Have you ever felt the air of dignity or like the world is at your feet? Well, this is the feeling of every senior. To really understand this feeling let me relate the history of the class. Our freshmen year was very interesting and a great experience. To the upper classmen we were just a bunch of green freshmen, but to ourselves there were no group of students who were more dignified and knew so much as we. Dianne Caldwell, Emma Sims; Cody Mitchell and James Joyce started the year as officers of the class. We were represented in many organizations and ac- tivities. Gail Caesar, LaVerne Campbell, Wilbert Thompson, Betty Anderson, Lillie Mae Brown, Ann Speas, Roy Gwyn, James Joyce, Alberta Nelson and John Shore were honor students. We had students who were very active in the Glee Club, Band, Hi-Y Club, Y-Teens Club, Student Council, Dramatic Club and Bus Driver ' s Club. Although, we were somewhat confused, excited and worried about the future, our freshmen year turned out alright. By the end of the year, we were looking forward to becoming sophisticated sophomores. We worked even more diligently our sophomore year. We were represented in the Student Council by: Nannie Hood, Dianne Caldwell, Ann Speas, Doris Valentine, Royal Gwyn, John Shore and Alberta Nel- son. Gail Caesar was Editor of Hi-Lite. Agnes Webster, Eva Mae Brown and Nannie Hood repre- sented us in the Library Club. Franklin Holman, Nathaniel Wright, Willie Lash, John Shore, Wilbert Thompson, Fred Hyman, George Clark, John Lash, Robert Leak, LaVerne Campbell and Alfred Leak were in the Engineering Club. We had many musicians, for example, Gilbert Partlow, Delois Lowery, Alfred Leak, James Joyce and John Shore were in the choir, while Dianne Caldwell, Larry Por- ter, Wilbert Thompson, Gail Caesar, Philstine NeSmith, Corbitt Mitchell, Marie Gwyn, Royal Gwyn and George Smith were in the band. Cody Mitchell, Magaret Gwyn, Dianne Caldwell, Lillie Brown, Alberta Nelson, Royal Gwyn, Nannie Hood, Ann Speas, John Shore, Wilbert Thompson, Betty Ander- son, LaVerne Campbell and Gail Caesar were very proud, indeed, to become the first members of the Guiding Arm ' s Club, a branch of the Crown and Scepter Club. As juniors we were anxious to attend the Junior and Senior Prom, and we were represented in many organizations. Scholastically, Betty Anderson and Gail Caesar were leading our class on the honor roll. Students who made the Crown and Scepter Club were: Wilbert Thompson, LaVerne Campbell, Lillie Brown, Gail Caesar, Betty Anderson, Royal Gwyn, Alberta Nelson, and Ann Speas. We spent a pleasant summer in our respective places and returned in September of ' 58 with that air of senior superiority bursting out all over. Betty Anderson was elected President of the class. John Shore was President of the Engineering Club for two consecutive years, and Gail Cae- sar was Vice-President of the Engineering Club for two consecutive years. Dianne Caldwell was elected Editor of Hi-Lite for ' 58 and ' 59. Wilbert Thompson was elected President of the Crown and Scepter Club. Cody Mitchell one of our classmates was Miss Carver High , and Ann Speas another of our classmates, was Miss Carver ' s Attendant . At the Blue and Gold Banquet, two of our boys received the unsung heroes award. They were Franklin Holman and Wilbert Thompson. Gloria Cloud, Norman Clement, Nathaniel Wright, Margaret Gwyn, Dianne Caldwell, Henry Hardin, Gail Caesar and James Joyce took a big interest in the Glee Club. James Rice was elected President of the Veteran ' s Club. Let us not forget our great athletes, yes, the ones that brought to Carver the Western District Championship in 58. Do you remember Franklin Holman, Carver ' s star guard, Alfred Leak, a star halfback George Smith, Carver ' s star end, Carl Moore, defensive tackle, and Wilbert Thompson, a star line backer. We dreaded the loss of so many students of our class during 1956 and ' 59. The ratio of the class decreased tremendously, but they were our classmates from the beginning and quite often they are mentioned by us. To our principal, Mr. Martin, and instructors who took so much patience with us, we would like to say thanks. We have enjoyed every hour that we spent here at Carver with you, and we thank you for giving us your aid. Wilbert Thompson Class Historian 32 CLASS PROPHECY Let us look through the arch and see those of 1969 that we knew in 1959. Some of them per- haps thought they would never see a triumphant and prosperous future. It ' s now June 15, 1969, and I ' ve decided I would like to take a vacation. My first stop is to be at Kusler Air Force Base where Nok omis Keaton has just become a military officer, and Carl Moor e an Air Force Pilot. Later I plan to visit the hospital and see some of my old cl ass mates v Arriving at the hospital, I am greeted by Norma Clement and Margaret Gwyn , who are head nurses; Assisting them are Anthonette Douglas and Gloria Cloud . Maver Golden is matron of student nurses. With such a competent and efficient staff, being sick could be a pleasure. On the following day I went to Philadelphia. Here I was invited to attend a banquet in honor of Larry Porter , David Gregg , Alfre d Leak , and Robert Leak , for outstanding achievements in the field of Engineering. Mary Patterson was among the guests and she is employed as Physi- cal Education instructor, at P.B. 14 in Philadelphia. She informed me that LaVerne Campbell , Jo - Ann Glenn , Gail Caesar . Louise Orr, Alberta Nelson , Erma Mille r, Euphrates Perry , Lillie Brown , Julia Byers , Nancy Lynch , and Nathanie l Wright are also on the faculty there. The next day, I decided to buy myself a new outfit. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Philistine Nesmith was the owner of the dress shop where this purchase was made. While having my dress fitted we chatted about our high school days and planned a date for the following evening to go sight-seeing. While we were just looking around we saw Alvin Little who said his first book was being published the following week. Would you believe that Alvin would have become such an outstand- ing author? The next day, I traveled to New York where I was invited to lunch with Royal Gwyn , Private Investigator. He told me that Aldine Woodard and James Rice were Postal Clerks, and that the New Western Electric Company had given Ann Speas , Levonia Russel , Eva Brown , Cody Mitchel l Margie Fulp and Betty Anderso n jobs as stenographers. Money running short, I had to replenish my finances. It was a relief to discover Willi e Lash and Henry Hardin g as bank clerk and teller, who were able to identify me. My next stop was Detroit, Michigan. Here I looked up Fre d Hyma n who was a diesel mecha- nic and Nathaniel Jones who was in the recapping business. Later on during the evening they invited me to attend a special dinner with them which was to be held in the new trade building. There I saw Sterling Braddy , Maco n K nox , and John Lash who were employed as instructors in brick laying and Oscar Thoma s, in carpentry. On the following day I went to get a new hair style. I was told that the best beauty salon in town was where Agnes Webster , and Blondell Porte r were beauticians and Dixi e Smith , cosmo- tologist. Across the street from their beauty salon, I saw a barber shop. I then went in to find that the shop belonged to Corbitt Mitchell and Wilbur Sally. Later during the day I went to take some clothes to the cleaners, and after arriving there I saw that Charles Roan was the manager of the New Unique Cleaners. My vacation was coming to a close, so my last stop was in Paris, Kentucky. On Saturday afternoon I went to the football game being played between Kentucky State and Clark College, of Atlanta. Franklin Holman really played his part well as tackle. Also, while attending this game I saw Robert Crutchefield who said he was playing with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The next day was Sunday, and it was time for my vacation to end. Now I must get back and be fresh and ready for my job as stenographer at the D and O Manufacture, for John Shore is always there at 8:00 sharp.
