With simple warmth of friendship we dedicate this 1957 Carveran to Mr. James L. Winningham, a native of North Carolina. [5 He attended Guilford College, Denver University and Akron University and served in the Tank Corps $ during World War I. He lived for a number of years in Colorado and Ohio, returning to North Carolina in 1935. For several years Mr. Winningham has been en- • gaged in industrial engineering and education. Since 1947, he has been supervisor of Veterans ' Education [i for North Carolina Department of Public Instruction { in this area. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Ame¬ rican Legion, and serves on the Committee for the Rehabilitation and Employment of the Physically Handicapped in Mecklenburg County. Mr. Winningham is the husband of Mrs. Edyth Winningham, instructor of political and social science at Charlotte College. Their family circle includes one daughter. Mr. Winningham supported the initial idea for our Accelerated High School, and worked out plans to meet the approval of the Veterans Education Committee and the Veterans Administration. His frequent visits to the institution serve as a safeguard and stimulant for good attendance and scholarship, high character and leadership, and wo rthy use of federal funds for the training of veterans. His personal interest in each veteran reveals understanding, patience, and good will. Both the faculty and students anticipate his visits with enthusiasm. Because of his contributions to adult education and the progress of Carver College, with pride and grati¬ tude we dedicate the 1957 Carveran to Mr. James L. W inningham. SSMi
