The Tigonian is produced annually by the graduating class of that year, and we, the graduates of ’67, sincerely hope that this years Tigonian sur- passes all others in being truly unique. The Rani of Avon, Shakespeare, wrote in All’s Well That Ends Well All the ivorltf s a stage, And all the men and women Merely players: They have their exits And entrances; And one man in his time Plays many parts, . . . During our years at Carver High, we have played upon the stage in the great drama called “Life.” As our performances are evaluated, what will he the judgment of the critics? Have we been stars, have we played the supporting roles, or have we merely played a walk-on part? Look hack with us upon the scenes we have played and evaluate our acting as we review the year 1966-1967. 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS Administrators ................... 16 Counselors........................ 20 Faculty .......................... 21 Administrative Personnel ......... 29 THE ADMINISTRATION iw ENTRANCE TO ACADEMIC BUILDING ENTRANCE TO GYMNATORIUM INSIDE VIEW OF GYMNATORIUM CAFETERIA NIGHT VIEW OF ACADEMIC BUILDING This building contains the AUDITORIUM, ROTC FACILITIES, MUSIC DEPARTMENT, AND ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT. HABERSHAM 32 THE DRAMA OF A GREAT CLASS Setting: Carver High Opera House In September of 1963, the “Curtain of Time” was about to open on the Tigonian Stage. A drama was about to be presented which would have a great impact on each actor and actress who sought stardom in this production. The stage hands were anxious, and preparing in every way to make our production a successful one. Our producer, William Green, knew that he had an efficient staff with people like Pierre Lewis, Barbara Houston, Phyllis Evans, and Winston McGruder to assist him. The lights went out one by one, and everyone knew that soon the show would begin. Sitting backstage waiting for the curtain call, some of the stars engaged in several activities to pass the time away. Many of them thought it very important to read and study their script as much as they could and absorb as much knowledge about this com- ing production as possible. This was a wise beginning, for as a result of their quest for knowledge, their names appeared on the theater’s Honor Roll. No, there wasn’t a boring moment on the Tigonian Stage. How could there be when Helen Marshall and Izora Kindred were given special awards for their outstanding per- formance in cheerleading? Their energy and spirit were demonstrated when the curtain opened on Act I, scene 9. In this scene every athlete had to prove himself, and he did. Charles Jackson, Wilbur Booth, Lawrence Walker, Jimmy Smith, Tommy James, Al- vesta Lamb, Felix Walton, Carman Pitts, and Willie Moore, clad in their football uni- forms, trampled one by one across that stage with an air of victory accompanying them. A yell of “Two points” was heard. Everyone knew then that Edgar Scott, William Green, and Willie Broderick were somewhere displaying their agility in basketball. Though track has a very short season, Robert Thompson would never let us for- get when the season came around. It was onlv during this era in motion picture and thea- trical production that such fit athletes were introduced—especially a 3 letter man like Cecil Hood. The drama was long. Many of the participants grew weary and decided to travel no further. Some decided to let other theaters handle their climb to stardom. Some were Val- nita Morris, who reigned as our beautiful and graceful Queen and Francesta Farmer, whose brilliantly constructed science project deemed her an award in that field. Sandra Battle, Marcelyne Bryant, Clara Egins, and Phyllis Evans were all a part of us, and we’ll never forget them. In the fall of 1964, the cast elected a new director, Barbara Houston, and continued casting. The time soon neared for Act I Scene 10, “Achievement.” During this scene, many rested. Others could not relax until their names appeared in the annals of the theat- ers history. Marcus Turner, Iris Robinson, Betty Owens, Linda Johnson, Barbara Hous- ton, and Harold Hudson were nominated to the Governor’s Honor Program, while Shar- on Crittenden and Robert Wilder were participants in the program at Wesleyn College in the summer of 1965. Izora Kindred was selected as our news reporter. Other great achievers were Clementine Alexander and Raymond Lakes. We had many Academy Award winners among us. As the curtain was pulled for Act I, Scene II, Agnes Buckner and Otis Weaver sang melodiouslv. Many times we were entertained with trumpet solos by Robert Wilder and Harold Hudson and beautiful twirling routines by Carolyn Blackmon and Barbara Houston, two great majorettes. Surely beauty was among us, because Ruby Gardner and Carolyn Blackmon were at one time attendants of Miss Carver’s Royal Court. A call was heard — “Everyone prepare yourselves for Act I, Scene 12, Commence- ment !” How long we had waited and yearned to hear this call! To some of us it was a re- lief; to others it was the sight of the end of a long, hard production. And yet, to others, it was a beginning. They felt that though they had played in many roles, more still lay ahead. After the act, all the stars were summoned for a last curtain call. As they took their last bow, they thought of the hardships that had been endured to make the show a suc- cess. Sure it was hard, but we made it! As the curtain began to close, we looked out into the audience who were now on their feet applauding as loudly as they could. We saw our mothers, fathers, teachers, and principles. We listened closely to their applause, for it seemed to have had a message for us: “Life is the mirror of kings and slaves And here s what each of you should do: Give to the world the best that you have. And the best will come back to you. By Barbara Houston CLASS POEM T’was the month of graduation and all down the hall. We Seniors were most gay, the happiest of all. We had our young futures; we planned with great care. And hoped that June second, would soon meet us there. Some huddled in bunches, in groups, and in pairs To measure those plans of others with theirs. Some will be doctors; this you’ll discover, Some will be nurses, typists, and mothers. And now that June second is drawing so near. We Seniors are feeling we haven’t a care. We requested our privileges as others did. And when they were granted, our hearts felt so big. All Seniors can rate special freedom at last. And now as we gather out front on the grass. We’ll leave, as you know, and all will be sad. But the dear little Juniors will really be glad. We’ve reached this first goal of success at last. By continous struggle and going to class. The principal and teachers have helped each of us; They’ll do it for you without any fuss. And now as we leave dear old Carver High. We caution each one of you to------------- “Reach for the sky!’’ By Roosevelt Foster CLASS SONG (Tune: “More”) Now that the year is here to say goodbye. And we commence this year, dear Carver High Going to fulfill our future hopes and goals. Sixty-seven Class, we have our roles. Carver, we love you. and we’ll love you forever, and we’ll Never forget you, goodbye. Parents, who have loved us very dear. And when our path was gloom you made it clear. But when we thought we’d never make it nigh. Teachers, you were the forces in our strive. Carver, we’re leaving, and we’ll never forget. Juniors, hold our standards high. To our principal who made us know We have our chances if we pray and hope. And to our Alma Mater whom we love. We won’t forget the things you’ve done for us. Carver, we’re leaving, and we’ll never forget you. Our hearts will follow you through years. And now forever. Carver. Now we’ll commence this year and say goodbye, To our Alma Mater, Carver High. And that our Senior year forever past. Love for you. dear school, will always last. Carver, we love you, and we’ll love you forever. And we’ll never forget you. Goodbye-----------------------. By Agnes Buckner SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT Ronald Perry TREASURER Agnes Buckner Letter to the Seniors from Principal S. P. Charleston Greetings to the Class of 1967: In a few weeks the 1967 Senior Class will be graduating from Carver High School. During your stay here, your parents and teachers have tried to give you a measure of pro- tection, but when it is all over June 2, 1967, you join with us in our worries about war in Viet Nam, China, the “H” Bomb, the Nation’s Economy, Social Unrest, and Youth Crime. When you get out into the world, you will begin to ask yourselves what are the advant- ages of an education and what you have gained by going to school. You have learned a great many things which add to your store of information and knowledge. You have be- come civilized in the sense that you have learned manners and social etiquette so that you can conduct yourselves as decent and respectable human beings. If any of you young men and women are wondering just what the purpose of the education you have received should be, I will answer you in just a few words: Your education should enable you to function nobly as citizens. It should make you aware of your obligations to cooperate with your fellowmen, to become useful members of your society. You also owe certain duties to yourself. If you fail to make your own life more worthwhile, then you will have wasted your time obtaining this education, and you should have stayed home. I am not going to undertake to tell you how you can make your life worthwhile, but I do want to suggest that peace of mind and contentment are very important ingredients. A mind free from worries and troubles is an asset far more valuable than most people realize. Since I am expected to give you practical advice, I would like to tell you a story of a young fellow who wanted work on a farm. He applied to a farmer who asked him if he had ever worked on a farm. He replied. “No!” Then the farmer asked the boy if he had ever milked a cow, and he replied that he had not. As the farmer continued his question- ing. it was obvious that the young fellow knew nothing about farming, but the youth sum- med ud his qualifications by saying. “I am willing to work and to learn, and I want you to know that I can sleep when the the wind is blowing.” This nuzzled the farmer, but he hired the boy and found him to be a conscientious worker. Whatever he was told to do, he did well. One night a terrible storm broke and the wind and rain seemed to reach hur- ricane proportions. The farmer awakened and aroused members of his family. He called the boy, but there was no answer. He went to the bed and shook the lad roughly. The young fellow only turned over in his sleep and murmured, “There is nothing to be up for.” Then he went back to sleep. The disgusted farmer left him and took a lantern to make his way to the barn. He found everything in good order. The high winds had done no damage to the farm. The farmer was well satisfied and made his way back to the house, and as he walk- ed through the storm, he said to himself, “Well, I know now what that young fellow meant when he said he could sleep when the wind blew.” This is applicable to all of us. If we do our work every day the best we can. we can sleep at night when the wind blows. Some of you will enter college, some will be gainfully employed, others will enroll in a Trade School. Whatever you choose to do, there is a certain amount of work to be done. Work well, so that you can sleep when the wind blows. It is a formula for a happy and contented life, and I urge that you adopt it as your own. .S. P. Charleston. Although the team was extremely young and inexperienced, the coaching staff, headed by Robert Sanders, instilled into the players the necessary vigor, stamina, and will-to-win, which ivas needed to tighten the slack. P. Charleston, we would not have made the grade. Therefore, we would like to express our deep- est gratitude for the help and support which they have given us during our tenure at Carver. Now that the time has come to say farewell, we hope that we have comprehended the knowledge which those persons have tried to instill within us. Ordinarily we give our parents most of the thanks for our success in school: however, the Tigonian Staff would like to say that our stay at Carver was made successful by our second parents, as we call them at school: the teachers, counselors, and principal. The Staff, headed by Mrs. M. J. Skillern, hopes that the ’66-’67 publication of the Tigonian is the best of any other publications. In order to publish this peerless book, it took the complete co- operation of the Senior Class, community, business associations, school authorities, and countless other people and organizations too numerous to mention. The Staff would personally like to express words of thanks to Mr. Lucious Baldwin for his benevolent assistance and support in our publication to Sargarent W. H. Morrow for his fine work as our photographer. As you begin the sequel in an everchanging world, we commend to you Polimus’ advice to his son as recorded in Shakespear’s Hamlet: . . . my blessings go icith thee! And these fetv precepts in thy memory Look thou character. Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportion d thought his act. Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar. Those friends tliou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel; But do not dull thy palm icith entertainment Of each new hatched, unfledged comrade. Beware Of entrance to quarrel, but being in, Beart that the opposed may beware of thee. Give every man thy ear, but fetv thy voice; Take every mans censure, but reserve thy judgment. Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy. But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy; For the apparel oft proclaims the man. Neither a borrower or a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true. And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou can'st not then be false to any man. Farewell: my blessing season this in thee! THE TIGONIAN STAFF 208 Patrons A Sgt.
