Statewide Contest Won By Carver High Student Gov. Jimmy Carter named 17-year old Jenette Marshall of Carver High School of Columbus as winner of the 1971 Ability Countys Survey Contest, sponsored jointly by the President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped and the Georgia Governors Committee on Employment of the Handi- capped. In making the announcement, the govern- ors said, Miss Marshall's survey on the 1971 contest theme, 'Employment of the Handi- capped: Community Attitudes', showed a great deal of insight and personal concern for our state's handicapped citizens, a concern I feel strongly myself. As the state's first place winner, Miss Marshall will receive $100 plus a three-day all expense paid trip to Washington to attend the annual President's committee meeting on employment of the handicapped. Southern Bell sponsored an awards lunch- eon for the winning students and their teach- ers and principals held at the Governor's Man- sion on April 8. H. E. Van Ordcn, executive secretary of the Governor's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped, said that the competition in this year's contest was extremely keen as more high schools participated than in any previous year. The Ability Counts Contest is for juniors and seniors in public and private high schools. To participate in the contest students must write an original report that docs not axcccd 750 words, talk to local agencies involved in work relating to employment of the handi- capped citizens living in their communities. These intelligent persons try to better the society. They try to ameliorate problems instead of aiding them. They strive for a better life for all and not for some. This is what ALL should strive to do.
