popular with students at Carver. Without the excitement of friends, school would be just another boring chore. Friends help you to help yourself as well as others. True friends may go through their ups and downs, but they somehow manage to last when they keep a short memory of the painful times and a long memory of the good ones. In order to do this each Senior had the opportunity of selling partrons. After selling ten their picture would be featured in the Tigonian. In the traditional way the Sen- iors will be having all the activities such as Senior Teach Day, Senior Breakfast and of course Kiddie Day — our last chance as Seniors to let our silliness hang out. It prepares them for full-time employment in office or office related jobs. It is a three part program, class- room, on the job training and indi- vidual. Classroom instruction pro- vides an opportunity to develop desirable personal qualities, traits, and attitudes. On the job training is a big part of the program. The instructor will assist you in finding a job, if you do not have one. The students receive training from this class which helps them learn the trades they will need to know. The program is very educational and helps students prepare for the future. Their club, FBLA, sold Halloween Grams as one of their many activi- ties. C PCT ) DCT which stands for Diversi- fied Cooperative Training, is a work program offered by the school system for students who have jobs and are interested in en- rolling in the program. You receive two credits for DCT. One for classroom work and the other for working. In order to receive one full credit for working you must complete 500 hours on the job for one year. If you enter the DCT program, and do not have a job, the DCT coordinator will help you find a job. Keeping re- cords, time sheets, filling out in- cofne taxes, and anything else having to do with working or fu- ture careers is taught in DCT. You learn to take on responsibilities and learn new job training skills. Senior Dearick Milton says that DCT is a valuable learning exper- ience. He works at WRBL Song in My Heart Production. What is it like to be on the de- bate team? Sharon Hightower says that she was nervous at her first debate. She stated that the debate team decides on a specific topic from a general list that they are given by the group in charge of debate competition. Then the team has to read and do research on the topic. At the actual debate Sharon says that you have to be able to think off of the top of your head while sounding convincing at the same time. Drama The 1981-82 Carver High Drama Club and class is sponsored by Ms. Gunter. She says that teaching drama is very exciting and at times can get very hectic. Their itinerary consisted of: performing for the second graders at Carver Elementary: performing the play Soul Gone Home by Lang- ston Hughes for the school: par- ticipating in the literary meet in Americus Ga where they per- formed in Soul Gone Home as well as presenting a number of short plays for the ninth grade English classes. Held out of town this year, the band worked twelve and fourteen hours a day and came back to Columbus with a half-time show for the Tiger ball games. The first half-time show was nerve wracking to some of the new members of the marching band and was performed in the rain in the game against Baker. Carver’s band has received awards of excel- lence in band, two superior drum line awards, and two superior flag awards. In addition the band had played at pep rallies where they had the enthusiastic support of the student body. The band played the song Celebration” to end the last pep rally in cele- bration of Carver’s successful football season. The band also presented a Christmas concert for the public and continued its new tradition of forming a jazz band. Concert season included two competi- tions — in Columbus and in Alexander City. Alabama. Freshman Fletcher Armstrong, a drummer, for the band says that being in the band is fun although his drum does sometimes get heavy. Herman is a Senior this year and will be leaving Carver. The big- gest problem we face is losing Her- man and starting over again,” Coach Floyd replied. Southwest In the first game of the Tigers ’81 campaign they opened up against the Southwest-Macon Patriots in Ma- con. The Pat’s scored first on an ear- ly TD then came back to add a field goal for an 11-0 lead. With Herman Archie ( 81) in for the injured start- ing quarterback Kenneth Melvin ( 11) the Tigers scored on a 36-yard TD pass from Archie to Nathaniel Odomes ( 14) to cut the deficit to II- 6. The Patriots held on to win 11-6. Carver Vs. Baker The night was wet and gloomy as the Tigers suited up to face the Lions. First time quarterback Na- thaniel Odomes led the Tigers. The Lions got the lone score of the game on a field goal. The Tigers were de- nied a scoring opportunity late in the game on a controversial call in the end zone on a pass play. The defense played superbly. The offense never found the right combination and Ba- ker held on 3-0. lOO FOOIBAll Carver Vs. Kendrick The third game of the season pitted the Tigers against the Cherokees. The Tigers took the first half on a 25-yard TD run by Bobby Taylor ( 1). Carl Jordan ( 21) added a two-point conver- sion and the half ended with the Tigers on top 8-0. In the second half Vincent Bell ( 2) excited the crowd when he picked up a fumble and fought his way 38-yards to the end zone. Rivera ( 15) added the extra point and the Tigers went on to win 15-6. The fourth game of the season found the Tigers teeing it up against the Hawks. The Tigers were fired up and took the open- ing kick-off and were marching down the field to an apparent touchdown, but a fumble ended the drive and also dampened the Tigers’ spirits. After that. Carver never fully got it together again and ended up on the losing end of a 24-0 score. FOOTBALL 101 Carver vs. Central Macon The Tigers entered the game with hopes of a big upset. The Chargers, touting the leading rusher in the re- gion, scored first and added another score to make it 14-0. The Tigers then countered on a 2-yard run by Bobby Taylor ( 1), to make it 14-6. Then Harry Ikner ( 10) picked a fum- ble out of mid-air and raced 10-yards for the Tigers’ final score of the game making it 14-14. The Chargers went on to win 41-14. Carver Vs. Columbus If ever a team was fired up to play, Carver was that team against the Blue Devils. Carver wasted no time scoring 21 first-half unanswered points. In the second half the Blue Devils managed to get 21-points on a stingy Tiger defense which sent the game into overtime. Odomes sneaked through the middle for the winning T.D. after a James Easley ( 7) interception stopped the Blue Devils. 103 FOOTBALL Carver vs. Opelika After a week off, the Tigers played the Bulldogs on their home turf. The Tigers wasted no time in silencing the near capacity Ope- lika crowd as long runs by Kelvin Brown ( 9), and then a touch- down by Richard Jordan ( 21) to make the score 7-0 Tigers. Carver scored again in the second half on a 43-yard quarterback sneak by Nathaniel Odomes ( 14). Opelika came back to score a touchdown late in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers held on to a 14-6 victory. Carver vs. Shaw In a hard fought battle the Ti- gers again walked away as victors in a game that featured tough, hard-hitting defense. The lone score of the game came on a 10- yard run by Bobby Taylor ( 1) late in the fourth quarter. Taylor fin- ished the night with 156 yards on 35 carries. The entire defense did an outstanding job in limiting Shaw to only 4 first downs. The final score was Tigers 6 and Raiders 0. FOOTBALL 103 Carver Vs. Jordan After two straight victories over Shaw and Opelika the Tigers were geared up to face the Jordan Red Jackets. The game was an awesome display of offense and one of equal brilliance on defense. The Tigers first score came on a 7-yard run by Quarterback Nate Odomes ( 14). Al- bert Rivera’s ( 15) point after made it 7-0. Herman Archie’s ( 81) punt return of 13-yards set up a 30-yard drive that ended with a l-yard TD run by Bobby Taylor ( 1) and Rivera made it 14-0. Carver then scored on a 74-yard TD romp by Taylor. Rivera's PAT maae it 21-0. The Tigers scored 19 more points in the 4th quarter. McCormick substituting in for Tay- lor did most of the damage on a 51- yard drive with Odomes sneaking over from 3-yards out. On the ensu- ing kickoff Mike Forte ( 4) recov- ered a fumble at the Jordan 25 and later Carl Jordan ( 21) took it over from 4 yards out. Then Archie ended the scoring on a 17-yard pass from Odomes for a 40-0 lead. Jordan scored in the final minutes to make the final score 40-6. 104 FOOTBALl Carver Vs. Spencer Homecoming was the name and Football was the game as the Ti- gers took the field against the Greenwaves. The Tigers wasted no time in scoring on theirs first possession on a 15-yard run by Bobby Taylor ( 1) to make it 6-0. Then Spencer got their only points on a field goal to make the score 6- 3. Then Taylor scored on a 2-yard run for a 12-3 lead and again from 5- yards out for an 18-3 Tiger lead at the half. The Tigers added two more scores in the second half, one on a 6-yard run by Carl Jordan ( 21) and the other one on a 4- yard run by Joe McCormick ( 38) with extra points added by Albert Rivera ( 15) for a sweet home- coming victory of 31-3. The victo- ry ended the Tigers season with a 6- 4 record and a share of second place with Baker, the best a Carv- er High football team has finished since the late ’60’s. The ’81 campaign for the Tigers was the best in modern Tiger history. They compiled a 6-4 record while defeating some of the best teams in the region. Led by Coach Wallace Davis, Carver started with one of the most potent offensive attacks in the city. But when Kenny Melvin went down, the Tigers showed pride and dignity as Nate Odomes took control and led the Tigers into a run for the playoffs. The defense for the Tigers was one of the best ever. They were led by superior people such as Frank Graham, Tony Covington, Rodrick Moore, Butch Ikner, Jerry Porter, Vincent Bell, and David Parham, along wih Jeff Lee and Myron Strange. Even though the Tigers did not make the playoffs, they were in the running until the last possible moment. Herman Archie was named The Player of the Year.” He has played four different positions and numerous special teams. Bobby Taylor made All Bi-City along with Roderick Moore and Frank Graham. Football is a team sport and the ’81 Tigers showed that no matter what the odds a team can succeed if you work at it. fOOTBAll 105 Freshmen I think we had outstanding coaches. They stuck with us through thick and thin. They began the season on a good note with an opening day victory over Spencer 48-14, and ended it on a good note with an 8-6 victory over Baker. ”1 was disappoint- ed in the overall outcome of our season’s record of 2-4. There were some fine athletes on the team, and I hope they will go on to help the varsity football team next year.” Coach Williams 106 FOOTBAll Players’ Comments It wasn’t really all that we anticipated but it was a great experience. Herman Archie It was really exciting, we played hard and reaped great rewards this season.” Percy Forde This season has taught me a great lesson about life.” David Parham We had a great season, but if we had not had some injuries we could have done better. Frank Graham We had a good season. I’m looking forward to an even better season next year. Dave Smith I think we had the talent to go to the play-offs. Although we lost many Seniors. I think the Junior talent will take up that loss. Garland Glover FOOTBALL 107 Softball Mrs. Lindsey Look Here! The lady Tigers started practice in the latter part of August running laps, practicing on their curves, and stealing bases in order to make the year 81-82 Carver's best. The season for the girls softball team was not as prosperous as it was thought to have been but with the enthusiasm and support from Mrs. Lindsey and their trainer Mr. Clayton Bell, the girls ended the season 3-14. Their coach, Mrs. Lindsey, feels that her girls played to the best of their ability and re- gardless of the outcome the Tigers played extremely well. Kneeling: Alesia Pines. Maurice Griffin. We're grown enough now to go out into the world. Yet we hesitate. Gone through the stages of toy guns, tea sets, water balloons, toy trucks and tricycyles Big enough now to drive a car, have real guns, a Goodyear blimp and a bicycle. We once thought that only the adults knew all the tricks and games. But as life went on we realized that life isn’t easy and adults still learn just the same. We crack jokes and laugh at the fat face with the low haircuts and pigtails that played in Mom’s flour. Now we realize that you can’t learn about life in just one hour and that our education won't ever really end. We share memories with our friends while coming to the crossroads of our life. We seek for a successful world to settle in and a husband or wife with which to travel. Since time is precious, allow yourselves time to cultivate and enjoy your dreams because the more you dream of doing, the more you can do. The theme for this year’s yearbook was only appropriate since our activities during this year have proven to be a dream come true. Unlike the mishaps that were forced upon last year's staff, the members of the 1981-82 Tigonian staff began early so that you would receive a better book. Many changes took place during a short period of time, but it proved worthwhile in the end since we were able to award you with a superb yearbook. We were fortunate to attain such a reliable staff and much thanks has to be given to Djuana Dorsey who wrote the lines to our theme noem and lia Owens who enabled us to have not only an original but creative yearbook. Since our goals were never short in length we over came the obstacles put before us and proved that if one works diligently he or she may always reach their dreams.
