PRESENTING CARVER COLLEGE A PANORAMA OF THE ACTIVITIES OF CARVER COLLEGE Published by Carver College 501 South Alexander Street Charlotte 6, North Carolina Doris Byars, editor of the Carveran Dr. E. H. Brown, Director of the College ' ' .A ' 1 -r JSV : ■ vV: • ; ■• - ' • fiy.y ■ ■ ' •VV ] vi A v | FOREWORD The Annual Staff has endeavored to present to you the activities of our school in all departments. It is our sincere desire that in the future, this book will b r i n g many added hours of enjoyment and pleasant memories of the days spent within the halls of Carver College during the 1957 school year. X- Wewish to extend our appreciation to the mer¬ chants who have helped to make this publication possible. Ilk We will forever cherish our participation in the many enjoyable experiences and activities here at Carver College. Moreover it is a great pleasure for us to acknowledge an inde btedness, first to our Director, Dr. Edward H. Brown, to our most com¬ petent and efficient faculty, to the student body, and finally to all who contributed to the success of our publication. r Z a rer GENERAL OBJECTIVES Carver College ' s primary objective is to serve the individual and the community by pro¬ viding for young people and adults, an education for enriched personal living, for cultural de¬ velopment and for responsible citizenship. More specifically, the college aims to prepare the individual for admission to a senior college or a university. Additional objectives are to pre¬ pare for occupational competency and to offer students and adults continued opportunities in vocational, cultural and general education. 3 DEDICATION MR. JAMES L. WINNINGHAM 4 With simple warmth of friendship we dedicate this 1957 Carveran to Mr. James L. Winningham, a native of North Carolina. [5 He attended Guilford College, Denver University and Akron University and served in the Tank Corps $ during World War I. He lived for a number of years in Colorado and Ohio, returning to North Carolina in 1935. For several years Mr. Winningham has been en- • gaged in industrial engineering and education. Since 1947, he has been supervisor of Veterans ' Education [i for North Carolina Department of Public Instruction { in this area. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Ame¬ rican Legion, and serves on the Committee for the Rehabilitation and Employment of the Physically Handicapped in Mecklenburg County. Mr. Winningham is the husband of Mrs. Edyth Winningham, instructor of political and social science at Charlotte College. Their family circle includes one daughter. Mr. Winningham supported the initial idea for our Accelerated High School, and worked out plans to meet the approval of the Veterans Education Committee and the Veterans Administration. His frequent visits to the institution serve as a safeguard and stimulant for good attendance and scholarship, high character and leadership, and wo rthy use of federal funds for the training of veterans. His personal interest in each veteran reveals understanding, patience, and good will. Both the faculty and students anticipate his visits with enthusiasm. Because of his contributions to adult education and the progress of Carver College, with pride and grati¬ tude we dedicate the 1957 Carveran to Mr. James L. W inningham. SSMi A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR I would like very much to convey to the students of Carver College exactly how I feel about our school and our hopes for the future. I doubt whether anyone can seriously question this one basic fact that education, now, as it has been for all the centuries of man, remains the key to a better life, both economically and spiritually. What we are trying so hard to do here at Carver, with the help and co-operation of the educational authorities of this community and state, is to create for our students the atmosphere and the facilities which a previous generation did not have, and which are so necessary to bring to us a higher standard of living. We desire to provide for our students challenges which will create initiative, and or arouse latent abilities so as to be assured of the full development of every student ' s potentialities. It is not an easy road, I know, but it is the only safe road, if we are to look forward to a better life for ourselves and for our children to come. This yearbook, which is a record of your years at Carver should be more than a memento. It should serve as a stimulus for the achievement of whatever goals you have set for your selves. We, at Carver, are your friends and are anxious to be of service to you in anyway possible after you leave us. Good luck and God bless you! Edward H. Brown 6 MR.
