THE YEAR OF THE TIGER COTTON BLOSSOM 1986 Caruthersville High School 1708 Ward Avenue Caruthersville, MO 63830 Volume 37 1 C.H.S. PRIDE SHOWN IN 1986 was The Year of the Tiger. The year itself started out much like any other year. The Seniors were more than pleased to be the superiors, the Freshmen were trying to get used to the changes they were encountering and the Sophomores and Juniors were just glad to be here. A new club was formed called the Top Cats. Its intention was to boost student spirit. All in all, it seemed to go over quite well. The club took buses to football games and even helped the Cheerleaders. Many times their faces were decorated with red Tiger paws to support our team. Though we lost our Homecoming game against Kennett, the dance was a success. Maggie George was crowned queen. After Christmas break, the Tiger Basketball season began. Though they were seeded last, the Tigers came back and won their Conference Tournament. The Cotton Blossom Staff sponsored its annual dance on February 22. Five candidates were chosen and Ashlea Hardesty was crowned 2 k THE YEAR OF THE TIGER | queen. Spring finally made it and the Boys’ Tennis team finished second over all and achieved a season record of eleven wins and two losses. For the fourth year in a row, the Tiger Baseball team won at District. After a great Junior-Senior Prom, everyone anxiously awaited Graduation. The Commencement exercises were held on May 29 and the Seniors were finally free. All the good times and fun that we shared in ’86 truly made it The Year of the Tiger! 3 OF 77 £ 1986 TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY............... 5 ORGANIZATIONS........ 15 SPORTS............... 29 FEATURES............. 63 CLASSES............. 107 SENIORS............. 129 INDEX............... 169 ADMINISTRATION HOLDS School Board Members of the Caruther-sville School Board are (Seated, Left to Right) Mr. Jim Atchison, Dr. Clarence Wilson and Mrs. Ellen Tipton Madison. In the opening game the Tigers journeyed to Gosnell, Ark. capping their first win of the season. The next game was, as some of the players put it, “the most emotional game of the season. The opponents were none other than the arch-rivals, the Hayti Indians. The Tigers won with slight difficulty and were ready to face their conference rivals the Dexter Bearcats the following week. Although the support of the fans was behind them, the team ended with their first loss of the season. The Tigers then hosted Obion County the following week who left town leaving the Tigers yet another loss. With two losses tucked away and a week of strenuous workouts, the Cat Pack, travelled to Gibson County with a vision of winning in their eyes. In a long fought battle the Tigers pulled away victorious, the closest game of the season. The team’s next opponents were the Kennett Indians on Homecoming night. Injuries were plaguing the team and the Pack fell short and lost. The Charleston Bluejays hosted the Cats the following week. With chants of “Kill Green” the Bluejays did nothing of the sort. Tony Green (Junior) played one of his best rushing performances as the Tigers capped the Jays in a must win conference game. The Pack was on the road again the following week losing to the East Prairie Eagles in a game in which nothing seemed to have worked for the Tigers. The next game was probably the Pack’s greatest moment as they kept away the Malden Greenways capturing their first and only shut-out game of the year. In the last game of the season the Tigers were stopped by the Eagles of New Madrid thus ending the Pack’s season. Head Coach Lloyd Block plans his team's strategy while other Tigers look on. 32 Stan Whitencr (Senior) scrambles a defender in search of the end zone. Tony Green (Junior) escapes the grasp of a Hayti defender. The Tiger Defense stops a Ken nett rushing back from possible yardage. TIGERS SHOW PRIDE Throughout the season the team was in playoff contention but the key losses in conference games ruined their chance for post-season play. With all due respect, the Varsity Cats emerged from a suffering season the year before to an admirable season of 5-5. Algic Crenshaw (Junior) bursts through the Eagles' defense cn route to the endzone. (Seniors) Stan Whitener and Mark McClendon wonder if they Stan Whitcner (Senior) looks to the backHeld as the offense waits for the count, size up to the competition. IN 1985 VARSITY SEASON Tony Green (Junior) watches as an unknown lineman “plows” the way for him. Jay Grantham (Senior) challenges all opponents while Mike Lack (Junior) and Mark McClendon (Senior) look on. Stan Whitcncr (Senior) attempts to scramble to the first down marker. 3$ JV HAS EXTRA - ORDINARY SEASON Timmy Smith heads down field as Roland Noth kicks the ball. Brad Barnett attempts to catch the ball as a Trojan defender interferes. The 1985 JV Football season can be called many things, but extraordinary seems to fit best. The team, which consisted of many sophomores, proved that they had the ability to face their opponents and win. Several team players “blossomed” and should see varsity action next year. Team losses came against New Madrid County Central and the Dyersburg Trojans. These were hard-fought battles; however, unfortunately, on both occasions, the JV Cats fell short. A Trojan defender is in hot pursuit as Richard Lynn scrambles for yardage. FRESHMAN FOOTBALL TEAM SHOWS Front row (left to right): Everett Wilburn, Brad Horner, Danny Darnell, Brian Morris. Seniors Dee Anne Southern, Jane Anne Grantham, and Michelle Watkins finished their fourth year on the team. Senior Kathy Sellars ended her third year. Completing their second year were Grittiya Supattanasiri and Kristy Hamm. First-year players for the team were Melissa Varnadore, Tonya Lewis, and Shannon Guthrie. The seniors provided leadership and knowledge to the underclassmen players, who gained valuable experience. During the season, several junior varsity matches were played, giving those players who might not have been able to play in many of the varsity matches more opportunities to compete and to improve their skills. Southern was the number one singles player for the team all season. She had a good record with many of her losses coming from hard-fought, heartbreaking losses in tiebreakers. The Grantham Sel-lars doubles team, which placed fourth in Sophomore Tonya Lewis manages a smile as she prepares to receive a serve. IOLLEY AT DISTRICT doubles at District the previous year, held the number one position in doubles for the team. The team, which was the co-second place winner in the 1984 District team competition, was unable to repeat its winning w-ays at District in 1985. Bad breaks and tough competition allowed the team only little advancement in District play. Those attending District were Southern, who went in number one singles, Watkins, who went in number two singles, the Grantham Sellars team, who went as the number one doubles team, and the % Supattanasiri Hamm team who went as the number two doubles team. Although the loss of the four seniors will hurt the team, the returning girls have gained valuable experience and a greater understanding of the game, which will no Kristy Hamm (Sophomore) practices her doubt’ heIP make next year a finc and . • 1 • return. exciting season for the team. The Tiger season got off to another slow start this season. The Varsity Tigers won the Bootheel Conference Tournament, first by putting Senath-Hornersville away; then by advancing and playing South Pemiscot and winning by two points. SPIRIT TO C.H.S The beginning of a new school year means many different things to many different people. To a freshman, a new school year at C.H.S. may seem a little scary as he first experiences life as a high school student. Upon becoming familiar with his daily routine, a freshman can relax and enjoy making new friends, sharing with them the good times C.H.S. has to offer. The new school year finds the sophomores glad not to be underdogs any longer. They can take pride in the fact that they are on their way to becoming upper-class-men. Juniors enjoy being upper-classmen and look forward to ordering senior rings and making the Junior-Senior Prom a success. For the Seniors, the beginning of schoool is also the ending with graduation being the finale of a four year play. Seniors begin the year with the common interest of making memories that will last a lifetime. Dee Anne, Claire, Susan, Maggie, Michelle, and all of CHS as a whole, were aware of the fact that Homecoming had arrived. Each of the classes got into the act by participating in spirit week. Students worked diligently preparing decorations that were centered around a chosen theme. The class of 86 won the spirit week competition for their third consecutive year. All who took part helped make this year’s Homecoming unique. On the evening of Oct. 11, 1985 spirits remained high as fans made their way to Hopke Field to join in on the fun of Homecoming. The crowd looked on as Senior Tigers Bill Boyd and Stan Whitener and Senior Cheerleader Ashlea Hardesty prepared to reveal their secret. After a few moments of pacing in front of the five candidates the trio moved Queen - Miss Maggie George. After the announcement had been made, the Tigers roared on to the field but were defeated by the Kennett Indians with a score of 19-17. The loss of the game did not, however, result in the loss of high spirits by students at CHS. Enthusiasm continued to soar as CHS students and their dates jammed to music provided by the Manassa Sound System of Jackson, Mo. The lyrics of this song brought forth many opportunities for the Seniors to recall good times shared with friends and classmates. The seniors listened intently as Rev. Larry Griffin spoke of the importance of commitment in life, rather than just contribution. The graduates pondered this concept as they marched back down the aisle and out of the gym doors. 101 COMMENCEMENT - HERE Steven Faulkner and Roland Noth accomplish a major goal in their lives - graduation. Hopke Field was the scene of the 1986 Commencement Exercises on May 29. After the processional march, the invocation was presented by Father Ernie Marquart. Everyone in attendance was greeted by Dee Anne Southern, Senior class president. Tim Mags-by presented the speakers who were Bill Boyd and John Karnes. Bill entitled his speech “Not Knowing, but Believing”, and John spoke on “A New Horizon - A New Perspective”. Superintendent Carl Hutchison presented the honor graduates and graduating class. Diplomas were presented by Mr. James Atchison, president of the Board of Education. During the recessional, the graduates proudly left the field with feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment. It is not until graduation that seniors discover the reality of the situation at hand. Much preparation took place for the actual ceremony, but how does one prepare to leave friends and venture out on his own? Each senior faced graduation with the knowledge that soon friends and classmates would journey down different roads. Seniors knew that the class of ’86 might be separated emotionally. All seniors had memories that would live in their hearts and minds forever. These seniors excitedly await their diplomas (From left - Brenda Atkinson. Stephen Ayers. Jon Barnett, and Amanda Bell. 105 Students portray the Joe Cool” The arrival of spring brings warmer weather and fun times at CHS. Spring week '86 got off to a “cool” start with students wearing hats and shades on Monday. Tuesday, people dressed as their favorite star or TV personality. The 50’s scene was recreated on Wednesday with students wearing rolled-up jeans and loafers. Thursday, the last day before Spring Break, was Clash day. A spring dance was held for the first time with the girls saying to the guys “Let’s go Crazy”, which was the theme of the dance. Wade Mansfield (Junior) gives us his Miami Vice look. look. Being a freshman at any high school can be very scary and CHS is no different from any other high school in this aspect. Every year another class of frightened freshmen walks through the doors of CHS not knowing what to expect. Immediately they are overwhelmed by the size of the school and the masses of people buzzing around inside. Freshmen must soon adapt themselves to high school life. This involves becoming accustomed to their schedules, getting involved in numerous activities, and “burning the midnight oil” occasionally. Along with these tasks comes the knowledge that the freshman year will serve as a stepping stone toward graduation and for life beyond graduation. During their first year of high school, freshmen gain new knowledge, make new friends and experience a greater sense of responsibility and independence. Freshmen have three years remaining to enjoy what CHS has to offer. 108 Ayers. Chris Abbott. Talmadgc Anderson. Galvin Babcock. Richie Anderson. Gerald Anderson. Janice Anderson. Shirron Atchison. Sophomores have become more familiar with the routine of high school life and have also established many new friendships w ith both teachers and classmates. Sophomores have also become involved in extracurricular activities. Many tenth graders become members of various clubs and organizations, w hile others take an active part in the numerous sports programs that are available at CHS. With the sophomore year comes responsibility and independence. Sophomores accumulate know ledge as well as credits that w ill carry the student on a step closer to graduation. Independence becomes evident w hen sophomores receive their drivers licenses. This exhilarating experience brings feelings of freedom, independence, and responsiblity. Reporter James Mott and Student Council Representative-at-Large Bill Boyd. Seniors at CHS, like all seniors, look forward to graduation. At the beginning of the year. Seniors gather together and review the past summer’s events. At the same time they preview the coming activities and plan to make memories that will last a lifetime. These memories continue to be made throughout the entire school year. They are made at athletic events, assemblies. Homecoming, Cotton Blossom, Prom, the Senior Banquet, and finally, at Graduation. Graduation is the icing on a cake which is made up solely of memories. This “icing” is sometimes bittersweet to some seniors. The accomplishment of receiving the long-awaited diploma is sweet, but leaving behind special friends and teachers can bring about feelings of sadness and bitterness. Seniors leave CHS with memories, wisdom, knowledge, and experience. All of these are important, but without memories, high school would seem less enjoyable and significant. Memories and high school are synonymous in a senior’s vocabulary. Every senior has his own memories of high school to carry with him through the years. At certain points in his life he can reminisce about this time at CHS and smile. 130 THEIR GOALS Mai. Hon Soc.. Key Club. Sr. Class VP. Hr. Officer. Band All FCA. FBI A. Fr Club. Top Cals VP. Thanks also goes to Pemiscot Publishing Company, with whom we shared two staff members this year, for allowing us to share many pictures published in the newspaper. Appreciation is also expressed to Wade Tipton for his time and effort in covering many school events and supplying the staff with pictures of these events. Individual thanks will be given to the 1986 Cotton Blossom staff- one of the best I have been privileged to work with: Selina Pullam and Renee Hillhouse- the quiet members of the staff- accomplished much with very little fanfare. Assisting them was Ashlea Hardesty. Jo Walker and Daniel Figgins kept the staff supplied with copy and captions of various events. Richard Smith pitched in wherever needed, after his own section was finished. Tim Magsby, Keith Campbell and Larry Carnell worked hard on the sports section when the chips were down and the book needed to be finished. Rhonda Curtis and Sherry Flippo sometimes amazed us with their lack of frustration at having to type something over and over again (through no fault of their own). Dennis Smith, Cheryl Cagle and Faye Agnew lent a hand whenevr ,sary to help finish the yearbook or prepare for the dance. Kathy Sellars and Tracey Woods worked endlessly, indexing pages in r to be accurate. Dwayne Dale was never too busy to take pictures, or type, or write captions. Cindy Cummings (the only Junior on the staff) and Lisa Long were exceptional at their specialties- layout. John Karnes and Gary Figgins began their work by helping to finish the 1985 Cotton Blossom, and have now seen their own book to completion. Thanks everyone-ril miss you!
