mm PRESEN TING .. me of CARVER COLLEGE 1955 A RECORD OF THE ACTIVITIES OF CARVER COLLEGE PUBLISHED BY CARVER COLLEGE 501 SOUTH ALEXANDER STREET CHARLOTTE 6, NORTH CAROLINA EDITED BY THE ECHO STAFF DAVID IRBY, EDITOR WILLIE CHAPPELL, ASSOCIATE EDITOR ' ° fVat as Y - come, i - ' ber i- - ' ° __ . iS. U- DEDICATION The 1955 Echo is respectfully dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Grier, out- standing citizens of Charlotte. Mr. Grier is a native of Mecklenburg County where his influence has been powerfully exerted in many directions. Mr. and Mrs. Grier are known to many of us as great community organizers and devout christians. Mr. Grier is an enduring pioneer, a sincere philanthropist, a de- voted husband andfather, a loyal and cooperative home maker and above all he is one of the most prominent business men in the city of Charlotte. For a number of years he very successfully operated a retail grocery store on the Monroe road. In 193 1 he organized the Grier i Thompson Funeral Home. At present he is rendering a service to his people as Funeral Director. His wife Mrs. Irma White Grier, the daughter of the late Mr. Green and Rhodie White is greatly responsible for much of her husband ' s success. She is a loyal and devoted wife. She is at present busy aiding Mr. Grier in the development of Grier Heights just off of Monroe road. Brown Director Since Carver College is a community junior college, it is free to explore and determine its own educational objectives. Because itis a work- ing part of the community where students live, it is in a favorable position to study the educational needs of the community. We look upon the whole community as our student body, and we are at- tempting to provide education at varying points of need in the life of each individual. It is a pleasure for us to bring to the attention oi our students the life of an individual like Mr. Arthur S.Grier who has worked, and is working, to make Charlotte a better place in which to live. His excellence and accomplishments, in all aspects of community growth and willingness to serve beyond the call of duty, should serve as an inspi- ration to those who plan to lead good and useful lives in this community. The time has come for many of you to leave Carver and build a new life elsewhere. For some of you this will meanmatriculation in some Senior College for professional training; for others, it will be an introduction to the world of work and responsibility. In either case, I hope that you will bring to your new life an understanding of the fact that your education is still unfinished and that you must go on studying and learning about problems, about people and about the Al- mighty God whose own work on earth is yet un- finished and will not be complete until we learn to live together in peace and brotherhood. You are the fruit of this particular tree on earth. By your deeds you will carve a fine favor in the eyes of future generations . Always remem- ber to come back often and let us know where you are and what you are doing. Best Wishes ! 2: THE FACULTY MRS. A. E. Our eyes are cast toward that glowing shore, As we embark, our course well set, We ve found our way which was dark before, And never can we forget. With a determined heart and an eager mind. Armed with a quest which moves us on. We must leave the darkness far behind. To approach a brighter, newer, dawn. Hopefully laboring! Gratefully learning! Never wavering! Hungrily yearning! Widening, gathering, seeking, lengthening, Together we sail toward that gem in the sun, Each purpose in mind assists in strenghtening. For the way lies ahead, and the prize is well won. Our thanks go out to the captains who brought us. Thus far in the journey of knowledge. With a pledge of respect to the teachers who taught us, And endeared us to Carver College. We are leaving the portals of this our dear school, But as we leave we must say, That to live true to ourselves. Our one perfect rule. Is to work and to learn each day.
