WILLIAM HENRY SHAW Superintendent of Education Muscogee County School District Dr. Fred Kirby Assistant Superintendent In Charge of Instruction Mr. Brice Carson Assistant Superintendent In Charge of Personnel ADMINISTRATION Mr. Nathan Patterson Assistant Superintendent In Charge of Special Services Mr. Nathan Hunter Treasurer 7 Looki eone OUR PRINCIPAL It has been said that an educator lights up dark places. This is certainly true of our principal, Mr. S. P. Charleston, for he lights up the dark abyss of our minds and encourages us to find enlightenment in knowledge. Mr. Charleston possesses the qualities that are inherent in a great educator — love of mankind, sincerity in his work, a deep concern tor the welfare of his students, a thirst for knowledge, and the desire to help young people become efficient and contributing citizens. Our principal has dedicated himself to the unselfish task of fashioning great students. His success has been phenomenal, and his life will always be a challenge to those around him. With Mr. Charleston at its helm. Carver — in its few years as a high school — has become one of the most outstanding educational institutions in Georgia. Recognizing him as one of the greatest educators in the state. Governor Carl Sanders invited Mr. Charleston to participate in the second Governor's Conference on Education. Because he realizes the importance of community agencies on the lives of young people, Mr. Charleston is an ardent worker in the church and many civic organizations. He has served in the following capacities: Chairman of Muscogee March of Dimes, Chairman of United Givers Drive, member of the Carver Park Advisory Board, and member of the Board of Directors of the Red Cross. In 1960 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Columbus, Mr. Charleston was proclaimed Man of the Year . Because of his service, he was recently presented a twenty-five year award for his work with the Young Men's Christian Association. Our principal was obviously the inspiration that prompted the following quotation: The school's principal is a mighty force — 1. To the child He is a friend and protector. 2. To the teacher He is a guide and advisor. 3. To the itarent He is a counselor and neighbor. 4. To the school superintendent He is a trusted officer. 5. To the community He is a leader and interpreter. 6. To the teaching profession He is a pioneer and a builder. 7. To democracy He is an active citizen. THIS IS OUR PRINCIPAL! MR. JOHN M. BARKER Class Song TUNE —MOON RIVER Although we're going far away from you, Our hearts will always sing thy praise. Dear Carver, our alma mater, You've led us, and brought us, thus far on our way Through life's journey to us you will be A light for all the world to see. Dear Carver, we love you . . . But now, We must say good-bye, to dear ole Carver High. We'll miss you, Good-Bye. To our dear teachers and principal, too, You've given us our knowledge due; And our parents who've love us dearly Stood by us and helped us to follow through. These mem'ries gained here will linger in our hearts. We'll never, ever let them part. Dear Carver we love you . . . but now We must say good-bye; to dear ole Carver High We'll miss you, Good-Bye. Beverli Allen Class Poem NOW IS THE YEAR We've waited many and many a day To get our chance to pass this way. We have been fortunate, and we are glad, Dear Carver, for the privileges we've had. The year we began was sixty-one; The next four years came second to none. And now is the year — sixty-five. Most of us have been able to survive. We've met the challenges which confronted us And achieved the goals, for we knew we must. Each day the road stretched long and hard, But we tackled our problems and did our part. The class of sixty-five must soon face the test; The top is always reached by the best. Our time here has been well spent; Listening and learning, the twig is bent . As the time draws near for our walk down the aisle. We'll say adieu to our school for awhile, We've had to sweat, toil, and shed a tear, But, now we can say, this is the year. Soon you will say, Another class has gone, Yet our love for Carver shall always live on. Then we'll go our separate ways without fear, —For now is the year. Maiestic Ladies, Science Club, Carverhte Staff, Spanish Club (CLASS HISTORY) In September, 1961, the crew of the S. S. CARVER began a voyage which had a lasting effect on all of the members of the crew and on all of the natives of the islands at which the ship docked. The crew which began the maiden voyage was led by the captain. President Gwendolyn Butler, first mate, Bernard McKay; second mate, Beverly Poindexter, petty officer, Carolyn Dotson and steward, Lamar Clarke. After each seaman had learned his duty and everything was shipshape , the ship soon was on its way. After a cry of Land ho from the boatswain, the ship made its first stop on the academic island Success . Here the young seamen laid claim to the larger portion of the land by participating in many academic contests. Many of their names ap- peared on the honor roll of the island. While there two members of the crew, Reita Johnson and Char- lotte Alexander, participated in the Knowledge Bowl and were declared victors after defeating sailors who manned another ship. Thus, the crew earned the name Academic Whizzes , and the voyage continued. The Voyage o Early in the 1960's the ship docked on the island Brawns . Immediately the crew was taken captive by the natives and carried to the ruler of the island. They requested from him permission to leave the island unharmed, and the ruler gave them an alternative. If they could prove that they were better at football, basketball, and track than anyone else, they would be set free. Members of the crew, including James Baskin, Bernard McKay, Enoch Britten, Henry Burnette, Thermus Butler, Herman Lewis, Willie Street, William Copeland, Robert Williams, John Harrow, Willie Purnell, John Scott, Alvin Mitchell, Donald Johnson, and Anderson Robinson, participated in the feats and were vic- torious. To show their gratitude, the other members awarded the athletes a medal on which was inscribed The World's Greatest Athletes . Thus, the crew earned another title. Throughout the 60's while cruising in the waters, the crew lost some of its passengers. Some fell overboard while others headed for the nearest shores to seek their destinies. Beverly Poindexter, who had reigned as their queen; Lois Steadman, an outstanding academic contributor; and Evelyn Mc- Connell, a great majorette; were among the depart- m - S a Great Class ing crewmen. Some, such as Reita Johnson, Con- stance Fedd, Ingrid Barrett, Ethelrose Smith, and Gwendolyn Butler, left the crew to enter college early. Still others, such as Oliver Radney and Albert Mitchell, answered the call of death. Though dis- mayed by the losses, the crew elected Lamar Clarke as its leader and continued on its journey. In September, 1964 the S. S. CARVER dropped anchor on the beautiful Isle of Achievement and decided to elect a queen to rule them while they were there. In grace, charm, and beauty Queen Sheila Knight, Antainette Evans, and Joann Hill towered over all other ladies of the island. Henry Burnette and Willie Street were chosen for the All State Football Team , and Thermus Butler was selected as the most valuable player in bi-city football. While on this island Ethel Grady was selected news reporter and Laura Simpson, band By 1963 the ship pulled ashore on an island not far from their destination. This island had the name of All-Around because in order to remain on it, one had to possess all-around abilities and skills. Before the crew knew it, challenges were thrust upon them. They became involved in numerous contests. Sandra Hall, Bernard McKay, Lorene Thrasher, Charles Barker, Jacquelyn Dewberry, Patricia Jackson, and Charlotte Alexander were awarded prizes in fine arts competitions while Wayne Johnson, Bernard McKay, Benjamin Hol- comb, Charlotte Alexander, and Aufait Williams gained first and second place awards in science and social studies fairs that were given. commentator. Soon the members of the crew began to eager- ly make plans for the final stop, the Port of Graduation . Although the crew knew that upon reaching the port they would separate, they felt that their lives were richer as a result of the friends they had made on the trip, the people who had taught them, and the experiences which they had shared. The members of the crew agreed that when they reminisced about the islands, they would al- ways remember their favorite quotation: Lives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime And departing leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. Secretary Treasurer Mary Glenn Ronald White GUicenA THE EDITOR'S MESSAGE “It was the best of times, It was the worst of times, It was the winter of despair. It was the spring of hope.” It is in this air of uncertainty that the staff of this annual has toiled. We had our moments of triumph and disaster. However, in spite of all of this, we ivere able to establish renewed confi- dence in ourselves and in our fellowmen. Our decade has brought forth a new generation dedicated to the emancipation of all men so that they may truly embrace the actual tenets of democracy—that the lowly are as the mighty, the sinners as the saint, and the legor as the lawyer. It is therefore a pleasure for me to write a message in the TICONIAN symbolizing the end product of democratic experience—working to- gether, and deciding together. As the years pass on, let us strive to make our lives living testimonies to the school spirit, the symbol, and the reality of democracy. Six. years ago, a group of dedicated young scholars decided that the class of 1965 would be the class to show our city, our state, our nation, and our world that, the men and women of Carver High will carry the lantern of enlightenment and blaze its symbol of achievement across the byways and highways of our land. Our task is never finished, so in the words of our President, Lyndon Baines Johnson, “Let Us Con- tinue.” s PAXn NS E M E N T 165 Compliments NECHTMAN STUDIO of Wedding Portrait Commercial TOM RIVERS 113 - 12th Street FA 2-6443 ▼ Compliments of Rucker’s Piano Shop TOASTED PEANUTS PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICHES 220 - 10th Street DELICIOUS CANDIES Columbus, Georgia JOINERS QUALITY FOODS PEOPLES FURNITURE CO. 3 LOCATIONS 100 - 6th St. — FA 2-5337 Telephone 324-3592 1012 First Avenue 2936 - Lumpkin Rd. — MU 9-0480 2601 - Buena Vista Rd — FA 2-0512 Columbus, Georgia Since 1920 Columbus' Most Complete Store for Men and Boys 1214 Broadway Downtown Columbus 166 Compliments of COLUMBUS BOTTLERS ASSOCIATION COCA-COLA BOTTLING CO.
