On Memoriam HUGH YOUNG BARRINGER A Member of the 1958-59 Freshman Class 1929-1958 Strong son of God, immortal Love, Whom we, that have not seen thy face, By faith alone, embrace, Believing where we cannot prove; Thine are these orbs of light and shade; Thou madest Life in man and brute; Thou madest Death; and lo, thy foot Is on the skull which thou hast made. Thou wilt not leave us in the dust; Thou madest man, he knows not why, He thinks he was not made to die; And thou has made him: thou art just.” FROM IN ME MORIAM ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON

Dedication With deep humility and sincere appreciation we dedicate this 1958-1959 edition of the Carveran to Mr. Joseph F. Towns, a pleasant, affable individual who has been a part of Carver College faculty for five years. As an instructor in the social science department and as the school photographer, he has demonstrated his ability to make us aware of our surroundings and of the need to know and understand human values. For years he worked almost single-handedly to produce our annual, the Carveran. Mr. Towns has a smile that is contagious and a disposition which is comparable to Job ' s. Mr. Towns isagraduate of Johnson C. Smith Uni¬ versity and holds the Master of Arts degree in econo¬ mics from the University of Michigan. He has done further graduate work at New York University. When West Charlotte High School was organized, Mr. Towns became one of the first teachers and has served ' in the social studies department there ever since. Mr. Towns is a great worker in and supporter of many promotional organizations in this community, and is counted as one of our most effective citizens. His service to religious and civic groups is unexcelled. It is fitting, therefore, that we, the Carveran staff, dedicate this record of our activities and progress to Mr. Towns with the best wishes of the administrative staff, faculty and student body.
