Text from Pages 1 - 216 of the 1981 volume:

1981 Tigonian Carver High School Columbus, Georgia Within each and every Carver Tiger, there exists a special feeling This feeling, combined with the charac- ter and determination found in every student at our dI, forms the basis for success. Carver High School and the graduating class of 11 have been successful In many ways, but it was ■ way that each and every Tiger pitched in to better elves and their environment that exemplified the found in all of us. course, we had our share of difficulties, but 3ether we overcame the obstacles that stood be- us and our objectives BECAUSE OF OUR ENTHUSIASM V 6 LOYALTY 22 A SALUTE PADDLE YOUR OWN CANOE Voyager upon life’s sea, To yourself be true; And where’er your lot may be, Paddle your own canoe. Never, though the winds may rave, Falter nor look back, But upon the darkest wave Leave a shining track. Nobly dare the wildest storm, Stem the hardest gale. Brave of heart and strong of arm You will never fail. When the world is cold and dark, Keep an end in view. And toward the beacon mark Paddle your own canoe. Nothing great is lightly won, Nothing won is lost- Every good deed nobly done. Will repay the cost; Leave to Heaven, in humble trust All you will to do; but if you succeed, you must Paddle your own canoe. Sarah K. Bolton TO THE SENIORS For yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow is only a vision but today well lived makes yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. -AUTHOR UNKNOWN 4 . We have left behind the short breeches, the full and fancy dresses, and the crazy hair bows. We have left behind our tricycles, our toy guns, and our tea sets. Gone forever are those innocent smiles and wide eyes that had not seen the ugliness of our world. Today we may laugh with embarrassment as our friends discover that the fat face with pigtails is ours. Now the boy with the cigarette in his mouth and the girl modeling the hair dryer bonnet are no more. Yet, they still are. Each one carries within himself those memories of an uncomplicated and fun life where it was thought that grownups knew all the answers. Now we know that life is not so simple and that adults, too, continue to grow. As we come to a crossroad in our life, we share memories with our friends. Just who are all of those strange faces below? Look carefully at the pictures. Stare at your friends. What then? Guess, of course. If you finally give up, turn to page 200 for the hidden identities. 195 AT GRADUATING TIME The graduates are going forth- God bless them every one!- To run this hard and stubborn world Just as it should be run; But much I fear they’ll find that facts Don’t always track with dreams; And running this old world is not As easy as it seems. The graduate is prone to think His wisdom is complete. He’ but to ask-the world will lay Its trophies at his feet. But school days done and work begun. He learns to his regret The college of experience He has not mastered yet. The world has garlands and applause At graduating time; But may forget him the next day When he attempts to climb. Life is a battle where each one Must seek and hold his own. He who would rise above the clouds Must scale the heights alone. This is the rule of life today, As it has ever been: The world bestows its smile on those Who have the strength to win. Beneath all outward semblances It looks for merit true. Industrial Arts Gub 12. 199 March 9, 1981 To The 1980-81 Student Body and Faculty of Carver High School: This has been a very long and difficult year for the Tigonian staff and we have had many problems throughout the course of publishing a yearbook that the student body and faculty would be proud of. Our first problem was that we did not have a reliable, hard-working sponsor. This changed when Miss Lucas came to us and voluntered to support us in any way possible. We thought our problems were solved, but more surprises awaited us. Among the other problems we had was the fairly new group of “rookies” on the staff and the early financial problems stemming from the lack of yearbook sales and business ads. Because of the student body, we realize that this yearbook could not have been possible and we really appreciate the support you have given us. We believe, however, that the person who is most responsible for this edition of the Tigonian is Miss Angela Lucas. She spent time not only during her classes but also at home working to meet deadlines and to make sure that everything was done correctly. We want her to know that we appreciate it from the bottom of our hearts. We will end this letter to you by thanking you again for helping us and supporting our cause. To next year’s staff, we can only say “good luck and best wishes.” Sincerely yours, Colette Williams, Editor Yvonne Ehrhart, Co-Editor 1980-81 Tigonian P.S. Miss Lucas, it LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT! The drudge may fret and tinker Or labor with lusty blows, But back of him stands the Thinker, The clear-eyed man who knows; For into each plow or saber, Each piece and part and whole. Must go the brains of Labor Which gives the work a soul! Back of the motors humming. Back of the bells that sing. Back of the hammers drumming, Back of the cranes that swing, There is the eye which scans them Watching through stress and strain, There is the Mind which plans them- Back of the brawn, the Brain! Might of the roaring boiler, Force of the engine’s thrust, Strength of the sweating toiler- Greatly in these we trust. But back of them stands the Schemer, The Thinker who drives things through; Back of the Job-the Dreamer Who’s making the dream come true! -Berton Braley “The Dream” has come true for many students this year as the graduating class of 1981 finds itself on the threshold of completing yet another step in the endless cycle of learning.
