Class History We, the Senior Class of Carver High School, the year 1962 finds it almost impossible to express in words our achievements in all of our endeavors, to formulate a class history. What has distinguished us from seniors of other years? There is no formal, precise distinction that will communicate the richness of these years or of these experiences. We must review these years in all their complexity to arrive at an answer. As freshmen, we were shy and nervous, but we were eager to climb the first step of the long walk which lay ahead. Soon becoming adjusted to our new environment through the friendliness of the upper classmen and the help of the administration, we got an early start in the activities of our school. Shelby Douglas, Jurel Hawkins, Jessie Bennett, Geraldine Sharpe, Emma Thompson, Pender Cates, Winfred Searcy, and Roscoe Bigby became members of the band. In the choir were Ruby Correll, Faye Speas, Henrietta Sturdivant, Alvin Glenn, Leon Scales, Geraldine Covington and Adma Hauser. There was also wide participation in the championship games by Donnie Warren and Russell Rice. After passing the first milestone of our journey, we as sophomores, began our second year toward our goal of gradu- ation. The various clubs and organizations of the school were more interesting with many participants. Many of us put forth our best efforts scholastically and kept up the required grade points and quality points for the Honor Roll. On the gridiron, several of our boys made impressive showings. They were Russell Rice, Odell Tillery, and Tommie Oliver. The halfway mark of our goal had been reached. Each of us looked forward to our junior year, hoping that it would be as profitable and exciting as the first two years. Four of our boys were chosen to enroll in classes held at the Industrial Eiducation Center. They were Clay Fulton, Ronald Matthews, Roosevelt Lowery, and Eugene Campbell. Joann Dark was elected Editor- in- Chief of The Carver Hi-Lite. Tapped for the National Honor Society were Eugene Campbell, Clay Fulton, Joann Dark, Mary Manns and Ronald Matthews. Dianne Conrad was chosen as an attendant to Miss Twin City Classic. Mary Manns, James Druham, Jack Nelson, Emma Thompson, Rudolph Sullivan and Pender Cates were members of the Jazz Band. At last our positions as dignified Seniors became a reality. Many of us were elected to important positions of school organizations. Eugene Campbell was electedpresident of the National Honor Society, Senior Class and Captain of the Football Team. Clay Fulton was chosen president of the Student Council and New Farmers of America, Joann Dark was chosen Drum Majorette, and Gwendolyn Cowan, president of the Y- Teens. The Senior Class selected Geraldine Sharpe as Editor of the YELLOW JACKET, Willie Williams as Sports Editor, and Ronald Matthews, president of the Hi-Y. These are only a portion of our varied and many high school activities which have been indelibly imprinted upon our minds, and now as time runs out, we are overwhelmed with joy by our never ending pleasant memories that cannot be touched by time. We shall continue to seek greater knowledge and help to promote high scholarship; to encourage sincere and zealous endeavors in all fields of knowledge and service; to cultivate a high order of personal living; and to develope appreciation for scholarly work and scholarly endeavors in others. We, the class of 1962 leave with our successors, our best wishes for success as we wait reluctantly for time to fade away. Farewell L ! ! ! Joann Dark, Historian 30
