Basketball After gettxng to a late start the Carver llrgh School Dragons made a commend able showrng on the court Coach lohnny X Allen s team was able to take ad vantage of every opportumty that presented ltself because of superb and excell ent teamwork by the squad N W Nrchols showed hrmself upon numerous OCCHSIOHS as possessrng great qualrtres as becommg a great athlete He rs a very versatrle player and a con screntrous worker H1s posrtron was forward He was ably assrsted by Roger 'Scott and lohn Vlrrght two of the best guards rn any mstances when the gomg got tough The forward POSIIIOH was held down by IN ll N1Cl lOlS and Hardy Thrower Hardy Thrower s srze enabled hxm to run wrld on many occasrons esse B urnton can out lump any man hrs srze that rs up to 6 3 A team rsn t any better than the men that srt on the bench, who are known as substrtutes, and we were proud that we possessed such good play ers as Xlonroe Rayford Hollerman Frank Anderson Albert Anderson Raymond Smrth and Adol phus Eddrngton Our team had rts f1rst chance to play rn a tournament when we were host to the Sprmg Tournament that met wrth us rn our new gymnasrum Although we drd not wm the trophy we were glad of the opportunlty also for the other teams to see our gymnasrum Glrls Basketball The Carver Hrgh Dragonett were able to drsplay IES abrlrty rn a great way V.e were able to see that Capt Dorrs G Vrllrams B1ll1e jo ohnson Nlarlene Carn1sh Dolrrs Sn 1th Dorothy Reese and Nlae Etta Vlrrght possessed good ath letrc qualrtres for the forward posrtron They played a good clean sportsmanshrp game of basketball and were always fxghtrng to put the Dragonetts out 1n front Our forwards were exceptronally fast and had accurate eyes for shoot1ng baskets Sherlme Nrchols jearlrne Nxchols -luamta H oung, Mary jo Merchant, Lanora L Wxllrams Mary Bynum and Glynna Henry kept our team from bemg scored upon on numerous occas1ons by mampulatmg themselves rn such a manner that the opposmg teams found rt d1ff1cult to score very easrly We shall be lookmg forward to a much better season of basketball next year By Gordon W hrte an james L Turner O ' 0 K v , . , V .
