To you, 0 Carver, we have been given many joys in our preparation for the future and we deeply thank all concerned. As we recall the many joyous events we shared during our four years in high school, we shall re- member especially the places where we gathered to study, to play and just to be together. This yearbook will help us to remember the im- portant things which contributed to our joys, pleasures and disappointments. When we open our yearbook we may again relive our high school career and we may recall our many friends with whom we spent our four years. We wish to manifest our love, appreciation, and sincerity for the ceaseless efforts you have shown in our behalf. You have been understanding and always willing to help when we were in need. In appreciation of these reasons the class of 1966 dedicates its yearbook to our advisors — Mrs. Ruth Halsey, Mr. Charles Greene, and Mr. D. L. Lash. IN MEMORY OF MR. CARL ROOSEVELT MARTIN, JR. Carver High School has lost a scholar, friend, advisor and a great administrator. There is no other way of describing our beloved principal because he was devoted to the furthering of our education. Mr. Martin taught at various schools in Forsyth County as both a teacher and principal. In 1950, he became assistant principal at Carver Consolidated School and served until 1953 when he was appointed principal. His work at Carver achieved for him a high status in operation of union schools. He was a consultant in that field at a number of summer institutes. To the students of Carver High School Mr. Martin endowed his profound enthusiasm. As a principal he was demanding. But somehow you didn’t really mind working for him. You always knew that no matter how hard you worked to improve our school, he worked that much harder to become a more dedicated and effective principal. Although he was a principal, Mr. Martin never stopped being a teacher and a student. He was always searching, studying, and striving for improvement and knowledge. Yes, we at Carver High School have lost a scholar, friend, advisor and a great administrator. “As man may say he fought his fight, proved his truth by his endeavor.” — Boker w I 15 Taking care of important business As we knew him MEMORIES . . . ntnnanntnt; t.yy ntnittrttnnftnfi-i Giving sound advice to the Carver Family Entering to serve 16 ACTING PRINCIPAL Mr. E. E. Balsley B.S., A. and T. College Greensboro, North Carolina M.A., Columbia University New York, New York Mr. Balsley’s experience in education has been both as a teacher and as assistant principal. Solving the countless problems that arise in keeping a high school running properly is a complicated task, but Mr. Balsley handles it smoothly and efficiently. For his leadership, liberality, and his patience we thank him from the bottom of our hearts. 18 Mrs. A. M. Smith Mr. Ethan Sherrod A.B., Livingstone College, B.S., A. and T. And in the field of destiny We reap what we have sown. Class Song (In the tune of “HE”) Dear ole Carver School, Now it is time to go. You meant much to us, And now we’ll miss you so. We walked in the halls With pride and dignity. Sometimes we were loud and Full of mysteries. But through all four years. We all worked so hard. And with grateful hearts Now we must all depart, Though it makes us sad To leave our friends and foe. But it is time to go. Dear ole Carver School, For you our love has grown. You have filled our lives With joy of depths unknown Though we hate to go. But time is drawing near. Forward into life To meet our destiny. So tonight we give account Of all our years. We hope that our actions Justify your cheers. Though it makes us sad To leave our friends and foe. But it is time to go. Time to go. Class Poem We came to Carver in ’62, And felt that there was nothing to do. But looking around we soon found. That Carver High was the best in town. Our Freshmen year was unwisely spent. Entirely making merriment. We were never serious in class or out. And at every occasion we laughed right out. In our Sophomore year we were cocky and sure. We thought we know everything of intelligentsia. We care’d not to study for that was folly, So we went on our way relentlessly jolly. As our Junior year began, we realized. The importance attached to our lives. So we resolved to make better use of our time. Determined not to pay the lack of education fine. In our Senior year we had many tasks to perform. And we put ourselves to the test like men in reform. So tonight we give account of all our years, And we hope our actions justify your cheers. We are taking this opportunity to look back at those years that have patterned our character and prepared us for our future plans. Our Freshman year was a most momentous one. This is not surprising since in a matter of days we had to put the pleasures of Junior High School behind us and get accustomed to hard work. Even so, there was time for enjoying ourselves. We elected Ira Palmer as our class president ; Lillie Evans, secretary; Alease Manns, vice-president; and Priscilla Scales, treasurer. We had many par- ticipants in a variety of activities including the Glee Club, Dramatics, Y-Teens, Basketball, and Football. After much hard study, the intensive year of our indoctrinations was ended and the Sophomore year loomed ahead. More accustomed to high school work, we began this year with a positive attitude to where we were going. This year went by quickly and during this year, Yetter Jones, Alease Manns, Carlotta Mitchell, and Phyllis Kimbrough were pages with Ira Palmer as page boy at the Junior-Senior prom. Carl WJtherspoon, Dwight Jones, Kenneth Havner, and Ralph Barber were members of the varsity football team. Parthenia Scales and Sara Hunter were elected to attend the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held at A T College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Ira Palmer spent the summer at a high school session for boys at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. This year was full of social activity performed and participated in by all our sophomores. By our Junior year, we had become adept to high school work and were looking forward to gradua- tion. We chose as our leaders Parthenia Scales, president ; William Watkins, vice-president ; Lor- raine Watkins, secretary; and John Choate, treas- urer. We were well represented on the Student Council with Parthenia Scales as vice-president. Several of our students distinguished themselves on the honor roll. They were Phyllis Kimbrough, Parthenia Scales, Ira Palmer, and Sara Hunter. Seven students were inducted into the National Honor Society. Phyllis Kimbrough, Parthenia Scales, Sara Hunter, Irma Bivens, Yetter Jones, and Gwendolyn Glenn were the chosen. Parthenia Scales was chosen as the teen correspondent for the Journal and Sentinel newspaper. Several of our class members attended school six days a week by attending the Bennett College Saturday School in Greensboro. Those students were Sara Hunter, Parthenia Scales, and Ira Palmer. Carver played in the state championship football game and lost a close one to Wilson by a score of 14-12. Carl IVitherspoon, Samuel Sheff, William Sturdivant, Kenneth Havner, Dwight Jones, Ralph Barber, and James Turner were outstanding juniors in this classic. This was also the year for our Junior-Senior prom, and we looked forward to it with much anxiety. We had participants in almost every ac- tivity open to us and the highlight of the year was the prom. Our Senior year finally arrived and we are pre- pared and ready to venture out into the world that awaits us. This year is one that we can never for- get, for it is the year of our departure from Carver. Many Seniors were elected to head various school organizations. They were Brenda Cloud, president of the Dramatics Club ; Shelton Glenn, president of the Bus Drivers ; Carolyn James, president of the Ushers’ Club; Priscilla Scales, president of the Health Careers Club; Anita Jones, head cheer- leader; Barbara Triplet, head majorette; Phyllis Kimbrough, president of the National Honor So- ciety; Sara Hunter, Editor-in-Chief of the Annual, president of the Junior Engineers; Carl Wither- spoon, Editor-in-Chief of the Carver HighLite, De- lane Jessup, president of the Dance Group; Alease Manns, president of the Traffic Squad; Nicole Shelton, president of the Future Teachers of Amer- ica; and Ira Palmer president of the Student Coun- cil. Six students were accepted at R. J. Reynolds High School in Advanced Placement courses. They were Yetter Jones, Irma Bivens, and Sara Hunter in World History; Ira Palmer and Parthenia Scales in Mathematics ; and Phyllis Kimbrough in Chemis- try. With the support of our Seniors on the grid- iron, Carl Witherspoon, Samuel Sheff, Kenneth Havner, Dwight Jones, Thomas Sullivan, Steven Miller, William Sturdivant, and Milton Melton, Carver again went to the state championship in football. Brenda Cloud was crowned “Miss Carver” at the annual homecoming game. Lillie Evans, Margie Jefferson, Ai’gentina Rice, and Lorraine Watkins served as members of the Glee Club. Our Senior Class Officers chosen were Carl Wither- spoon, president ; Steven Miller, vice-president ; Gwendolyn Childs, secretary; John Choate, treas- urer ; and Parthenia Scales, reporter. We solemnly regret that in the annuals of the history of our class, we must record the demise of our beloved principal, Mr. Caid R. Martin, Jr., but as disconsolate as we are, we must realize that this is a part of life and we must accept it. He was a most dear friend to all the members of our class. At the end of our four years of frustrations, growth, enjoyment, and all those other things that make growing up what it is, we like to look back at the hardships and smile upon them, knowing that they were stepping stones for our desires and achievements in life. Now the door to achievement is open and we are ready to venture out into the society that awaits our contributions. Historians Shelton Glenn Brenda Cloud Anita Jones Ira Palmer 92 Hope has been the beacon that has lighted all the facets of our co-opera- tive work at Carver High School. May its beams continue to light the pat- terns of our lives in years to come. CLASS PROPHECY Time: 1972 Place: In and out of the United States The Class of 1966 from Carver High School has proved to be the most successful and outstanding class to be gradu- ated from Carver. As I look back and compare the class with other graduating classes, I find that this class has accom- plished more. First I see that Wanda Summers, Shelton Glenn, and Parthenia Scales are presently employed at the United States Naval Yard in Washington, D. C. Wanda and Parthenia are in the mathematics division while Shelton is in the digit computer division. John Choate, Zelma Campbell, and Steven Miller are all employed at the famed Cortez Peters Business School. Connie Smith is head nurse at Walter Reed with Brenda Fulton and Felicidoll Thomas working under her supervision. Thomas Sullivan is known nationally because of his sportsmanship in the field of basketball. He plays with the Philadelphia 76’s. I also had the pleasure of visiting Carnegie Hall in New York City where I saw Ralph Lowery, concert musician, Lorraine Watkins, and Ernest Ingram, famed soloists. Moving on into upper New England, I find that Ronald and Donald Williams operate a very promising mortuary. Later that day we boarded a plane to visit our friends in foreign countries. Our trip takes us first to the famous salon of Christian Dior where Shirley Blackmon is a famous designer. In the Sahara Desert, I find that Ira Palmer, an aero- space engineer, has just completed his latest project, Apollo III. Moving on through Africa, I find Francina Hauser running a hospital with Margie Crawley, Martha Linton, and Brenda Fulton as head nurses. In Ghana, the company Ramey and Rucker, owned by James Ramey and Joseph Rucker has just completed the plans for a new multi- million dollar building. Journeying on to India, we find Alease Manns, Alfred Williamson, and James Totten working through the Univer- sity of Sidney to improve the culture of India. Traveling on to Pakistan, we find Lillie Evans, Carolyn Robinson, Claude Hardin and Shirley Hauser working as a team in social work. George Jones is planning a United States military base to be built at the end of this year. Kathleen McTeer and Shirley Brooks work in the office of United States Naval Personnel executives in Japan. Aaron Cassaberry, James Mitcbell, and Linwood Powell are co- owners of a rising beverage bottling company. Leaving once again by boat, we stop by Hawaii. We were greeted by none other than Bernard Cain, a prominent general at our military installations there. Once again we find ourselves in the United States on the West Coast. In Seattle, Washington, Samuel Sheff, an eminent druggist, runs a chain of pharmaceutical supply companies. At the University of California in Berkeley, Florence Brown is an English professor, Nicole Shelton is associate history professor; Carl Witherspoon is head of the social science department. Lenora Workman is a well known cos- motologist in Hollywood. One of the new techniques used in business offices today is the stenographer pool. In the city of Las Vegas, Gwen- dolyn Childs, Carlotta Mitchell, Priscialla Martin, Juanita Cannady, and Carol Blackburn are employed by the world’s largest. In the largest state, Texas, Eddie Simmons is a prominent oil industrialist; Calvin Ingram his corporation lawyer. As we cross the United States again into South Dakota we find that Leon Jackson, has become an ourstanding florist owner. His secretary is Adell Watson. Moving on to Detroit, we find Preston Fulp as a top re- cording artist for Motown Recording Company. Sam Puryear is a top mechanic for General Motors along with Albert Tatum. In Chicago, Patricia Huntley and Jeanette Turner are top models for the Ebony Fashion Fair. Francis Bell and Cynthia Benjamin are public health nurses under the super- vision of Carolyn James. In Cleveland, Ohio, Anita Jones is a top pediatrician with Margaret Hauser as her nurse. Irma Bivens has made many discoveries in biology, Shirley Williams is working along in bacteriology. Phyllis Caldwell is an associate professor of home econ- mics at Fisk University in Nashville. Sara Hunter is em- ployed at a high school. Claryce Counts is an instructor in mathematics. Traveling on to Atlanta, Georgia, we find Phyllis Kim- brough as president of Spelman College; Brenda Cloud, is a professor of sociology and Sheila Brooks, is English pro- fessor. Naturally, we find Wi lliam Sturdivant as head of the Welfare Department in Tallahasse, Florida with Barbara Triplet as his executive secretary. Returning home, we find many of our fellow classmates preferred to stay in North Carolina. Milton Melton and David Witherspoon are renown for their outstanding per- formance with the General Electric Corporation in the area of specialization. William Watkins is general manager of sales. Delane Jessup received her doctorate in physical ed- ucation and is head of that department at Livingstone where Yetter Jones is head of the history department. Gwendolyn Glenn and Jo Ann Stinson are employed at Car- ver Elementary School. Argentina Rice and Brenda Jones decided to live in Greensboro and teach. Paul Gwyn, along with his associate William Smith, has laid out the plans for Winston-Salem’s fifth skyscraper. Larry Kimbrough is an associate professor in the economics department of Wake Forest College. Walter Hauser is employed as an instructor at Modern Barber College. Finally, John Douthit is a suc- cessful business man working in the Wachovia Bank Build- ing. After traveling all around the world and considering the many accomplishments of the class of 1966, we can safely conclude that this class took full advantage of their acade- mic training at Carver and are destined to become the most prosperous class ever to grace the halls of Carver.
