Foreword As the rising sun is but a promise of a glorious day ahead, so our school days, rich in experience and attain ment, are the assurance of the golden future to come. In organizing and printing this Yellow JACKET, it has been difficult to bring under one cover all of the expe- riences and interests of a full school year. If, for the present and impending years, this book can set forth, in spirit at least, the achievements of school life and happiness found in achieving, our efforts will have been justified. C. R. MARTIN Principal 2 R F. X ' . We were the first freshmen to enter the new school. We were somewhat confused, excited, and, of course, worrying about the future. At this time, we are very proud to look back over our successful high school years and sigh, Better ' n I thought it would be. Our freshman year began with Barbara Anderson as our President; Shirley Hairston, Secretary; Willie Mae Brown, Treasurer. Naturally, being in the of the finest schools in the South, we were a little excited, but this did not hinder our social and athletic abilities. We have been well represented in Athletics from the eighth grade until the publishing of this Yearbook. Albert Caesar Eldridge, Garland Wallace, and Harry Lee Smith have been our aces” in football and basketball throughout this time. In our Sophomore year, however, we found a few more able athletes, namely Charles Baron, Baxter Holman, Linville Hairston, and Ray Little. In our Sophomore year Joanne Byrd, Clara Hairston, Barbara Harris, Barbara Anderson, and Bobby Woods decided to find out what dramatics were like; likewise they joined the Dramatics Club. In their Junior year they starred in the play Stranger in the Night.” Lizzie Knox was presi- dent of the Y-Teens. Lucy White topped the honor roll often. Mary Wharton, Doris Hairston were majorettes for Carver. Samuel NeSmith and William Nelson were able members of the band. Luvenia Davis was an attendant to Miss Carver High.” Entering our Junior year, we had nothing on our minds except the Junior-Senior Prom. Exciting things were happening. Four members of our class won sterling miniature basketballs for obtaining the title of Runners-up in the State Class AAA Basketball Championship Tourna- ment. The prom was a success; it was talked that it was the best prom held in the new school, thanks to our Junior advisers, Mrs. O. H. Bynum, Mrs. M. T. Earl, and Mr. C. S. Greene, who worked so hard to make it such. With our Junior year being the most successful yet, we were anxious to return as Seniors the following year. Due to a disquantity of words we cannot express our thanks to those who were responsible for our success thus far. Our hats are off to our former principals, Mr. Hill, Dr. Watson and to our present principal, Mr. Martin, and especially to our senior advisors, Mrs. Bynum and Mrs. Earl, and to our guidance counselor, Mrs. Hedgley. We can now appreciate your strictness and the interest you seem to have taken in us. We are now beginning to realize that you are not really inconsiderate and nosy. It now seems nice to know that there is someone who really cares about your welfare. You have shared our sorrows and joys, our social and religious ideas. 1 am sure I have the consent of the class when I say thanks a million, it was really worth the bother. Again I say thank you. Well, many things have happened since that winter day in ' 51, and here’s hoping that you have enjoyed it just as much as we have. I am sure that there is not a member of this class who can or will try to forget our most exciting and elating high school career. We shall never forget Dear Ole Carver.” BARBARA ANDERSON, Historian 32 CLASS PROPHECY It can ' t be 1964! And yet my paper is dated for 1964. It is impossible for me to mistake the date. Listen for just a few minutes while I relate a few incidents which occurred while 1 was visiting in a dream. In New York I had the opportunity to visit a friend in one of the very best hospitals of that city. In the office I discovered three young ladies; they were Mary Wharton, head nurse; Annette Keaton, assistant head nurse, and Fannie Phillips, matron for the young nurses in training. Then while in Chicago I was invited to attend a banquet in honor of the graduates from the great engineering school. Weldon Reece had been elected president of the organization for young engineers. After leaving the banquet I met Willie Brown, who said she was leaving imme- diately to direct the Tuskegee Institute Choral Club. I had the privilege of visiting my cousin’s home in Philadelphia. 1 received a phone call; it was Ray Little, who had just become a military officer. We had an interesting conversation. During my visit to one of the high schools in Philadelphia I found Richard Wilkins employed as the Physical Education instructor; Baxter Holman, Football Coach; Clarence Moore, Baseball Coach, and A. C. Eldridge, Basketball Coach. Our 1954 class was well represented there. As I con- tinued to tour the building I discovered that Nathaniel Galloway, Mary Pinkney, James Evans, Joanne Byrd, Barbara Harris, and Marie Hart had been added to the faculty. John Knox was principal there also. Afterwards, I went to the auditorium where I heard Dr. Marcus Laughlin speak about health. I had lunch in the school cafeteria where Lizzie Knox was dietitian. After lunch I decided to tour the trade building, where Claudius Eller and Joseph Kimbrough were teaching brick-masonry. I had the pleasure of visiting the zoo while in Philadelphia, too. There I saw Will McCaniel who said he had just left North Carolina where he was a lawyer and Rachel Sprinkle was his secretary. He told me that the Reynolds Tobacco Company had given Powell Welch, Luvenia Davis, Ellen Waddell, Geraldine Valentine, and Dorothy Gould jobs as stenographers. I also had the privilege of visiting a friend in Washington. It was Dr. Paul Lash, who has an office there. He took me to visit another friend, Dr. Robert Woods. Johnnie Hauser was his secretary. Later we attended a baseball game. There I met Ruth Brown. She told me that she and Ruby Greene were laboratory technicians there in the city. After I had returned to Dr. Lash’s home I received another phone call. It was James Johnson. He invited me over to the funeral home which he and William Nelson were operating. Afterwards I had dinner with their secretary, Bertha Anthony. After dinner we talked over old times. She told me that she had been in the hospital and that Vera Gambill, Mable Crowell, Rhudine Single- ton, Clara Hairston, and Barbara Anderson were capable nurses there. The following day I visited a high school. There I found Harry Smith coaching and Shirley Hairston teaching. Shirley told me that Irene Hauser and Geneva Raysor had a large beauty shop in that city; and that Ruth Payne was also doing fine work as a dress designer. On my way back to North Carolina I bought a copy of the New York Times. On the sports page I saw a picture of a football player. It was Aldean Moore! He is playing professional football with the New York Giants. After reaching home I found my brother in the hospital. He told me of three young nurses who said they knew me. I had no idea who they were. Later, they entered. They were Doris Feaster, Maranda Kendrix, and Anne Glenn. Now that my vacation has ended and school has started, I must prepare a test in Agriculture for the Freshman Class at Carver School. CHARLES MILLER LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Graduating Class of 1954, realizing that the close of our school days is near at hand, think it wise to leave something to those who in the future will undertake to fill our places. In the course of our high school days, naturally, we have accu- mulated various and valuable possessions; our years have been fruitful. We have acquired a vast store of knowledge along with other things that will help us through our lives. Since we are burdened with some superfluous possessions, we think it wise to dispose of them; too, we realize that the school would have a great loss without us or our valuable possessions. The underclassmen, especially the Juniors, would be handicapped if we took all our valuable assets. To our faithful and long-suffering principals, Mr. Hill, Dr. Wat- son, and Mr. Martin, we leave our heartfelt gratitude for their help and co-operation in leading us to our goal. To our senior sponsors, Mrs. Bynum and Mrs. Earl, to whom we are very much indebted for their leadership and guidance, we leave our wishes that they may have class just as they want it to be. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1954. 34 CLASS SONG Tune: In the Mission of St. Augustine” In the Mission of Dear Carver High, We say farewell. Yet our memories here will linger still Our love to dwell. As down life ' s road we trod, We’ll think of you. And hold your name so true As you would hav us to. In the Mission of Dear Carver High The parting time is here; And we hope to again Even though we are parting now. For each sweet joy that we have known; ' Tis sad to part. You’re the school we will always adore Oh, if all of our dreams would but come true. Carver School, we would never leave you. Here we met and were joined as one, With you our mother and we your loyal daughters and sons. Your ways we ' ve known and trusted so well. There are many secrets you hold and may never tell. We ' ve often wondered if these things were true, What others were saying when they departed from you. Had you served well? Had you been true? Had you shown the love of a father, too? There are many things that we feel within, In losing you we ' ve lost our friends. Oh, if all of our dreams would but come true. You would be our High School, and College, too. The Class of ' 54.
