C. North Carolina Room Forsyth County Public Library : West Fifth Street ston-Sa ' em. HC 27101 UDd We wish to manifest our love, appreciation, and sincerity to one of the most compre- hensible and genuine teachers, ever known to us. He is one who is understanding and is always willing to help when we are in need. On behalf of the Senior Class of nineteen- hundred sixty-two, we would like to dedicate this twelfth edition of the YELLOW JACKET to our beloved football Coach, MR. DAVID LEE LASH. 2 Foreword The class of 1962 has reached the completion of its high school education. You, O Carver, have given us much prepara- tion for the future and we deeply thank all concerned. We still remember Carver always as an institution of higher learning. Just as a mirror reflects our image, so will this annual re- flectthe faded memories of school days. Vhen the hands of the clock have revolved over and over again, leaving their marks upon each and all of us, then will the superlatives, photographs, class history and pages of this annual picture a true reflection of all the joys and sorrow, pleasures and hardships which were in reality, stepping stones on which we, step by step, have risen to Senior distinction. What wonder then, when years of life have left our memories hazy that this book shall reflect the past charms of youth and fellow classmates? It has been said that parting is such sweet sorrow. With mournful countenance we make this our last contribution to you, O Carver, an annual as a reminder of our contributions and accomplishments. What has distinguished us from seniors of other years? There is no formal, precise distinction that will communicate the richness of these years or of these experiences. We must review these years in all their complexity to arrive at an answer. As freshmen, we were shy and nervous, but we were eager to climb the first step of the long walk which lay ahead. Soon becoming adjusted to our new environment through the friendliness of the upper classmen and the help of the administration, we got an early start in the activities of our school. Shelby Douglas, Jurel Hawkins, Jessie Bennett, Geraldine Sharpe, Emma Thompson, Pender Cates, Winfred Searcy, and Roscoe Bigby became members of the band. In the choir were Ruby Correll, Faye Speas, Henrietta Sturdivant, Alvin Glenn, Leon Scales, Geraldine Covington and Adma Hauser. There was also wide participation in the championship games by Donnie Warren and Russell Rice. After passing the first milestone of our journey, we as sophomores, began our second year toward our goal of gradu- ation. The various clubs and organizations of the school were more interesting with many participants. Many of us put forth our best efforts scholastically and kept up the required grade points and quality points for the Honor Roll. On the gridiron, several of our boys made impressive showings. They were Russell Rice, Odell Tillery, and Tommie Oliver. The halfway mark of our goal had been reached. Each of us looked forward to our junior year, hoping that it would be as profitable and exciting as the first two years. Four of our boys were chosen to enroll in classes held at the Industrial Eiducation Center. They were Clay Fulton, Ronald Matthews, Roosevelt Lowery, and Eugene Campbell. Joann Dark was elected Editor- in- Chief of The Carver Hi-Lite. Tapped for the National Honor Society were Eugene Campbell, Clay Fulton, Joann Dark, Mary Manns and Ronald Matthews. Dianne Conrad was chosen as an attendant to Miss Twin City Classic. Mary Manns, James Druham, Jack Nelson, Emma Thompson, Rudolph Sullivan and Pender Cates were members of the Jazz Band. At last our positions as dignified Seniors became a reality. Many of us were elected to important positions of school organizations. Eugene Campbell was electedpresident of the National Honor Society, Senior Class and Captain of the Football Team. Clay Fulton was chosen president of the Student Council and New Farmers of America, Joann Dark was chosen Drum Majorette, and Gwendolyn Cowan, president of the Y- Teens. The Senior Class selected Geraldine Sharpe as Editor of the YELLOW JACKET, Willie Williams as Sports Editor, and Ronald Matthews, president of the Hi-Y. These are only a portion of our varied and many high school activities which have been indelibly imprinted upon our minds, and now as time runs out, we are overwhelmed with joy by our never ending pleasant memories that cannot be touched by time. We shall continue to seek greater knowledge and help to promote high scholarship; to encourage sincere and zealous endeavors in all fields of knowledge and service; to cultivate a high order of personal living; and to develope appreciation for scholarly work and scholarly endeavors in others. We, the class of 1962 leave with our successors, our best wishes for success as we wait reluctantly for time to fade away. Farewell L ! ! ! Joann Dark, Historian 30 Last Will and Testament LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1962 We, the graduating class of nineteenhundred and sixty-two of Carver High School in the city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina being of sound mind must pause here for the purpose of stating our last will and testament. Since we have tried to be honest, as well as just and generous in our distribution of the many gifts which we now possess, we have finally reached our decisions. Therefore, we hereby give these possessions to certain designated persons whose names shall be recorded herein. We sincerely hope that those who receive them will accept them as sacred tokens from those who have gone before. To Mr. Martin, our beloved principal, we leave the privilege of running the school where we left off, with sincere wishes that he will do a better job than we did. To Mrs. Halsey and Mr, Lash, our advisors, we leave a few gray hairs and our sincere appreciation, which they deserve for those sleepless nights spent worrying about us. To the Junior Class, the Senior Class will the front seats in auditorium. 1. ALLEN, CUFTON 2. BENNETT. JESSIE 3. BIGBY, LEON 4. BIGBY, ROSCOE 5. BOOZER, MARY 6. In Witness hereof we have signed, sealed and published this our Last Will and Testament. The Senior Class of 1962 31 Class Prophecy Let us focus our eyes into the future and see how the 1962 Senior Class has progressed in ten years. It is now 1972 and I decided to take my vacation and visit the members of the 1962 Senior Class. My home is in Pasadena, California, where I teach sociology. I am taking this trip alone, because my husband, TOMMIE OLIVER must remain in California to attend a conference concerning our large Oil Corporation. Working along with him is PENDER CATES. I am invited to be guest of FAYE SPEAS who is a pediatrician in Hollywood, where there are many class members living. For lunch she invites ANNA KIMBROUGH, who is a model and designs for such movie stars as SARAH DINGLE, JOANN DARK, and NANCY TYNER. After lunch, we tour the remainder of the great city and find that RUBY CORRELL manages many different singing groups and is assisted by GERALDINE COVINGTON. On Siffler Avenue RUDOLPH SULLIVAN and WINFRED SEARCY own one of the leading clothing stores and across the street is ALVIN GLENN ' S BARBER COLLEGE. After leaving California, I fly to Philadelphia, Pa. where I am the guest of MARY BOOZER, a commercial teacher. Here I meet CLAY FULTON who is a very successful college professor, and EUGENE CAMPBELL who is a prominent engineer. Here, for entertainment we go to a baseball game and I see quite a few of my old classmates. ALFRED DOBSON, WILBERT PATTON, CHARLES DIXSON, and DONNIE WARREN are players of the Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball team. Before leaving I am invited to eat in JEROME WATSON ' S RESTAURANT, one of the largest. While arriving at the airport in Baltimore, Maryland, I meet GWENDOLYN COWAN and EARLINE MITCHELL who are Stewardesses here. I then tour John Hopkins ' Hospital, and to my surprise find that EMMA THOMPSON, GWENDOLYN McQUEEN, HYMERLA MATTHEWS are head nurses and seem to enjoy it to the utmost. JOSEPHINE PENN and RUSSELL RICE are joint owners of a large athletic firm. RONALD MATTHEWS who is an electrical engineer invites me to have lunch with him, along with ROOSEVELT LOWERY and CLIFTON ALLEN, who are here on business concerning their great Agricultiual Corporation. SHIRLENE HAWKINS, DOROTHY CONRAD, and DIANNE CONRAD are leading Dance Instructors here. lam now on my way to Florida, and meet MARY WILLIS who is flying to Paris on a divorce case. She is a lawyer. After arriving here I meet ODELL TILLERY who is a coach at Florida A. M. College. While touring the city, I see MELVIN PALMER who is chief of the Police Force. I also visit SAMUEL THOMAS who is the World ' s fastest tract star. The Bigby Brothers, ROSCOE AND LEON BIGBY are international tennis palyers and have won great fame. At an intergrated school SHELBY DOUGLAS is head dietition. JAMES DURHAM and JESSIE BENNETT own a comedy theater in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is the greatest. I also find that DAVID HAIRSTON is educated in the field of Science and is working toward his Doctor ' s Degree. My next stop is in Washington, D. C. First, I visit GERALDINE SHARPE, a history teacher who has married the one she always said she would. Here also is REGINALD WHITE, who is known as one of the best politicians in the United States. After arriving in New York I meet DONALD PATTON, an electronic engineer. LEON SCALES is head of a large gymnastics program. ALMA HAUSER is also here and is in the Business of Beauty Culture. Here also is DAVID LYLES, a laboratory tech- nician. THOMAS GARY is stationed here in the Navy. In New York City ARWILDA QUATTLEBAUM is an interior decorator. MARTHA SMITH, with whom I am having lunch is a teacher. BEATRICE FULTON teaches also. From here I fly to Hawaii and find that many of my classmates have made their homes there. DELORIS LOWERY is a brain Surgeon. BETTY BROWN along with HELEN ROAN are operators of a Business School there. To me this trip has been one of the most auspicious events in my life, after seeing the tremendous amount of progress that has taken place among us. I hope that in the years to come, this prophecy will come true. Mary Rachel Manns 32 Class Song Class Colors BLUE and WHITE Class Motto To make good use of life, one should have in youth the experience of advanced years, and in old age the vigor of youth. Class Poem As we travel far and near We ' ll never forget our school that ' s dear, O ' Carver, who is so divine How we hate to leave you behind. For we have reached the crossroads And these things for us must end. Some go one way, some another, Perhaps never to meet again. But if we never meet again And the memories bring us sadness. It ' s only because we regret the loss Of all the moments of your gladness. O ' Carver, our greatest loss Must tomorrow be our gain, The best of every thing we choose That we may not have cried in vain. Faye Speas Anna Kimbrough Carver, thy name we praise; Standards and honor raise; We ' ll ever faithful be Throughout eternity. May peace abide with thee And God forever guide Thy heights supreme and true. Blessings to you. Through years of toil and pain May thy dear walls remain Beacons of heavenly light. Undaunted by the fight; And when life ' s race is won. And thy noble work is done. Oh, God, forever bind Our hearts to Thine.
