OUR PRINCIPAL It has been said that an educator lights up dark places. This is certainly true of our principal, Mr. S. P. Charleston, for he lights up the dark abyss of our minds and encourages us to find enlightenment in knowledge. Mr. Charleston possesses the qualities that are inherent in a great educator — love of mankind, sincerity in his work, a deep concern tor the welfare of his students, a thirst for knowledge, and the desire to help young people become efficient and contributing citizens. Our principal has dedicated himself to the unselfish task of fashioning great students. His success has been phenomenal, and his life will always be a challenge to those around him. With Mr. Charleston at its helm. Carver — in its few years as a high school — has become one of the most outstanding educational institutions in Georgia. Recognizing him as one of the greatest educators in the state. Governor Carl Sanders invited Mr. Charleston to participate in the second Governor's Conference on Education. Because he realizes the importance of community agencies on the lives of young people, Mr. Charleston is an ardent worker in the church and many civic organizations. He has served in the following capacities: Chairman of Muscogee March of Dimes, Chairman of United Givers Drive, member of the Carver Park Advisory Board, and member of the Board of Directors of the Red Cross. In 1960 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Columbus, Mr. Charleston was proclaimed Man of the Year . Because of his service, he was recently presented a twenty-five year award for his work with the Young Men's Christian Association. Our principal was obviously the inspiration that prompted the following quotation: The school's principal is a mighty force — 1. To the child He is a friend and protector. 2. To the teacher He is a guide and advisor. 3. To the itarent He is a counselor and neighbor. 4. To the school superintendent He is a trusted officer. 5. To the community He is a leader and interpreter. 6. To the teaching profession He is a pioneer and a builder. 7. To democracy He is an active citizen. THIS IS OUR PRINCIPAL!
