Our first door had been open. After several weeks of confusion and chaos, we were now set- tled in our homerooms. The freshman class was divided into seven sections-Miss l. C. Fudge, Mrs. S. B. Alexander, Miss F. L. Phillips, Mr. R. Q. Sanders, Mrs. J. B. Johnson, Mrs. A. M. Debro, and Mr. J. E. Wright. The class president was Robert Flowers. The days passed, after we entered our second door, the sopho- more year, with Robert Flowers as president. This was a con- tented one, until the sudden death of one of our advisors, Miss F. L. Phillips. She zealously instructed hundreds of young girls in the art of homemaking. Miss Phillips passed this dear life in December of l96l and the Junior Beta Tri-l-li-Y was named in her honor. With a persistent feeling of assurance, positiveness, and au- thority, we entered the third door to the future in the fall of l962, for we were now classified as upperclassmen, juniors. As most jun- iors, we anxiously looked forward to the biggest event yet-the prom. Our anticipation and eagerness were again lessened, when our class was stricken by grief because of the death of our classmate, Norman O. Christian, to whom this annual is dedicated. The prom, a product of strenuous work and much cooperation, proved to be a marvelous success through the untiring efforts of our president, Ernest l-lardaway. At this time the girls decided to put away their pigtails and tom-boyish habits, and the boys their base- balls and blue jeans in exchange for frills, laces, ties, cumberbunds, and love. The theme was An Evening in Paris , and the music was provided by Jimmy Williams and his band. In the summer of l963, Carole Elaine Webb: and Eloise La- Verner Rayford received fellowships to attend a summer institute at Bennet College and the University of lllinois, respectively. Now it is l964, we journey through this fourth door under the leadership of President Ernest Hardaway. The door has been opened and is now almost closed. The number has narrowed from 250 to l76 and from seven homerooms to six. No more will we close Carver's lockers, walk her corridors or cheer at her games. No more will we be a part of the whole. The conquest of the world lies ahead and the doors for preparation have been closed, and the challenging ones have been opened. The players endured the hot sun and dust to get in shape to play the exciting game of football. There were times when the going was exceedingly rough and might have even turned a few from the sport, but the ones who gave their all and stuck-it out proved they were men and lovers of the games. The Tigers were a young inexperienced group of players for the most part. There were only seven returning lettermen. Some of the experienced hands were Norman FIash Nash, who last year was all Bi-City, Johnny Harris, a senior end and William Kegler, a senior tackler. There was a fine turnout of freshmen and others who were trying the game for the first time. Many of the new faces made great contributions to the team. Some of the newcomers were Thermus Butler, Charlie Rogers and Willie Moore. Coach Sanders had a good nucleus and a fine crop of freshmen from which to build a respectable team. The prospect for the season looked bright, but Coach Sanders knew that he would have to overcome the obstacle of inexperience before his team would live up to its potential. His hope was that experienced men and a few of the freshmen could carry the team through until vital experience was gained. But as fate would have it, the inexperience of the team promptly came te the forefront and' was the deciding factor in most of the games. Time after time Lady Luck turned her back on the Tigers. Even though the Tigers did not enjoy a successful season, they gained valu- able experience which will be a great asset to them in the coming year. Left to Right: Larry Goode, James William, Alvesta Lamb, Henry Burnett, Charles Rodger, William Averett, James Baskin, Herman Lewis, Willie Moore, Charles Jackson, Thermus Butler. 5 . if - ig My gel?
