Class of '64 Q. W. Carver High School P met ops, ftortk Carolina foreword The curtain of knowlege is slowly rising. We ascend in scholarship as the years elapse. Upon graduation we, the seniors, will take a giant step across the threshold into life. Our obligation to the world shall exist until death. The use that we make of ourselves will be our contribution. Our yearbook represents a minute portion of our lives which will forever be engraved in our minds. As we walk through the sun and shadows of life, the memories recorded in this book shall most surely be cher- ished. Proudly, I present THE EAGLE for 1964. g§J C A To you, Mrs. Tyson, the students of George Washington Carver High School, do with much pride and sincerity, dedicate our first publication of the EAGLE. Druing your six years of teaching you have guided many students in the right paths through your kindness, willingness to help, and, most important, your pa- tience. We are truly grateful for the marvelous supervision given to us in preparing our yearbook. The entire student body joins in unison to say, Thank you for all you've done. We assure you that your efforts will not have been spent in vain. Dedicatee Mrs. Kessie S. Zyson Carver School guides and prepares its students toward a brighter future By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. PROVERBS 24:3-4 m mam •1111 •iiil Ait :,, J. May the memories of the organizations, activities, scenes, and faces which appear in the green garden of this annual keep ever before you the hopes, ambitions, and widening usefulness to which your young lives are now dedicated. As your friend, I wish for you life's richest blessings as a reward for your contributions toward the fuller and more abundant life. MR. MORRIS S. CLARY, Superintendent Edgecombe County Schools Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 1963-64. George Washington Carver considers you ambassadors of good will, venturing with pride into all walks of life manifesting those ideals and principles to which this great institution ascribes in its tenets and philosophy. As you go out from the protective walls of George Washington Carver School, your Alma Mater, may God grant that the greatest reservoir of your strength will not be shaken, but revitalized in your efforts to build a future and to help mankind. Wherever you plan to go may I encourage you to take the name of Jesus with you. Be sure you give of your best to the Master, give him first place in your heart, give him first place in your service, consecrate every part. Special tribute is given to the sponsors and staff whose conscientious efforts have made possible the suc- cessful compilation of this our first Yearbook. COTTEN Senior Class History As we, the class of '64, entered the doors of Carver School, August 26, 1960, we never knew so many blissful memories were in store for us. As seniors, we now take the opportunity to review the past four years. The 143 of us accustomed ourselves to all the dignity a freshman could possibly have in spite of the rigid treatment from the upperclassmen. We elected officers, excelled in our studies and participated in extracurricular activities. All too soon the close of the year drew near, and we began to reminisce over the many events and activities we had enjoyed so much. Finally, it was time to close the book in the first chapter of our four years at Dear Ole Carver. After vacation, we were on the scene at Carver again. We were happy to be back but sad that many of our old friends were not. We worked even more diligently this year, and as a reward for our efforts our Varsity Basketball Team won the District Tournament Title. Much wiser from our new experiences and our new ventures, we returned in August of '62, as sophisticated Juniors. Like Juniors around the world, we eagerly anticipated the biggest social event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. We have now traveled the rocky road of three years of high school and our book is about to close once more. But as it closes we are fullfilling our desires of becoming the dignified seniors we have yearned to become for so long. At long last, our Senior year has arrived! An aura of dignity engulfed us as we realized that we were on the threshold of an advancing society. We keep steering our course straight to achieve our goal and prize of the mark of our calling. In the organizing of ourselves we elected Marvin Johnson as our captain and Billy Barnes as his capable and willing assistant. Opportunity availed itself so that many students joined the following extracurricular activi- ties: Band, and Glee Club, Math, Art, French, Library, and Science Clubs. In March we had the annual Unveiling of our Senior Class Motto entitled, There Is No Victory Without Labor. Our class colors are Blue and Gold and our flower is the Yellow Carna- tion. Also in March our Senior Class Play was given. Henpecked Henry provided many laughs for an enthusiastic audience. We are fullpledged seniors. Though our journey was long and treacherous, we scaled the mountains until we reached its highest peak. The D -I -P -L -O -M -A .
