We were represented by Barbara Eaton as President, Junita Millner, Secretary, and Gloria Dark, Treasurer. Although we were excited and confused about our High School future, this did not hinder us in our athletic or social activities. Athletically, Leroy Little, Vance, Little, Clarence Chambers, and Genell Brooks proved their amazing abilities in football and basketball. Blondie Jones was the only representative from the Freshman class initiated into the Thespian Society. As each new year came in, new ideas were forming in our young minds. As Sophomores, Barbara Eaton, Deanna Hunter, Forestine Miller, John Damon, Rainey Chandler, Juanita Carter, Barbara Welch and William Phillips became interested in Dra- matics, so much, that they soon became Thespians. They presented a magnificent play entitled, Seventeenth Summer , a light hearted comedy definitely enjoyed by all. Vera Joyce proved her talent by excelling in music which helped her in winning the Omega Talent Huntin Reidsville, North Carolina . Among the sports activities in our Sophomore year, Genell Brooks and Clarence Chambers were members of our football ,team which won the District Championship Title. Upon entering our Junior year, little thought was given to anything but the Junior-Senior Prom. It was a big success, thanks to our advisors, Mrs. A. M. Smith, Mr. E. E. Balsley, Miss E. A. Lloyd and Mr. D. L. Lash. Scholastically, Barbara Eaton was often Champ on the honor roll. Deanna Hunter was elected Pres i den t of the Student Council and Gloria Dark, Editor of the Carver Hi-Lite. Eight members of our class were initiated into the Crown and Scepter Club, they were: Vera Joyce, Rose Preston, Carolyn Haith, Blondie Jones, Deanna Hunter, Barbara Eaton, James Hart and Charlie Oliver. Musically, Delarion Carr, James Bowman, Webster Connorand other able members proved their love for music by participating daily in the band. Barbara West, Vance Little, Jo Ann Brown, Arnella Byrd, and Ira Mackey joined the Glee Club. Vera Joyce also in the Glee Club, again won the Omega Talent Hunt. Annette Hairston and Wanda Shore were majorettes for Carver. Donna Miller was crowned Miss Carver High and Carolyn Haith was an attendant. Having seen how successful and exciting our Junior year had been, we were extremely anxious to return as Seniors the fol- lowing year. As Seniors, Graduation, Scholarships, College and the like seemed the main topic for discussion among us. Many of us were honored to be able to take standardized tests in preparation for college. Among the social and athletic highlights ofthe school year, the Senior Class won the Miss Carver of 1957 contest. Phyllis Warren was crowned Miss Carver of 1957 and Gwendolyn Jones and Dorthy King both seniors, were her attendants. The fes- tivity was held during the half-time ceremony of the Homecoming Football Game. Due to a dispuantity of words, we cannot tell of the many happy and memorable experiences we have enjoyed here. As a Graduating Class, we are deeply indebted to our principal Mr. Martin, Instructors, and friends for their loyal efforts to help us reach and maintain this point in life. We now realize that ac cepting responsibilities, possessing perserverance to continue in life and the grasp for knowledge of the highest things known to man are qualities that must be used to theirfullest extend to have a life of happiness and success. To those responsible, who shared our tears and joys, we the Senior Class of 1958, wish to thank you for everything. To Our School we say Thanks , we shall never forget you. CARO LYN HAITH BETTY MILLER Historians CLASS PROPHECY Time: T968 Place: Around the World The Senior Class of I958 has proved to be one of the most successful to be graduated from Carver, and you will soon know what I mean. As I boarded a Pan-Arnerican Cruiser, on my way to fill another position as Elementary Supervisor of well known school in Washington, D.C., I decided to stop along the way to see and meet again some of my old classmates. My first stop was in New York, where ImetCLARENCE CHAMBERS, FLETCHER HARRIS and GARLAND WALLACE, now well known scientists working on the U.S. Sputnik . They told me that VERA JOYCE is now a therapist at a well known hospital and one of her co-workers is RAINEY CHANDLER, and X-Ray Technician. When I returned to the Airport, Ilearned that we were to change planes. As I boarded the plane, I s u rp rised to meet F RA NC I 5 DUNN standing at the door, acting her part as Airline hostess. She told me that the plane was piloted by JAMES HART and CHARLIE DOUGLAS. Our next stop was in Chicago. I had wired one of my best friends, BARBARA EATON, who is a Chemical Engineer at the Westerr Electric Company, that I was coming and she met me at the Airport. Barbara informed that JUANITA CARTER, CAROLYN HAITH, ROSE PRESTON and JACQUELINE McCOY are her new associates at the plant. While in Chicago, I attended a baseball game between Washington and Chicago. I was very pleased to see GENE SPRINKLE anc NATHANIEL NORWOOD as members of the Chicago Cubs. During this time I noticed the name on one of the ambulances on hanc at the game. It read Jarrett and Carter Funeral Services . I soon learned that this business belonged to CARL JARRETT and DONALE CARTER, who have a great business as morticians. The a tte n da n ts were Carl and DonaId's old friends in high school, GEORGI ROBINSON, JAMES WHISONANT and WILLIAM VALENTINE . After leaving the game, Barbara persuaded me to visit the hospital. I didn't know why, but I soon found out. When we arrived was greeted by none other than FELICIA WYNECOFF, now head nurse at the hospital. I also saw PHYLLIS WARREN, ANNIE CARTER ARNELISA BYRD, IRA MACKEY, BARBARA WEST, ODESTA HAUSER, LOUISE SPEAS, HELEN HAIRSTON and REBECCA McCULLOUGl whoare nurses there. we met the head doctors. I was surprised to learn that they were SHIRLEY WARREN, EUGENE WEEKS, THEODOR TYNER and FLOYD GREENE. Bidding Barbara goodbye, I set forth on my iourney. I was met on the plane by GLORIA DARK, a Home Economist at Yale Uni versity. Gloria told me that BARBARA WELCH, DELARION CARR, JEAN LATTEN, VERDELL REID, GAIL JONES, BARBARA CONRAI and ANNA REID are all instructors at the leading high school there. She also informed us that GWENDOLY JONES is now solois with the Metropo I i ta n Opera, and WANDA SHORE is an advisor with Cortez Peters Business School. With Wanda and DONNI MILLER, MAXINE BRAME, BETTY MASSEY, LORETTA GLENN and JOANNE BROWN . HOWARD ALEXANDER, CHARLIE OLIVER PHILLIP MITCHELL and HUBERT LASH are important Engineers in Washington also. Conversing further with Gloria, I IearnedthatWILLIAM PHILLIPSis now an Electrician at Duke Power Company in Winston-Salem Also in the Twin City are EDWIN LASH, ROGER BAILEYand MATTHEW LATTEN, who are profitable Electrical Engineers. JUANITA MILLNER is an advisor at Russell 's Commercial School, and working with her are: RUBE NA BRABHAM, CAROLYN LASH, DOROT HN KING, MARLENE MILLER, HELEN HAIRSTON, MATTIE GOODE, FORESTINE MILLER and BETTY MILLER. GENELL BROOKS is coaching the N .C. Blue Devils, assisted by LEROY LITTLE. JAMES BOWMAN is now an important figure i the Real Estate Business. His associates are some of our own classmates. They are: BERNARD PORTER, JOHN BLACKBURN, ROBER THOMAS and OTHELLO MATTHEWS. Arriving in Washington, D.C. I was met by DEANNA HUNTER, a very famous Electrical Engineer, and my roommate for the nex few years. HENRY WATSON, WEBSTER CONNOR, THOMAS SMITH and naturally VANCE LITTLE are members of the Washington Redskins football team. Oh, yes, I almost forgot to tell you, but do you know that back at Carver, TREVA PHILLIPS, JAC Q UE LIN E PATTON, MAR' CORRELL, BARBARA WELCH, NATHANIEL MITCHELL, and JOHNNY GARLINGTON are head of the D.O. Department. Also th new instructors there are BETTY GARDNER, CAROLYN JONES and MARY LEDBETTER. Now that you've read our prophecy, can't you see why our class is the most successful ever to graduate from Carver? That's US: The Class of '58 BLONDIE JONES LAST WILL cmd TESTAMENT We, the Graduating Class of l958, realizing that the close of our school days is near at hand, think it wise to leave something to those who in the future will undertake to fill our places. In the course of our high school days, naturally, we have acquired various and valuable possessions, among them bring a vast store of knowledge that will help us through our lives.
