Class History In 1955, on a very beautiful September day, 113 rockets blasted-off the doors of Carver High School, Mount Olive, North Carolina with Mr. S.E. Durante as Chief Astronaut, whose destination was to reach the moon by June 2, 1959. So we began sailing in our orbit with Mrs. R.J. Durante, Mr. L.W. Hickerson, and Mrs. H.J. Bivens as our Astronauts. Now that our Freshman year had zoomed off to 60,000 miles an hour we began engaging in air tight activities and being successful in accomplishing these tasks, this gave us the courage which we needed to continue on. The receiving of honors on Honors Day went to: Frances Henry, Etta Budd, Kenneth Stephenson, Charles Robinson, Lillian Middleton, Prettlo Musgrave and Ruby Smith gave all of us aspira- tion to do our best during the rainbows that followed. Second we sailed through the orbits of our sophomore year with great speed in various activities that blows about 120,000 miles high in the cool air space of the orbit such as: Dramatics with Hattie Royall, Prettlo Musgrave playing the major roles in the thrilling Melodrama The Youngest , Walter Giles and Charles Robinson playing the leading roles in Plucked Peacock. Our Student Council was still cruising when Lillian Middleton was elected Secretary and Frances Henry, Hostess. The New Homemakers of America were orbiting high when Ruby Smith became State Historian of the N.H.A. The 4-H Club was proud to have two winners, Jacquelyn Durham in a Breadmaking Demonstration and Edna Martin in a Dairy Foods Demonstration. George Goodman became sports editor of the school paper. We came down for refueling that year with Doreatha Fields, Ruby Smith, Lillian Middleton, Charles Robinson, Stewart Armwood, George Goodman, Frances Henry and Jerome Kornegay serving at the Junior- Senior Prom. We zoomed up with a speed of 180,000 miles per hour breaking the sound barrier with the Junior-Sen- ior Prom whose theme was Evening In Paris . There were speeches by our president, Charles Robinson, and also the president of the Senior Class, Leslie Lofton. Second prize went to Prettlo Musgrave who participated in the District Typing Contest, while Lillian Middleton and Ruby Smith were presented to North Carolina Society as 1957 Debutantes. We have launched the moon of knowledge with the following officers leading the way: President, Lillian Middleton; Vice President, George Goodman; Secretary, Ardella McKinney; Assistant Secretary, Edna Martin; Treasurer, Ruby Smith. Soon we will be taking off again to accomplish that final aim in the realm of interplanetary travel . We leave this thought with you, Aim at the stars if you only reach the tree top. Historian, Ruby Mae Smith
