P S uA -, J PRESENTING CARVER COLLEGE A PANORAMA OF THE ACTIVITIES OF CARVER COLLEGE Published by- Carver College 501 South Alexander Street Charlotte 6, North Carolina Vessie M. Worthy, editor of the Carveran Margaret R. Berry, associate editor. Dr. E. H. Brown, Director of the College FOREWORD Wi .. 1 J. ' V i?-.;. - |f ' ■■ ' ;. ■ —-A ' ■ ' ■ ■ ' ::V! ONE PICTURE IS WORTH TEN THOUSAND WORDS --In this 1958 edition of the Carveran , we have endeavored to bring you a pictorial review of life at Carver College during the year 1957-58. On September 1 9 1 957, approximately 500 students came together and learned to know and love each other. There were tears, but no one cried alone; there was laughter, which was shared by all. Publishing a memory book, as any school annual is, would be impossible without the help of many. A IW great amount of credit must go to our Director, Dr. •A. Edward H. Brown, who led us through this year; the ' •J: teache rs who helped in identifying pictures, and the students who contributed toward the editing of our 1958 Carveran. So we present this annual to you, to keep always in your storehouse of memories. k ' ' • ' ' 1 t ■ • - 2 GENERAL OBJECTIVES Carver College ' s primary objective is to serve the individual and the community by provid¬ ing for young people and adults, an education for enriched personal living, for cultural devel¬ opment and for responsible citizenship. More specifically, the college aims to prepare the individual for admission to a senior college or a university. Additional objectives are to pre¬ pare for occupational competency and to offer students and adults continued opportunities in vocational, cultural and general education. 3 DEDICATION of hope and courage to all of us We dedicate with a deep sense of gratitude, I- the 1957-1958 Carveran to the members of the ’ ' : I vvo ' ■ ' ' .7 Carver College Scholarship Campaign Committee ■y i for services rendered to our college. The group includes Mrs. Edmonia S. Peterson, Chairman, Mrs. Delcenia Murray, Vice-chairman, Mrs. Irene H. Jones, Secretary, Mr. William Cathey, Treasurer, Mrs. Annie Boulware, Mrs. William Cathey, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Drye, Mrs. Mamie Dunn, Miss Corine Grier, Mrs. Ada Gunn, Mr. and Mrs. William Mitchell andMrs. Cleo Yongue. Because of their interest approximately $2000,00 was raised to provide scholarships fo_ worthy students and through the efforts ofthis committee, many students were able to remain ,i ' V ' -.V ; in school and do a high quality of work. ' ■ ' v The Carver College family will always re- ' member the Scholarship Committee as a symbol A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR The five hundred or more young people and adults from our city and neighboring communities studying at Carver College this year re¬ present real and potential leadership and citizenship. It is the purpose of Carver College to provide the best conditions possible for the all¬ round development of worthy students. The administration realizes that it must acquire a keen sense of duty and responsibility to each student in his quest for knowledge and opportunity to work in the local community. Carver College today is a relatively small school--many times larger than in 1949 when founded--yet small enough that every stu¬ dent is known individually; consequently, we know your aspirations. By working with leaders in our community, we are able to create an aware¬ ness of the needs of all you among the total citizenry and will work for the type and quality of education necessary for profitable employment and wholesome living. The future of o u r college is bright. We will grow, for there are many needs that can be resolved by our college. Doing a job well has always been a strong desire of our staff and students. In recognition of superior work done , high standards will be set and our students should become more efficient and helpful. Always remember that, through a formal program of discipline and training, our educational institutions are designed to develop you and other persons who wish to equip themselves with information, techniques, and strong character, all of which are necessary for service.
