■i The staff and student body dedicate with pride the 1955-1956 Carveranto one of Charlotte ' s own, Mr. Eugene S. Potts. Popular, progressive and dynamic, Mr. Potts is well characterized by a leading radio and television publication as one who has never learned to say ' no ' in situations where he can be of help to others. Genial Gene, as h e is affectionately known by his thousands of devoted fans, became Charlotte ' s first Negro disc jockey in 1948. He is the only Negro on the board of directors of Radio Station W.G.I.V., of which he is also a stockholder. Mr. Potts is one of the nation ' s fifteen leading disc jockeys. Tests of strength among the disc jockeys of the local stations saw him as the winner by a wide margin. He has been cited in nat i o na 1 magazines, including Harpers and Radio and Television Mirror. Genial Gene is a c t iv e in the religious, social and civic life of the community. He has worked closely with the March of Dimes, the Y.M.C.A., the United Negro College Fund, the United Appeal, the Police Department and the public schools. He is an alumnus of Second Ward High School and Johnson C. Smith University. He is a member of the Clement Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity ' and a number of other social and civic organizations. ■• i j: i V. i 55i;
